Hello Alienware fans,
I own an Alienware 17 r4 with the 1080p 60 hz display. Lately I have been considering upgrading my screen so that it can have a faster refresh rate. I am aware that I can upgrade to the QHD 120hz tn panel or the UHD ips panel, as long as i replace the 30 pin connection cable with a 40 pin. However, I feel like both of these aren't really desirable options and I was wondering if there was any other way I could use a panel for other laptops such as the Asus models that have 1080p 144hz displays. So, my question is, is it actually possible to upgrade my 17 r4's screen with something such as this:

Thank you so much for taking your time to read and maybe even reply to this post.

I upgraded a 17 r4 with a 120hz Chimei TN panel pulled from an MSI GT73VR. It works great, including brightness adjustment. When I did the upgrade the 40 pin cable isn't compatible with the IR webcam. I never got around to getting a Tobii lid and the correct webcam module, but I am assuming it would all work fine if you get the parts. Also be sure NOT to get the 40 pin cable used with the Sharp UHD panel. The connector is on the wrong side and it uses a slightly smaller pin pitch which is essentially incompatible with all of the other 17.3 inch 40-pin displays.
The nice part about the Chimei TN panel is the wide gamut display (as good color as the 13R3 OLED, other than black levels), and it does not have any inverse ghosting issues that effect the 144hz 17.3 inch panels. It also has a very light anti-glare coating so solid colors are not grainy like on most AUO FHD panels.Dominic Sobocinski and c69k like this. -
Hey, Thanks for your reply! How was the color reproduction? I'm not sure if I wanted to go the 1440p TN route, just because there are 1080p options with higher refresh rates. It would be easier to drive a 1080p screen and IPS is suppose to have better colors and angles. Just can't seem to find anyone who has upgraded their alienware to a 120hz 1080p screen.

The color was 94% NTSC, so pretty close to what the 4k panel could do. Unfortunately the factory calibration on the panel was not particularly great, so I used the calibration profiles that Ultra Male provided for his GT73VR.
If you want an IPS panel you could try the AUO 144hz panel. Back when the majority of people were trying display upgrades for the 17R4 the 144hz panels did not exist yet, but I imagine there is a good chance they would just work. -
I think I will! But I was looking at the panel on ebay, and there appears to be no mounting points? I'm not very sure how that is suppose to work.

it might be more costly, but you could always source an LG 1080p panel like i did, its rated for 60hz, but i was able to overclock mine to 100hz. then you wouldnt have to worry about swapping the 30pin cable out. not an ideal solution i know, but thought id throw the idea out there
Upgrading 17 r4 screen (Yes, another one)
