You guys noticed that? Mainly the US version has the black hump while the other versions doesn't. Initially I thought it was due to the Tobii Eye-tracking but both versions has it. I kind of dig the the clean smooth look of the other version better which we can't get here in the US.

The one I saw at the store yesterday resembled the second image. I believe it depends on the specifications you order. Maybe the QHD models have that because of the display connector being different than that of the regular IPS displays (i.e. G-SYNC).

I believe the back hump is for tobii eye tracking.

i have a canadian 120hz gsync and it has the backhump. I was slightly bummed because when i saw early reviews, they showed the lid able to go back flat basically, and mine doesnt even come close, not a big deal it just is nice for not breaking your hinges accidentally.

My US purchased Best Buy model (6700HQ/1070) looks like the lower picture. I have never even seen the other one; if i had been shown it without context, i would think it was a pre-production model or something..
-
The one I saw in Best Buy had the 1070 and looked like the lower picture, too.
I'm fairly certain it's related to the GTX 1080, G-SYNC display, or both. Does anyone have the GTX 1080? It could be for additional cooling.
I know the Alienware 17 has an empty heat pipe slot if you don't order the GTX 1080. Perhaps there's more to it than that. -
The spacing in the heatsink assembly is for the larger heatpipes on the 1080 model. That's it so far as we can tell. No change to cold plate so it's highly probably the heatsink can bolt onto the 1070 version for adding cooling capacity.Last edited: Dec 4, 2016 -

EDIT like a mofo!!!
Um yeah. Mine has the Hump too. I.....well crap. I didn't even take a look just thought: "I don't remember that piece" and I go and look.....I'm here eating my words.
So disregard what I typed before. I have the hump and the Tobii...so it's most likely for that. -
Im wondering if it is a revision for more stability on the lid hinge? Mines a mid november laptop with the 1070 and i have it. most of the early reviews i saw didnt have it.
edit: I guess it makes sense if its for tobii eye tracking, maybe they needed more depth or something? and the early models i saw didnt have it... im not sure. -
Kinda looks unaesthetic..
-
There is a model with the base1080p IPS panel that doesn't have Tobii and the bump that goes with it.

Just to add...
Mine has the hump too...

Can you guys tell us what the logic behind this change is? -
Its confirmed the hump is because of Tobii eye tracking module as per Dell Service manual. Thanks to @win32asmguyLast edited: Dec 7, 2016 -

Isn't the bump where the Tobii hardware is located? I thought all laptops that have Tobii have a bump like that, or a thicker lid.
This module in the service manual is what I am referring to:

Why does the Alelinware 17 R4 has two different lids?
