I'm about to get a new laptop, probably going to be a 17" Alienware with a touch screen, but I heard that people using the stock charger will run into throttling issues. I'd like to get the 240w charger, but the one from Dell is way too expensive and I've heard of people getting them for much cheaper, but they never say where.
The only ones I could find on Amazon were for the M17x.
Also, while not related to the topic, should I be worried about anything else? I know there's ghosting issues, but I'm not sure if it's for the touch screen version. Is there a significantly superior version coming out soon?
Thanks in advance, and sorry if this has been asked before, but I searched for it and couldn't find it. I hope I didn't overlook it.

I want to say it will but try asking others. Would not want to destroy your system.

No, the 330W from my Alienware 18 (2014) DOES NOT WORK with my friend's Alienware 17 R2 (2015) (i7-4720HQ CPU, GTX 970m GPU, glossy 1080p touch display), nor does it work with my Dell Precision M6800. The system reports an incompatible AC adapter on POST (power on self test). I would not expect it (330 watt) to work with the Alienware 15 (2015) but I cannot be certain as I don't have a 15 with which to test compatibility.
I have successfully ordered the following items from Amazon (At a discount over Dell):
Dell 240 watt AC adapter:
P/N: "PA-9E" (search for this on amazon)
Price: 50-62 dollars (varies by the week and by the seller).
Works with (*confirmed by me*): Alienware 17 R2 (2015), Dell Precision M6800 (with extreme CPU), Dell Precision M6600, Dell Precision M6500, and Dell Precision M6400.
Example: "Original Dell PA-9E 240W Slim Design Replacement AC adapter for Dell Notebook Model: Dell Precision M6500, Dell Precision M6600. Compatible Part Numbers: 0J211H, 0J938H, 0U896K, 0Y044M, 330-3514, 330-4128, 330-4342, ADP-240AB, ADP-240AB B, GA240PE1-00, J211H, J938H, PA9E, PA-9E, PA-9E Family, U896K, Y044M."
Dell 180 watt AC adapter
P/N: "331-7957" (search for this on amazon)
Price: 50-54 dollars (varies by the week and by the seller).
Works with (*confirmed by me*): Alienware 17 R2 (2015)
Example: "Ac Adapter Power Cord Suply Cable Charger Dell Precision ALIENWARE Vostro Laptop PC System: Dell Precision M4600 M4700 M6300 M6400 Vostro 360, Dell Precision M6600 M6700 Dell PowerEdge 2950, Dell Alienware M14X M15x M17x M17x R3 M17x R4; Dell compatible part 74X5J 074X5J DWG4P 0DWG4P, Dell 331-1465 JVF3V 0JVF3V DA180PM111, Dell ADP-180MB B, FA180PM111 A-0180ADU00-201, Dell 19.5V, 9.23A 180W 120v-240v worldwide; DELL Alienware M14X AM14X-6833BK 180W DA180PM111, DELL Precision M4600 180W 331-1465 074X5J, Dell WW4XY 180w DA180PM111 PRECISION M6600 M6700, 180W AC Adapter DP/N 0JVF3V MODEL FA180PM111 TW1P, Dell Precision M6400 Dell XPS L702X 180W 331-1465, Dell DA180PM111 ADP-180MB 74X5J DWG4P 331-7957"
Testing with a Killawatt meter, the 180 watt AC adapter pulls near its rated capacity from the wall when the 2015 with GTX 970m and CPU are both stressed hard. My friend uses the 180W when he travels and 240W at home and at work. I would order the 240W myself, for the headroom. It's not much bigger, not much heavier, not much more expensive than the 180W.
With that said, you can't beat 99¢. That's about all I'd pay for a 180W, though.Last edited: Jul 21, 2015Dilanio likes this. -

(update)
I went back and checked my written notes. It turns out the 330W DID work with the AW 17 R2. Also, the 210W DID work with the AW 17 R2 as well. (The 210W is the one that comes with certain Dell docking stations). It was the Precision M6800 with the Extreme CPU that complained about the 210W and the 330W.
That will teach me from using my memory. Sorry about that. -

If your laptop has the 980m they will replace the 180w with the 240w free. It took me 10 minutes on the phone, no hassle.

Where can I find the 240w charger outside of Dell's site?
