    Hi,

I am not that impressed with the AUO (AUO109D) display in my new AW17R4... The colour vibrancy and maximum brightness do not come close to the Sharp IPS panel in my XPS13.

I have heard people mention how impressed they are with their LG panel...

Does anyone have experience of both..?
Is it worth getting Dell to send me an LG panel to replace the AUO one..? (Would they even do that?!)

I had the exact same issue. Just got my AUO panel replaced last week with an LG.

Yes it is completely worth it. Do it. It's a night and day difference. The AUO looked like complete crap. The screen looked grainy due to the anti-glare coating. It was so bad it was driving me crazy.

When I called, I told the Alienware tech I specifically wanted the LG panel. He said they can't use the specific part you tell them; the repair depot uses what they have available. BUT from what he was aware they were currently replacing the FHDs with LG panels. He said "I assure you that you will be satisfied"

Crossed my fingers, sent it in, and when I got it back they replaced it with the LG panel.

    Dell part #JWGJ6
    LG Model # LGD0513

One more very important thing: make sure you tell them to replace the bezel at the same time. They changed the panel, but they reused the same bezel without applying new adhesive. When I got it back, the workmanship looked like crap. The bezel was not well adhered to the panel.. With the LED lights on, you could see the lights from the Alienware logo bleeding through the gap between the panel and bezel. I had to send it back a second time for a new bezel.

Check what screen you have using Hwinfo. If you hate it, chances are it's an AUO screen.

Thanks for the reply waltmd, I think I'll give that a try myself...

One thing though, aren't they supposed to come to you..? I thought our premium warranties include on-site..?!

My particular AUO panel overclocks to 75Hz, if anyone is interested...
Strange thing is, I tried it out in FarCry4, but the the game still only played at 60, and when I quit to desktop I saw the frequency in Nvidia Settings flash from 60 back to 75... Odd...

Seems my XPS has a 400nit panel, so that'll explain brighness comparison too...

    UPDATE:

Just got off the phone with Dell. They are sending an engineer to me on Wednesday with a replacement panel. I explicitly requested part number JWGJ6, and the guy seemed to comply, so let's see what happens...

Most fhd ips laptop panels are 6bit per channel.

Yea they can send someone out to you. That's what they were going to do at first. I just opted to send it to them instead.

Call back and have them send a replacement bezel at the same time. Well you don't have to, but it might save you a second visit if the old bezel doesn't adhere well to the new panel

I mentioned the bezel, but we couldn't identify the part number, so we settled on making sure the engineer came with replacement sticky pads for it instead. I hope that'll do the trick...

Here is how it was listed on my repair order from the repair facility:

    PN5XV - LCD & Accessory

I know it says estimated return Monday June 19, but I got it back already Friday :)

And yes I can confirm new bezel and it's all good now

Strangely, that part number doesn't feature in my current list of components...

Update: Just had the Dell engineer round, and he's kindly replaced the AUO for an LG...
Got to agree, it's a much better screen; none of that horrible fuzziness to distract me...

He didn't bring a replacement bezel, but I think I've got away with just using the old one again, it looks neat enough, though won't know for sure about extra light bleed until it gets dark...

    :D

@ponx @waltmd May i ask you to describe the process you went through to get the LG panel? Bluntly honest im not sure what to ask to actually get someone out to replace it or send it in, im still waiting on an exchange unit for an absolute lemon.

    Also sorry is 1month is too long for a necro here ><;

Just call them, tell them your screen looks really fuzzy/burry, and you need it replaced with an LG panel.

They may try to waste over an hour of your time by having you run a bunch of diagnostic tests to rule out driver/software issues. That is what they did to me.. of course I knew it was a waste of time bc it was the panel itself that was crap, but I had to play along.

Maybe you can avoid that by letting them know you've researched the issue and you're aware that it's simply a physical defect of the AUO panel. The AUO panel itself is crap and you need it replaced with an LG one instead.

Remember the LG panel is Dell part #JWGJ6

You may also want to tell them to replace it with a new bezel. Otherwise they're going to use the same old one. Look at my pics/post on the first page.

The replacement unit has the trash screen again, and this is before even being able to test software on it. Is there any hope for having it fixed without sending it in?

I was denied at first when I mentioned the blurry/ grainy screen; however, I was approved when I sent in pictures of backlight bleed. Mention backlight bleed and they'll know what you're talking about.

They only offered to replace with another AUO panel, so just gonna try to DIY it and hope I can put the bezel on without issue.

necrobump but this is right up the alley i've been sniffing around today: i just got a Precision 7720 with this AUO109D and it's terribly grainy. i know this isn't an Alienware system but i don't see anyone swapping displays with these 7720s. i have been telling ProSupport that the grainy texture is a deal killer and we'll see what they say. no matter what i have to fix this, even if i have to source the stuff myself.

can i just source a genuine JWGJ6 and swap it in?

    Hey @builthatch and all others.

I suffer from the same grainy AUO and it makes my head hurt (really get headache and eye strain from it).

Did you manage to find out how to get a LG Phillips?

I had a quite a lot talks with DELL customer support and they cannot pick a specific panel from their storage. It is all stored under the same label and it is basically down to luck what you get, when you get a replacement.

So anyone know how to get your hands on the LG one?

i had to pay a premium for my panel off ebay, but u need to be careful since most sellers on there will give u a generic "compatible" model, the seller i got mine from specifically said it was the dell P/N LG Phillips panel, but i did take a gamble cos i wasnt so sure, but yeah, it ended up being the exact panel so i guess i lucked out. heres the info on back of panel
