Should I trade in my 15r3 for a better GPU and SSD?

    Hey guys,

I just picked up an oculus rift and my first gaming PC and am having a blast. Current setup is an 15 R3 with 1 TB hard drive, 16 GB ram, i7 and gtx 1060 card (6gb).

I have only had it for a few days but noticed the store I purchased it from has a higher model on sale now. It is the same setup as my current laptop with the addition of the additional ssd (256 boot) and the 1070 card instead of the 1060 I have.

They said I can exchange my current model no problem. At the end of the transaction, it should cost me about and additional $400 for the swap. Is it worth it or should I just throw a 256 card in my current one and be happy with the 1060?

Also, I have read a lot of issues with cooling this PC and was curious if it was any different for the 1060 vs the 1070.

    Thanks

Buy your SSD from the market. 960 EVO, 850 EVO,MX300,MX500 are your choices.

so is the 1070 not worth the extra price tag for my application?

Just to clarify, it's $400 for an additional SSD (going from 1TB HDD to 1TB HDD + 256gb SSD) and an upgrade from GTX 1060 to 1070? If so, that's not too bad but IMO unless you're going to benefit from the 1070 improvement (plenty of Youtube videos show comparisons) with your gaming/monitor/etc, you might be better off saving the cash for an AGA and a better full sized card down the line.

(but hey, what would I know, I bought the AW15R3 a year ago and just bought an AW13R3 with the same CPU/GPU combination... because the 15 was too big/heavy for carrying around everywhere particularly for int'l travel)

I mainly VR game and do not think the AGA is compatible with the rift.

I didn't notice GPU in the post I thought you had 1070 GPU. Sorry. If you are happy with temps on newer unit with an SSD and 1070 after exchange then go for it. If you're traveling then GTX 1070 will be a life saver since housing a 1060 or 1070 will make the weight of the laptop more or less similar.

I guess I am really just looking for reassurance that the 1060 will be enough for VR needs and not be out dated in a year.

For a year, you can use 1060. VR needs a minimum spec of GTX 1060 and above.

Whilst a 1070 would be better, I'm not sure how much longer it would still be 'current' for.

I stand by my original suggestion of an AGA - but if the Op values the portability aspect and expects to move around a lot (i.e. an AGA or eGPU is just not practical) then I'd upgrade now whilst he has the chance.
