How much CPU and GPU undervolting are people doing on their i9-9900k/RTX 2080 machines?

Guys, I just delided my 9900KF cpu on my area 51m, installed a coper IHS and I applied conductonaut thermal grizzly to both cpu and gpu along with protective foam around.
I am not that impressed with the lower temperatures. I tried prime 95 without avx and it hits 88c on the hotest core at stock and with -0.095 undervolt. There is no overclocking headroom (I tried x48 on all cores with the same undervolt which is the lower stable and it goes up to 98C).
Is this normal or I should get better temps?

You should have read before doing all that hassle. It is not worth it on this machine. Plus, I doubt if your copper IHS has the same z-height as your stock IHS because most of the aftermarket copper IHS are taller and it can really screw up the entire installation + warp the heat sink. Stick with Phobya Nanogrease Extreme (I get lower temps than kryonaut with this paste) on both CPU and GPU and you should be as good as you can get. The only place where you need LM is between the dye and the IHS, that's it. This thing has been so extensively discussed in this thread in the past and in so much detail that I'm already feeling exhausted typing all this here once again. So take your time and read through, you'll get plenty of info.

The z-height of the IHS is 100% the same as the original, but it has less height on the inside area only, it is making contact with the die and there is only a small gap around the perimeter of IHS in which I have put temperature resistant glue to fill the gap. So I am sure there is no problem with the IHS, it is making perfect contact with the die. I have applied conductonaut under and on top of the IHS. Before deliding with the same settings I was getting about 93-94c on full load and now its 88c. Not a big difference but at least under 90c now. Is this all I should get? Just reply to me with a yes or no, no need to type any more details :p I have seen here area 51m owners overclocking it to 5.1Ghz after deliding. How is this possible without hitting 100c ? are these chips some crazy silicon lottery pieces working with -0.500mv undervolt ? :)

Has the dual boot been working well for you? Namely being able to run LAN from the Windows then switching to Linux for wired connection? My machine should be here tomorrow and that is one of the initial things I am wanting to do, at least until the remaining drivers come out for Ubuntu.

5.1 is only possible if you buy a binned chip form silicon lottery that has been short listed for that purpose (but good luck stabilising the PCIe express at those frequencies!). Generally speaking, what you currently have is as good as you can get with the 9900K or KF CPU in this machine. And regarding Z-height being the same, did you actually measure that with a vernier caliper to make sure it's the same? I wouldn't want to increase it even slightly because the power components around the CPU socket might lose good contact if there is even a marginal difference and you haven't applied extra thick pads there. The thermals in this case are bottle necked by the cooler design. I have done all that with my machine after going through a whole bunch of IHS's, replacement heat sinks and pastes, I can tell you that LM is a total waste and an unnecessary danger in case of this machine (it can and will leak out of those foam dams (especially conductonaut) if you treat your laptop like a laptop and carry it around. It is just a matter of time, unless you are willing to put in extra work and seal both surfaces of the foam dam with some liquid electrical tape to the top and the bottom with some kneaded eraser stuffed inside the socket. ;) ) The temperature difference in case of GPU with LM as compared to Kryonaut was around 1.5 degrees which is not worth it. And with Phobya Nanogrease Extreme, I'm getting roughly the same temps as the LM, so you can choose what you want. Being a person who frequently opens/mods his machine, I don't find it useful to take the hassle to install it with LM because it is practically useless in this particular case. And if it dies because of LM, chances are that you'll blow your warranty completely because Dell is being more vigilant in testing for liquid metal on warranty claimed machines these days (based on what I've heard from support guys).

You can run LAN on windows and when you enter linux, you can continue connectivity via wi-fi because both Intel 9260ngw and 9560ngw are recognized and drivers are also available by default. (Both Intel ax200 and ax201 still lack driver support). And yes, my main boot loader is grub which sits on top of the Windows installation and I can choose which OS to run without any problem. I have a triple boot setup right now (installed another linux variant besides ubuntu mate for work purpose) and there is no problem what so ever.

5.1GHz is not possible even on water cooled desktop machines without hitting the 90s so that's a bit of a stretch. Or, you need to spend a ton and get a silicon binned chip. For a machine of this form factor, even 4.9 on all cores is iffy and you WILL hit the 95+ mark! Not worth it in my opinion. 4.8Ghz as a daily driver is the most balanced setting imho.

700 euro's on A cpu just for it being binned is a ton meaning alot

Edit: Looking at the prices SL handles at the moment, you're paying 1/3 price off the whole laptop for a CPU that can runs 5.1 all core. Which is impressive, but also overpriced. Dropping it down to 5.0 Ghz sees a price reduction off almost 40% while performance uplift is not even 10% for that 100Mhz. that's alot.

Ok Guys, here's a little update on my new rig with the Eyesafe display; it seems Dell has quietly (and cunningly I might add) removed Gsync functionality on the new panels if you downgrade the BIOS to below 1.5.4. Their business strategies get worst with every passing day. The new buyers of this system will have to run BIOS 1.5.4 and above if they want Gysnc working perfectly.

On 1.6.2: Gsync works but temp throttle limit is 75C

On 1.5.4: Same results as 1.6.2 but with more throttling and faster temp limits reached

On 1.5.0: Gsync is detected by nvidia drivers but when turned on, all the games starts flashing white lights. It has almost a strobe effect on the screen. When Gync is off, games runs normally. I've tried 3-4 nvidia drivers including Dell and the result is consistent.

On 1.3.2: Gsync is not even detected.

So, I've switched this Chi Mei panel with the AUO I have lying around and running 1.3.2 with full Gycnc functionality and the performance is the best with this BIOS. The colors of the panels are different as well. Chi Mei is brighter but AUO has more vivid colors. The response time also seems better on the AUO than the other one although I don't have any scientific proof on it. I very much prefer the AUO over the Chi Mei overall.

Finally, since I already opened the heart of the beast, I decided to repaste the Dell toothpaste with some Phobya nanogrease and some Artic pads. The results are astounding to be honest. I'm hitting max peak of 76C on the GPU running at 2010Mhz @ 937mV and max peak of 84C on the CPU running at 4.9Ghz on all cores. The temps are consistent while gaming and synthetic benchmarks alike. I'll report back if there's is some change in the near future.

In any case, thanks for reading and hope this helps someone.

TLDR: Dell is using some underhanded tactics to keep people from downgrading to better performing BIOS. I doubt we will see those initial LG and AUO panels on this machine again. Phobya is the BOMB! Highly recommend it!

I think they just included this panel in their arsenal so they had to add support in later versions of bios for it which explains why gsync didn't work on prior versions. But I agree, AUO is the overall best panel out there for this machine so far. Previously I believed that LG had better colors but my mind changed when I saw a calibrated AUO and LG side by side. AUO pops more and is faster.

Loving those cool temps. Though having a 9700K helps alot. But at 4.9GHZ? Seems impressive to me. About how long did it take you to pull it apart for the repaste?

It took me 20-25 minutes to do the entire thing mate, 5 mins extra for cleaning the junk from Dell paste job. But, I've opened this laptop so many times now I've gotten the hang of it. Having one extra Guinea pig laptop helps as well.

630 Euro from where I come from IS a "LOT" mate, you're the 1% of this laptop owners club who can run 5Ghz no problem with acceptable temps, but the same does not apply to everyone here. Enjoy your rig!

Gotta say, finding and scouring through this forum has been massively informative. Props to S.K, Iunlock, and everyone else in here for providing so much knowledge.

I wanted to run my plan of attack with you guys to see if I'm forgetting/leaving something out. So I just received my Area 51m (I9 9900 @ 5.0Ghz | RTX 2080 | 64GB DDR4 2666Mhz | 512GB PCIe M.2 SSD) this past weekend and absolutely loving it. I wasn't really interested in overclocking so I opted for the 9900. I won't be gaming, but mainly video editing and rendering my drone footage. Rendering H.265 videos at max export settings has been a knife through butter. Awesome to watch.

As I've seen, the general consensus is to repaste and repad is a must. I'm more so interested in replacing paste and pads for longevity of the machine with lower temps, than to push it to its limits for as long as I can.

So I'll spending this weekend repasting/repadding:

    Phobya NanoGrease Extreme: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00EUREJZG/ref=ox_sc_act_title_6?smid=A2XKGXPP9Y1BT8&psc=1
    1mm: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00UYTTXSM/ref=ox_sc_act_title_8?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&psc=1
    1.5mm: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00UYTU6Z6/ref=ox_sc_act_title_7?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&psc=1
    2mm: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00ZJS5M60/ref=ox_sc_act_title_4?smid=A2XKGXPP9Y1BT8&psc=1
    3mm: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07CK31PST/ref=ox_sc_act_title_5?smid=AW9QXMLY5QE3F&psc=1

    Relevant and unrelated questions:

    1. Seems like a lot of 2mm is used. Is 100x100 2.0mm going to be enough?
    2. If I have the heatsink on the SSD is it still a good idea to put on the 3mm thermal pad?
    3. If I'm not/can't overclock do I need to worry about undervolting? I figured I'd repaste/repad and check thermals before trying to undervolt. I was in XTU looking around but not comfortable yet to make changes. Can the 9900 undervolt since it's can't overclock? Also would delidding be pointless because of lack of overclocking?
    4. Down the road I'd like to get a RAID of 2x Samsung 970 EVO Plus Series - 2TB and Samsung SSD 860 EVO 4TB. Although it states that Area 51m takes up to 2TB, would there be issues going above that?

Please correct me if I've said or stated anything incorrectly. Looking for any thoughts and opinions on this to make sure I've covered all my bases before moving forward. Thanks!

    Guy's,

I have the rtx 2070 with i7 8700. I have it several month's now and was very satisfied with it's performance and temps. But today i see in HWinfo that drive temperature 2 is 90 degrees celcius.
That doesn't sound good at all, especially since i'm just typing this right now and it still get's that hot! I have the standard 1 Tb hdd plus the 250 gb SSd from Dell. Any ideas on how to fix this? Is it really bad to have these kind of temps?

Thank you in advance for helping me.

Looks like 5Ghhz+ is possible to me. You have more than enough thermal headroom to clock 5Ghz. Using static voltage can even improve your temps on 4.9 looking at the hefty 1.3 you touched. maybe you can run 4.9 @1.2 static., or even less !

Do you see a decrease of your HD performance? If no then its most likely a false reading, no HD will behave normally at this temperature.

That stinks but I enjoy my A51m in black and you will too once it arrives. I just knew I wouldn't care for the white. After seeing a white one in person I was further satisfied that I made the right choice.

I agree with you and I've tried running 5Ghz on all cores, for FS and Timespy, it works like a charm but decompressing big zip files over 4Gbs, I'm hitting occasional 90C in some cores which I don't like to see at all. So, I've decided to run at 49 for now because my ambient temps is 35C+ Dubai and this settings keeps me below 85C for all work loads and I'm very happy with the performance.
In Assassin's Creed Origins for example, I am getting 6fps more on average than a desktop 2080 and a 9900k! So, I'm very happy with these results. It's more than ample for my gaming needs.

Sheesh, so you're achieving 2010Mhz with BIOS 1.3.2.? And which VBios are you on?
how do you get 937mV too if you don't mind me asking? not through AWCC i'm sure..

I actually had a black but it was having major issues. Returned it in May. Ordered this one and somehow I have no idea I missed the color choice when I ordered. Dell rep talked me into trying the white... it’s just not for me. So returning it and reordering again, lol

That's a weird issue, I'm running 1.5.0 with G sync on and Its working just fine.

My only issue I am having ATM is playing on a 4k monitor. When I have the gpu OC on a stable clock my monitor flickers black but when I'm playing on my laptop it works flawless.

I'm using MSI Afterburner to undervolt and overclock the GPU.

    Follow this video:

At 937mV, clocks eventually settles down to ~1980Mhz on 200W vBIOS and 1.3.2 BIOS.

AWCC sucks big time, I just use to control the fans and the lights. That's all.

I covered mine with the tool they provided. So far it’s working well.

Same. Although I haven’t tried going to 1980mhz. I’m sitting at 1920mhz but really good temps.

I asked around on this as well. Most were of the mindset that it didn’t matter too much but that spreading out first was marginally better.

Fair enough. 4.9 is already a 200Mhz OC so if it's stable its better indeed to use that one. Who knows what the future thinks. Your HWinfo screen looked very nice, banging should i sau considering the 35C+ ambient. In the Netherlands it's only 25 to 28 right know with it usually being around 21. So for 35C ambient you have some rock solid numbers.

I just saw that Nvidia wants to apply a firmware update 90.04.3F.00.62/63 to my 2080 and I was wondering if anyone has any experience with it? What is it supposed to do that is better than the previous.

Would you guys happen to know how to bypass the (You are about to flash your BIOS to an older version, which is not allowed, Press the cancel button to stop the flash process), if I can go back... I'm on latest bios and wishing to get back to vbios 200w and bios 1.3.0 or 1.3.2.

Great question. Impatience? I saw two of the four pads were backordered. Gimmie now amazon mentality messing with me. But that doesn't make sense. I don't want to have to keep going back in there if I don't need to. I'm not sure what the rush is. I'll just get the four sizes. Offhand you know if 70x70 2mm will be enough? Thanks!

Thanks! I was also able to find this post from another forum where Mr.Fox replied: Lay down a line of paste on the edge of the die and pull it across the die like spreading peanut butter on bread. If it is not enough to reach the other side, lay down another line of paste on the opposite edge and pull it toward the paste you already spread. If you have any leftover paste on the spatula, wipe it off on the center area of the heat sink contact surface. Then clean off the spatula and put it away for later use.

I have always used the "X method" for square dies and a "line method" for a rectangular die and it has never failed me yet. I used thin X technique for this paste job as nanogrease is just like its name suggests, "a grease" and it spreads out like a dream. The results are posted few pages back.

Only for LM, I use the tool provided for better coverage and better control.

I am not sure, I have not done that yet. @S.K posted that info But I can not seem to find that info now. I ordered 2 of each size of the panasonic ones except the 3.0 mm ones. I only ordered one of those. I am pretty sure that S.K said that one of each was minimum.

I got 51M black today. This thing heats up a room more than my 50" plasma TV! It has winblows 10 pro build 18362.30 (1903/May 2019 update). I really hate it (win10). It is going to be a long haul to get it more usable. It was delivered late in the day so I could not play with it much. I have not connected it to the internet yet until I get through most of Ultra Male's to do list for windows. I did run Haven on it for about 30 minutes and cpu and gpu never got hotter than 74 degrees C. The room was about 85 degrees F, so I guess it did pretty good thermally. At an idle the cpu runs at 40 degrees C and the gpu runs at 37 degrees C.

I will post some internal photos if anyone is interested.

Stock 9900K from Dell (no delid, no repaste):

    https://valid.x86.fr/9brbj6

Hitting 5.1Ghz in games is possible for me, depending on the game, but the cooling can't keep up. AC Cooling opens up 5.1Ghz+ but we run into current limits.

I don't think they removed it. I think the panel is new and support was added in 1.5.4 with 1.5.0 being the "testing period". I doubt they'd go and remove it from an old BIOS.

AUO panel should support G-SYNC on all BIOS versions

My current OC FS: https://www.3dmark.com/fs/19316903 (will work on improving this after school is done lol)

For a high score of 25107, how exactly did you tune your GPU overclock please? I can't seem to get over 22500 so far

You should be getting 25k on stock, what bios and vbois are you running?

No way... I've seen most with owners w/ stock scores about 21-22k. But I'm running 1.5.0 & 200w vBios already

In case anyone is interested the new M.2 ssd heatsinks part number is JV98R, and the screw part number is VJYP9. I do not know the cost as mine shipped free of charge. The old heatsink part 3N3W3 is currently not in stock. My unpopulated extra m.2 slot came with a screw in it.

I get about 22k, a stock 25k would be awesome, but can not be expected from any machine due to silicon lottery.

Btw, I've been running BIOS v1.6.2 and VBIOS 1.0.0.5 for a couple of days now with no major downs in benchmarks and no noticable degrade in gaming performance.

Granted, decent temps keeps throttling to a minimal I guess.

Total score of 22k at stock is consistent for these machine, but I think he is talking about 25k graphics score only. If your graphics score is 22k, then something is off.

Which CPU do you have? CPU score affects overall score as well.

For an overall score of 25k I needed to OC my 2080 by +150 Core & +300 on memory. Also had to OC CPU to 5Ghz on all cores.

1: 100x100x2mm is going to be fine but it also depends upon how supple the pads are that you are using in those places. Panasonic pads are soft enough that I can cram them wherever I want indiscriminately and they squish up to the required thickness automatically but some of the harder pads won't do it, so you have to be watchful (especially around the CPU) because if your 2mm pads are not soft enough, they might not compress well and some of the components might not get good contact (partly the reason I recommend Panasonic pads).
2: If you have the heat sink on SSDs from factory, it should have it's own thermal pad on it already so you don't need to put anything extra on top.
3: Undervolting always helps reduce the temperatures further and helps the CPU to hold boost clocks for longer under load. So imo it's a good idea to test it out. There is nothing to lose if you unlock more horsepower without spending any money.
4: I haven't tried anything higher than 2tb on NVMe slots so cannot say for sure, but I don't think there should be a problem if the installed drive follows the NVMe protocol. I do have a 4TB sata ssd however (the 860 evo) as my main storage drive, which also, as per Dell, isn't fully compatible with the machine but that sounds silly. Apparently, whatever is not tested by Dell on this machine, is "not fully compatible" so take those comments with a grain of salt and enjoy whichever drive you want to put in there as long as it is compliant with the required protocol.

This paste is VERY thick and any other method except spread will give you trouble on this machine (not a lot of mounting pressure to press it out). Talking from experience here.

In this case you have to make an exception because this paste doesn't spread well due to it's chewing-gum like viscosity. If you put a dot or an X, chances are that it won't fully compress (unless you have very high mounting pressure which isn't the case in this machine) and you might end up with higher temps. I also use the pea or x method usually but in this case, that didn't work that well so I had to spread it out in a VERY thin layer.

Run NFS Payback and see how high the temps go. That game, at max settings, is a certified CPU hog! My oh my does that thing consume CPU resources! This game has replaced my CPU stability tests and I know my CPU clocks are stable if they can survive half an hour of gaming on this game. :D
