    Hey guys,

Looking for opinions on which display to choose, I'm buying the 17 R4 from Dell Canada, specs are 7820hk, GTX 1070, 16gb ddr4, 256gb pcie ssd & 1tb hdd. I am buying it 99% for gaming, I'm not into video/photo editing etc so all I'm aiming for are ultra settings and highest possible framerates. The 1440p 120hz is very attractive for the refresh rate, but I am worried about 1440p gaming with these specs in a couple years that it won't be able to make use of 120hz (considering witcher 3, bf1 etc are quite demanding now). The 1080p display is also a little discouraging to me being only 60hz (although I've read there's support up to 100hz, please clarify?) so this is putting me in a position where I don't know which way to lean. 1080p 120/144hz would be the sweet spot in my opinion, but obviously that dream won't come true.

Thanks in advance for your opinions.

1440p imo is the sweet spot.

the 1070 is quite a capable card and can handle many games at this resolution, and with dx12 getting more attention it's a matter of time before 1440p is the new baseline.

plus the difference between 60hz and 120hz is night and day, i was devastated when i switched from the 120hz 3d screen on my M17 R4 to the 60hz 17 R3., with the 120hz you won't need vsync or any other form of it.

Thanks for the feedback, I feel like the 1440p is no doubt the best "today" option if you know what I mean. I guess I'll have to go with it and hope the 1070 will keep up with the next wave of demanding games.

Can anyone confirm overclocking the 1080p 60hz display on these notebooks, and how much is seemingly stable?

    i'm talking from experience here.

optimus enabled notebooks do not let you overclock displays, so no you most likely won't be able to, and i've been told that you can't benefit from external gsync monitors either.

the 1440p monitor is the best option right now for gaming, as the 1080p monitor is only 60hz without gsync or fast sync even, the 1440p one is 120hz and you won't need fast sync of vsync, it look much nicer, the gtx 1070 is almost tailor made for this resolution.

Thanks for this. I contacted them to upgrade to the GTX 1080 just to further benefit from 1440p but it is not yet offered in Canada. To wait or accept it..

i say wait, alienware is still ironing out some problems (wrong thickness thermal pads, white line issues with QHD displays) so i say don't order yet, a gtx 1080 would be absolutely killer at 1440p but i'd wait till Dell irons out the kinks unless you're prepared to do some tweaking yourself.
