hey folks I have an early AW 15r3 and am going through the recommended repasting process. I see links to the .5 mm and 1 mm thermal pads, but not the .1 mm pad. I've looked online and haven't found a good source. Can somebody post a link? Again, I have an early model, so it does not have the .1 mm pad already.

    Help is appreciated.

Isn't that the thickness where paste would be used? A 1/10th of 1 mmm thick pad ( similar to the thickness of a sheet of paper) would be very fragile.

I don't think so. The videos show pads being recommended, and also even show that Dell has now updated their build using the. 1mm pad. I have an earlier build date so mine has the thicker one.

Have you searched ebay? I can see some 0.1mm copper shims from China. Would these be suitable?

The switch to the .1mm pads was covered in this 3 video series:

The .1mm pads go over the chokes which on normal motherboards I have not generally seen heatsinks on them.

    Also according to the expert:

Personally I plan to replace the .1mm with K5 and replace the rest with Fujipoly. (for a 15r3 1070)

    Hope this helps:

    http://www.digikey.com/products/en/fans-thermal-management/thermal-pads-sheets/218?k=&pkeyword=&pv1989=0&pv147=21&FV=aec002e,ffe000da&mnonly=0&newproducts=0&ColumnSort=147&page=1&quantity=0&ptm=0&fid=0&pageSize=25

Make sure to use thermal pads and NOT thermal adhesive tape!!!

I personally would just use thick paste like Gelid GC Extreme. K5 Pro works great as well; it is viscous and compresses very well with heatsink pressure.

EDIT: Actually, it appears that the link I posted are not thermal pads. From what I am reading they are "phase change compounds" that come in sheets and they soften and flow when heated. So it is basically the grey stuff found pre-installed on heatsinks. Sorry bout that. But search Digikey anyway; if it exists, they probably stock it.

Alternatively, given it is just for the chokes the thing it comes with is likely fine and there is no real point of changing it other than for the hell of it. I doubt that your going to get a better OC or anything by replacing the 0.1mm pad/tape with anything.

I think mine is a 1mm pad on those. Remember I have one of the first batches, before dell fixed anything. I did find this. It's one of those phase change pads too.

The thermal "pad" used on the chokes aren't important, just leave them alone.

.1 mm that exist is akasa, and that's not thermal pad, it's thermal TAPE. It doesn't transfer much heat and is very sticky making later disassemblies quite troublesome if the needs to arise.

I believe the alternative to the akasa is 3m thermally conductive tissue tape, not really sure how effective this compares to the akasa but I don't think it really matters.

Yes you will literally goop it on the chokes like sticking gum on them, you should only need a bit on each one. It is non conductive so no need to worry about it too much but obviously be as clean as possible. In the video you show they needed a lot for 2mm thick but your just doing .1mm so you only need a thin layer of the stuff not globs like in the video.

Hell at .1mm you could probably just as easily get away with slabbing some ICD thermal paste on there.
