Hey all,
Anyone who clicked on this thread knows what this is about. I'm trying to get a focused, large thread so Dell/Alienware can no longer ignore our requests for a fixed fan profile in their new laptop BIOS releases. It is unacceptable that one has to downgrade to the release day BIOS version and request a larger power supply just to get the laptop to run the way it is intended without cooking the chipset above 85*C.
I am requesting that the fan profile from A00 be used in the newest iteration of BIOS updates for these laptops. These laptops should not be idling above 50*C, and under load should be floating around 70*C-80*C without compromising performance, not unlike the BIOS release version A00.
Dell, you owe it to your loyal customers to make this happen. Broken fan profiles, fans failing to spin up in time to cool the chipset under load, high ceiling temps and the like are unacceptable when one has such a high performance machine. Do yourselves and your customers a favor, and resolve this issue before you lose any more market share to your competitors.

Good luck!

i sign this, at least give us a choice to switch profiles in bios.
-
how to sign? lol.. im a newbie.. ill just say +1

Please comment with a "signed" and if you want, like the original post. Just trying to continue to build awareness that this is something that needs to be addressed. Thank you for the support so far! Let's keep this relevant!

Dell doesn't care... That's the reality of it. We've been asking for fixed fan tables since A03.. They say they'll notify the engineers.. Why did they even change them from A00?? lol. There are 2 ideastorms already posted for this issue, and we've heard nothing except an excuse as to how they are now monitoring the temps in a different way (Even though most chips have been internally monitored for some time with DTS).. And how they don't have funding for BIOS updates as they are done by a 3rd party.. (Compal in our cases..). Better luck next models..

I sign this because i'm really disappointed with the fan profile on new AW 17 models, i just bought one of them, patched A05 bios, the CPU temp is about 87 C° on load but fans are perma silent, like not working, i'll try to set up bios A00, but DELL damn do somethings!

I am telling you from first hand experience.. the only way you are going to get Dell to even remotely care is by doing a BBB complaint coupled with several phone calls to tech support showing reasoning.
This works in single BBB complaints so if there was a way to get a massive amount of people to do them at once that would be helpful.
The BBB is kinda of a sham of sorts as they actually pay BBB for advertising but in the same token the BBB will post complaints that go unresolved. Dellienware doesn't want that Im sure. I tried to make a post about this but no one on here cared. In order to get something done people have to be willing to put some effort into this or this giant corp wont care as they still sell products. -
Well then we all know what we need to do. If Dell/Alienware won't pay attention to it's community then we all need to take the time to file complaints with the BBB.

Mine never went above 83C under load but I'll signed this as a choice to choose is always better than nothing.

Fix the 18 first

I agree.
My Clevo P750ZM using a desktop Xeon processor idles in the 50s and typically peaks in the low 70s while gaming.
No reason for a mobile CPU with HALF (or almost half) the TDP to reach such high temps. -
signed, thay could at least take the fan profile from A00 and make it default for new the BIOS or allow us to choose from a quiet and high performance fan profiles.

Thank you all for the support. Keep the posts coming, and I will say here what I did on the Alienware Arena forums:
The problem is the following BIOS versions that Dell/Alienware released resolve issues that may be important to people (Sleep state CPU clocking, hybrid power, etc.). The basis of my point here is that we should not have to rollback to an earlier BIOS version just to get the same temps that were experienced in the release date BIOS. If Dell/Alienware is unable or unwilling to do this then it is indicative of their lack of consideration of their customers and will be reflected in loss of market share to their competitors. I recommend everyone who agrees with this post continue this conversation by signing the petition (post "Signed" or "+1") and file a complaint with the BBB (Better Business Bureau). I also would like to imagine that there are some people here like myself who would be willing to take matters into our own hands and write our own version of BIOS A05 with the fan tables from A00 edited in. If anyone is interested in doing that, please state so in this thread.ufomammut likes this. -

Even most important to me, fix the crazy cpu throttling when both gpu and cpu are under heavy use.
PS : even if they resolve everything tomorrow i will never buy anymore something to that company.

Hey all,
So I had a call with some techs and a level 2 tech who has been working in conjunction with the people who handle the BIOS revisions and this is actually on their radar. I was assured that the next BIOS revision, set to be released at the latest by August, will be addressing this as well as other concerns the community has addressed. I was unable to get much more information out of them, but I will stay in contact with them to make sure this is addressed as soon as possible.
Thanks again, and let's all continue to support this thread and keep it relevant.

Signed. I have tested A00, A02, and A05, and A00 provided the best temperatures.

Yeah cpu is waaaay too hot.

Thanks again all who have participated in this thread. Please continue to post about your experiences pertaining to this issue.
If you can give example temperatures using BIOS A00 vs BIOS A05 along with your machine specs then that will help us have more of an argument to push for this to be resolved.
I will be reaching out to Dell again soon with more information on my end and to seek further information from them on the resolution of this as soon as possible.

Once I received my 240w PSU I will update it with comparison. -
on the stock A02 and when I flash A05, CPU temps would ROUTINELY be up in the 84-88 degree range. I could never hear the fans working.
When I flashed to A00, the temps dropped to around 59-65, which is much better than what it was on any other BIOS, but I think they can ramp up fans a little more to begin with, especially the 4980HQ. I am running with a -50mV undervolt as well. -
For reference, I have been experiencing essentially the same temps with the same BIOS revisions as Raidriar. This is blatantly a BIOS issue, not hardware. If anyone else has temps and specs, put them up here.
-
What's the problem with rolling back to A00, the other BIOS all bar A05 that fixes the sleep issue do not add any value?
-
my aw17 r2 goes up to 94 degrees while playing gta v with A05 bios i think i will revert back to A00 bios .
-
Signed, cmon dell lets get this fixed!
-
17 r2,switched from A05 i can confirm that temps are much better in A00 dropped about 10 or more degrees, i heard finally fans working when CPU temp reachs 67+ C° , and with a good cooling base , now temps are awesome. So we need an update/bug fixed bios , with fans working at least like in A00, shouldn't be too hard to build , alienware engineers, pls , you should be the best at this.
-
Hi all,
I anticipate having another call with Dell/Alienware this week and will update with what I learn. Thank you all again. Your support and information bring us one more step towards getting this resolved.

Hi for me its around 85C avg, 97C max on witcher 3. Also Current Limit Throttling can be obserced (power and thermal <1%). For sure, new tables needed. Keyboard is very hot. I think CPU should not exceed 90-92C in any moment! 97C is not acceptable. I think that there is an issue with reaction time of fans. They accelerate too late.

You need to do this on a petition site. This is not very organized as there are many comments in between.
Again I suggest people file a BBB complaint with Dell. For legitimate issues they actually work. Just be prepared to provide documentation and proof. If several people show there is an issue it will get more attention then just a list of people typing "signed". Just saying. -
-
My take:
The BBB complaint option will probably yield something. The BBB.org really does hold companies accountable.
Most companies are like this. (Sadly) The sooner you realize companies (virtual entities) are like raging psychopaths, then their behavior makes sense.
The problem is: they already have your money. So the key decision makers "don't care." Support (to the decision makers) is a cost to be managed with beans to be counted by bean counters.
My suggestion, keep opening support tickets, and get your sales rep (if you can still contact him or her) to intervene on your behalf Give him or her the support ticket / case numbers with Dell. Keep pressing with support. If they close tickets on you, open another one. Feel their feet to the fire. Then when support options are exhausted, ask for a refund.
Remember ... raging psychopaths... the decision makers don't want to give you your money back.
I had a similar problem with the drivers with the Lenovo Thinkpad X240. It was only when I threatened to RETURN 17 COMPUTERS BACK TO THEM, and only then, and when I started the return proceedings, did something finally get done and fixed.
Remember .. raging psychopaths ... -

UPDATE. Dell, any official answers?
-
For sure. I do recommend people file a complaint with the BBB as well. I already have. I am also currently calling Dell/Alienware about this as I type...

Hey all,
If you're experiencing these issues with your products, please feel free to leave a review here. Should make some waves...

I have the same issue, complain to Dell and didn't get a reply as expect. How about IdeaStrom guys? Will it work like BBB? I see there is 11 votes already. Still low..

Alienware 15 review by MobileTechReview
Lisa calls out the 180psu problem on gtx 980m alienware systems, being something viral lets hope that dell get their hands on it ASAP.

Got in touch with notebookcheck. Want to ask them to write some notes near the reviews of AW about problems we face and will try to persuade them to lower the position in rank-list. But still. Not sure it will work
