Hopefully this isn't too stupid of a question.... For my AW 17 R5 with i9 - I set BIOS to OC profile 3 (5ghz). I then run a cpu stress test and temps are fine hanging around 55 degrees no throttling.... Although my speed hangs out at 3.75ghz .... Once test stops, speeds bounce back to 4.8ghz....

I believe this is normal, right? Because all 6 cores are running it gets shifted down in speed? Or am I wrong?

i9-8950Hk should run 4.3GHz all 6 cores stock.
Probably crippled OC profiles. You need to put up own custom OC settings. Post your questions in the proper thread (for your model) http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...5-owners-lounge.815492/page-133#post-10759125

Thank you for the information, i tried oc using the Alienware command center, sane thing.... I think this started with the last bios update... Can anybody with the latest bios confirm what speed your cpu runs at when stress testing?

Did Dell cripple the R5 because of heat issues?

Dell’s overclock profiles in bios have never worked. In none of their AW models, now or before. Probably same for their new OC app. Use the thread I linked for your questions. People prefer use/search the proper thread for the model.

"Although my speed hangs out at 3.75GHz" - That will only happen if there is throttling. If you haven't unlocked the processor yet in BIOS then this is likely power limit throttling. Which CPU do you have?

Just check power limit or any other limit reason being triggered in HWINFO. See here:

This will tell you that your CPU is being limited / throttled due to the motherboard starving it of power. To do this you and overclock properly, you will have to unlock the power controls which are the PL1 and PL2 values. If they read PL1: 45W and PL2: 60W (I think) then this is locked and will prevent you from boosting to a higher clock when the power consumption to the processor goes above the PL1 value.

This pic is showing in HWINFO a fully unlocked processor (set to 210W in BIOS):

And is therefore what you need to see first before attempting any overclock.

It's normal for your CPU to return to max clocks after stress test ends because it's not under any load, this is a false sign of your CPUs clock speed capability under full load and is completely normal. Depending on your CPU, when running all 6 cores at full load your CPU will run these at a lower speed compared to one single core running at max clock under load. I.e. Single core could be 4.8 but all 6 cores together will only be something like 4.2GHz each

its 4.3ghz stock boost clock for the i9 8950HK when stressing all 6 cores :)

thanks it was a guess without knowing what the CPU was :)
