    I am looking to buy an SSD 1TB to store games, photos and data.

    There are a few on Amazon, Samsungs about £230 and Crucial etc about £130 - very large price difference.

    Has anyone any suggestions?

    1. XPG SX8200 PRO definitely
    2. Samsung 970 Evo Plus maybe

    But then, I would make them system drive if the 512 you have is slower.

    Most people won't notice a difference between a fast NVMe drive and a SATA SSD. Looking at the product guide for the 17 R5 says that the three m.2 slots will work with PCIe or SATA drives, but I don't know that from first hand experience. If the 17 R5 supports SATA m.2 drives then you could pick one of those cheap Crucial drives up for extra storage. If it won't, you can often find good deals on the ADATA SX8200 (non-pro) 960GB drives (at least here in the States).

    The Cheapest is the Crucial P1, which is priced like a Sata SSD. Not the fastest NVMe out there, probably one of the slower ones, but still fast enough and like custom90gt mentioned, hard to notice any difference.

    I currently have the Samsung SM961 at 512GB - I think it is this one:

    https://www.samsung.com/semiconductor/ssd/client-ssd/MZVKW512HMJP/

    And to be honest I do not know how I could tell how fast/slow it is. On paper it is 3200 / 1700 MB/sec.

    I only have space for an NVME, not another 2.5".

    The choice is between these:

    Samsung 970 Evo Plus == £230
    ADATA XTG SX8200 == £200
    Crucial P1 == £135

    NVMe is an interface, not a connector. M.2 is the connector and can be keyed for SATA or NVMe. The crucial P1 is a NVMe drive and isn't too power hungry.

    OK this is a list of 1TB SSDs M.2 interface in order of cost:
    £255 - SanDisk SDSSDXPM2-1T00-G25 Extreme PRO ( 600 TBW )
    £232 - Samsung 970 Evo Plus ( 600 TBW )
    £192 - ADATA Ssd - 1Tb, M.2 2280, Pcie Gen3X4, Sx8200 ( 640 TBW )
    £191 - Corsair CSSD-F960GBMP510 Force Series MP510 (1,700 TBW )
    £136 - Crucial CT1000P1SSD8 P1 1000 GB 3D NAND NVMe ( 200 TBW )
    £116 - Crucial CT1000MX500SSD4 1000 GB MX500 SATA ( 360 TBW )

    The last Crucial MX500 is SATA and slower than the others.

    The other Crucial (P1) is also slower and has a worse TBW than the others.

    The Corsair is as fast as anything and has amazing TDW and is cheaper than the others. The ADATA 2280 is also great but has worse TBW. All the above according to Tom's.

    I think I'd go for the Corsair.

    Looks like a good choice. Really any of them you likely wouldn't notice a difference on (performance or endurance). By the time most people hit an SSD's lifespan replacements will be orders of magnitude better. Of course if you're using it as a scratch disk, or just copying files back and forth then it's probably worth looking into.

    Can't go wrong with the 970 EVO. It's proven.

    Just for games,videos and pictures, M.2 SATA is more than enough and give consistent Real world transfer rates from any brands. NVMe gets too hot for normal tasks and I'd recommend NVMe when you're doing short burst IO. For consistent and no speed throttling SATA pulls ahead at half the price and double the space of NVMe drives.

    In the end I bought the Corsair MP510 which arrived today. I installed it and noticed there is no room for the bundled AKASA heatsink.I copied around 700MB from my old 2.5" spin drive to it, took a while, during which time it raised to around 56C. It seems to be OK.

    Update: with the GPU fully on, it has gone to 64C. Its brother, the 512MB Samsung is at 57C. I am not sure if this is a cause for alarm.

    I've been using this WD Blue m.2 in my htpc for about 4 months now. Its for watching movies and playing games. My htpc boots fast enough that I'll be on the desktop before my Projector finishes turning on. And I have a Laser projector so it's on in fifteen seconds. So this is a very fast drive for general purpose. Haven't had any issues with it either.

    If it last ~3 times longer than the other stuff, you made a good choice.
