I recently updated my BIOS to allow for 32 gigs of RAM. I'd like to upgrade from 8 and get rid of the page file. So my question is what works the best now with these laptops? Last time I looked the DDR4 timings were terrible.

I bought some DDR4 2800MHz sticks - let's see what max speed the motherboard will allow (I have the 15 inch R2)

Any other type of memory might work but nothing that we can recommend officially so I'd recommend you to use a DDR4 2133 MHz frequency.

Seeing as the RAM OC/clock settings were removed from any BIOS version after 1.2.2 you may find that installing "faster" RAM ends up running at the stock 2133MHz though, I cannot confirm this as I see no reason to update my BIOS from 1.2.2 unless I actually want problems... :D

Stick with 2133MHz and save yourself some cash instead.

Been running 32GB Corsair Vengeance DDR4 @ 2666MHz for a while now, no issues at all, straight plug & play. All BIOS versions recognize it's full speed including the latest one. AW17R3.
