    Hello, I have had my new Alienware R5 17 with the core i9 & GTX 1080 for about a week. I got it repasted & new heat sync replaced two days ago. Now after the first day it was fine temps were 77c on full load at 4.0ghz I was happy. After the second day it went back to being 92c on full load dropping down to 3.5ghz. Dell says that this is normal, does anyone know why this could be ? I also used my own paste I bought.

    One of the picture is after the repaste then another after a day after repaste.

    Any help would be appreciated. [IMG] [IMG]

    I've not heard of that happening before, but with the infamous tripod i suppose anything is possible. Honestly, if you aren't happy with the temps, i'd just return it and get your money back. If Dell are telling the truth and that is "normal", then the design is clearly not very good. It might be possible to fix the temperature issues with some more work, but its up to you if you deem it worthwhile.

    That's the exact same thing that's happened to me. I've had to arrange a return. Mine is a 8750/1070

    I agree, I've tried to undervolt & other things just hoping other users can explain what would help. I think it could be improper contact on CPU. I don't believe I should be getting those results. I just hope someone with the same model as mine will find me a good solution. I really want solid temps that last more then one day.

    Poor contact is the most likely cause. I'd try asking on the Alienware 17 owner's lounge as they may know how to fix it (if possible).

    I asked people on the page no answer yet. I did notice two cores (4-5) perfectly cool. I think paste not spreader right or heat sync not tighted correctly. [IMG]

    Uneven temps are "normal" for the tripod heatsink. Most CPU heatsinks have 4 screws in each corner which gives you an even tightness across the core, but the Alienware's tripod cannot provide enough tightness.

    A possible solution would be to remove the heatsink, repaste it and then slowly tighten each of the screws a little so they are as even as possible. I would not expect particularly impressive results however, as the heatsink's design is the main issue.

    Looks like paste was used in small amounts and didn't cover enough. Like @Arrrrbol said, warped heatsink is also a issue.
    Which paste did you use? You might have to spread the paste evenly (Eg. Kryonaut, Coolermaster maker gel, gelid extreme). You can lap the heatsink and swap the stock thermal pads for gelid or arctic.
    MX4 is useless if you used it earlier.

    Incorrect. The so called tripod works fine if you have the correct thermal pad sizing. I also came across 4 screw heatsinks with uneven temps because the thermal pads where crap.

    4 screws can make a greater pressure though but if the pads are too thick, the pads are simply too thick and you have to replace them.

    @rinneh nailed it.
    This was exactly going to be my point as well. I'd bet that it's the pad thickness which is the issue for sure (as well as ****ty paste like @Vasudev said)
