It was considered a rumor and maybe even a nicely done photoshop. But its official. The M15 has been announced and during October they will show more of it.

They consider it a replacement for the AW13.

There are some photos of it and a comparison with the regular 15 on the notebookcheck page.

Personally, I don't like the shape of the lower lid edge (looks like those older models plus it's still huge) and the keyboard could have been nicer, but it looks interesting as long as the cooling system works well.

Ehh, the design just looks a bit forced/fussy due to wanting to be "thin". Like the hinges, screen shape, and the bezel design just isn't doing it for me.

I like the shape etc but not the glossy bezel, i feel that it would be a bit distracting but shiny plastic also tends to look cheaper than it is. The rest I like. But in comparison with the normal 15, its only a little thinner and the footprint itself is only smaller. But thats not a problem for me. Sames with the bezels. Rather have the 1070 that I have now than slim bezel and a 1070 maxQ.

I do think they made the cooling more efficient (less suspectible to QC issues). But I dont have thermal issues myself so again not a reason to switch within 1 year of owning the 15R3.

Well they offer both so I dont see why it would be a problem.

    I think it looks exciting.

I think it will probably throttle to hell

but i like thin bezzels and slim laptops so im going to remain optimistic until reviews start coming out.

I need to see detailed analysis of the cooling before I spend a dollar. Also, the lateral specs to current gen 15 is a reason to just wait until there is actually something new to buy here. 9th gen Intel and Geforce RTX 20x0 so there is actually an upgrade.

My main 2 grievances without having more info: those bezels....and the 144 Hz screen is still TN. Razer and MSI have used a gorgeous 144 Hz IPS 1080p screen, why can't Alienware?

Also, didn't the latest iteration of the 15 have per-key RGB lighting? But this newer model has 4 zones on keyboard? Good job there Alienware...

It's thinner, and smaller bezels, nice but at what cost?
    - Low profile keyboard. I hate those, Alieanware its relatively long travel keys are my favorite laptop keyboards.
    - No rgb touchpad.
    - No light strips at the sides (I like those, but to be fair alienware 13 didn't have those either)
    - No g-sync option anymore
    - Most likely worse thermals

These make this laptop a no go for me. I did built my own desktop 2 years ago, I plan to sell it and switch back to a most likely alienware laptop, but not like this.
I want a decent 17 inch alienware laptop, that isn't too thick (with that I mean like the super high end Aorus and asus gaming laptops), and a new next gen GPU, like a new 2080m or something.
But at this rate, that might be not the case.
I hope this is a separate model, and that they won't change all the models to this.

Also here is another video, that shows more about the laptop:

They dropped G-Sync because it is mutually exclusive with Optimus is my guess. They also do not have to have and support 2 different motherboards and sets of screens this way - they did have to do that before.

This thing does not have an i9 and are sporting 1060/1070maxq according to that video... I don't think it'll ever get an i9 due to heat. Maybe 2060maxq if that ever exists later.

But judging by the 2080 desktop performances, the mobile performance increase won't be much at all.

Yeah, absolutely agree, I forgot to mention that as the worst offender. The glossy plastic around the edge really kills it, though I like this trapezoidal shape of the laptop when it's closed down. Not sure if that means they'll use that eye-tracking thing again or it's just a tacky design fart.

Of course, I won't swap my 17 R4 with it anytime soon, but if I needed more mobility, I would definitely get the m15 and the external graphics AMP while at home.

The 17 R4/R5 is rather thin as 1080 17" laptops go, about the same thickness as the top Aorus X9 model. The top Asus (Chimera) is way thicker, but with no noise improvement to show for.

The only exception would be the 15" GX501 with the 1080 Max-Q which is rather thin (though the keyboard had to be moved to the bottom edge to allow it to cool the 1080), so perhaps you were referring to that model? If so, yeah, the 17" variant would be rather cool, but even the 15" model is quite expensive and rather niche, that it's probably not worth designing the 17" one as those sell way less presumably.

If true, that will greatly change my opinion of this laptop :). As is, I am at 2 years on my 15r3 which is a new record for me going back to 2008 lol

Everything I had seen in print, showed it as TN which is why I was concerned

Just watched that whole AMA, some good info. I am very interested to see how the cooling/noise are. If they are acceptable, I may be upgrading around Black Friday again!

Also interested to see how accessible all components are from the bottom. Fingers crossed that the need for thinness did away with the stupid full coverage plastic shroud like the current 15 has.

I don't get the choice to include a 10-key; that kills it for me (I can't deal with the keyboard being that far off-center) and I hope this isn't a sign that the regular 15 will get one at its next iteration.

I was actually happy to see the addition, was going to get a 17" next just to have one. They are useful for me for the games I play
