This is the driver for the Alienware 13 R1 (and other Alienware Echo versions) for the STMicroelectronics 3 Axis Digital Accelerometer.

According to this blog post here, the problem arises where Windows 10 cannot delete Windows.old folder directory is because the operating system (or the computer itself) is using the ST_Accel.sys driver, therefore it prevents the operating system from deleting the folder.

I would like to delete the folder. I went ahead and tried all of the steps mentioned in the blog post, but in the end, I still cannot remove or delete the Windows.old folder directory.

Is there anything else I can do to get rid of this, other than reinstalling Windows 10? I cannot reinstall Windows 10, because of financial reasons, personal reasons, and other issues that can be solved when I have completed something very important.

If I cannot get rid of this other than reinstalling Windows 10, then never mind about this. I'll just admit that I can't for the time being.

    Thanks.

Have you tried installing that driver again? Or try uninstalling that driver at first and then try removing wondows.old using cleanmgr.

You might also try the disk clean up option from the properties of your hard drive. Just check and look for previous Windows Installations, then just delete it.

Like OP said, its used currently used by Windows as a process from Windows.old folder. Only option left is to use Unlocker to unlock held process thereby allowing the files to be removed. Booting to safe mode and then deleting is fine option.
