I am completely new to all of this overclocking business and I have been reading a lot but I'd like some clarification and maybe some numbers that I should be shooting for. I am using MSI Afterburner and the Uningine Valley benchmark test. Right off the bat I tried setting the memory boost to +500 and it just instantly crashed my computer. I tried a more modest +250 and that worked, so I went to the gpu clock and I set it to +100 and slowly worked my way up to +200. I have no idea what kind of FPS increases I should be expecting. What is the ratio that I should be increasing my gpu memory compared to my gpu clock? What are some numbers that I should try as the highest I can go? Does afterburner apply these settings as soon as I start my computer if I set it to start on windows start?
I have already undervolted my cpu by -.170 which seems to be working just fine after a few stress tests. I never went lower than that because I never saw anyone else go that low and my thermals were great to begin with.
I appreciate the help in advance.
EDIT: I managed to get +200 on my GPU clock, and +300 on the memory clock without Uningine Valley hiccuping or crashing. Does this sound about right? It only translated into basically a 2fps increase as far as I can tell. Does this also sound right?

+300 core and +200 cpu should be very stable indeed If you go above 8600 mhz on the ram, you will start to lose performance (at least I do) with micron memory. Mine is running at +300 ram (8600 mhz) and +230 core stable with liquid metal. I can push the core to +250 but I had a couple of crashes at that frequency.

Remember guys....bigger numbers doesn't always mean better. You just have to find the sweet spot.
