I decided to update and take a look for myself per my individual usage and requirements of my laptop.

I was running Warzone with a +100 Core and +300 Mem overclock after the update, and my CPU set to throttle down to keep it under 90C. I was getting around 110-115 FPS in 1440p with DLSS on Quality. A welcomed accomplishment, and with Nvidia filter overlay on. I am sure if I remove them and edit the visual settings under the Nvidia control panel I could get that to 130-135 FPS. I can live with that, as I am sure we can pressure Dell into increasing the power on the GPU, can't we? Isn't the MaxP variant of the 3070 supposed to be 125-140w?

The night didn't go as smoothly as that though. After about 30 mins or so of gaming my FPS tanked to 30, like it was capped at 30, and my game was extremely laggy. I checked AWCC and it said my GPU was at 99% usage. Not sure how, as I have yet to see that running Warzone, and I was very confused by this. I still haven't figured out what the culprit was.

I'm stumped fellas. I just fired up Warzone on break, and 30fps, GPU usage at 99% in 3 mins. For the more tech savvy: What is happening?

Check your monitor settings. I dont know why but display settings shows 2 monitors sometimes. Pick the one that actually shows resolution. It fixed my issues as well. It will peg at 30 or 60 fps sometimes and it seems to be tied to that

This is on the internal screen. I don't know what the deal is.

Yeah, I popped in and saw 2 displays, it was showing #1 as internal and my active display as #2/wired, when it was the internal being used, and not connected to any external monitors. I was clicking around options, and it updated to showing just an active internal display at 1440p. I technically didn't even change anything. Odd. Anyways, it bumped like 10 FPS. LOL. This laptop is such a f****** headache.

It did not. Then a windows update seemed to clear it out, but after an hour of playing it returned. In game my GPU was clocking 480-500mhz at 99% usage and 30 FPS again. Fun times.

Why you think Dell will make the budget models perform so much better than their brand new x15 ?

Be happy the 3070 in the m15 Ryzen model got some better treatment than the 3070 GPU in the new x15 :D

I'm on r4 bios now, no extra stuttering it freezing beyond what i had on official vbios. On official bios, switching from auto to gpu results in screen freeze half the time, same on r4 bios.

He means with Dynamic Boost. But we all know DB straight up stinks as it only works in situations where the cpu uses so little power that the gpu can pull some more power. I’ve personally been trying my best to only mention laptops tsp without it since it so rarely even kicks in. Marketing gimmick to make people think they’re getting more than they are.

Is anybody having sleep/standby issues after vbios update? Laptop won't goto sleep now, sometimes the keyboard stays on, the fans stay on. Can somebody who's updated test? Turn your fans on then trying sleeping

Alright, my update since they released the bios upgrade. I'm content with where things ended up. Wish they didn't pull this kind of crap, but aside from the very mediocre thermals, which I can cope with, the performance has actually hit closer to what I expected it to be out-of-box. I will not be returning, and I will eventually do a re-paste and some minor overclocking. [IMG]

Okay, I have been doing this myself. I have had one major issue in my testing over the weeks where a couple times it's like the thing just never even kicks in properly. I'm not sure if it's a software bug or what in certain games. However, that's a major issue obviously. I had to turn off game and reset profile to get it to kick in for some reason. However, most of the time it works really well.

Just to confirm, flashing back 4608 original vbios fixes the sleep issue. There updated vbios is bugged and will not sleep. Confirmed by reflashing twice, it's happened both times and cleared up both times.

Well I decided to order the 3070 with QHD and mechanical keyboard. I don't know how much of an improvement it will be over my Legion 7i with RTX 2080 Super Max-Q but the upgrade to the CPU should make it worth it. The GPU is probably only about a 15% increase (until they fix the vbios) but the screen will be nice. I just hope it gets as bright cuz 500 nits on the Lenovo is awesome.
Biggest thing I'm bummed about is going to a larger power brick, losing a USB Type-C (thunderbolt), and the biggest thing, losing the numpad... I was waiting for the X17 but with that not even having a numpad (really?!) and no QHD option, I had no interest in it whatsoever.
I will see how it is when I get it but I figure there is always 30 days to determine if I will keep it or not.

It definitely looks amazing but the thing is, if looking at current pricing for the 5 Pro is any indication, it's going to be ridiculous (3070 best deal is $2441 CAD after taxes and rakuten) plus it is sold out currently. Same thing pretty well for the M15 R5? $2k CAD. Tack on about $400 for the Legion 7 when it releases and no way, too much. Maybe if there is a Black Friday deal I'll get it and sell the M15 R5 but that's a big "if". As it stands, the price was definitely right for the components I wanted.

Aaaaah ok. I was just curious since Lenovo seems to be hitting it out of the park why go to another brand?

Oh and the R5 does not have a 500 nit screen. That’s exclusive to Lenovo for some reason. I wish I knew if they somehow do that themselves or do they actually have special panels made for there machines? Would be nice to see your screen when you’re outside.

Ya but at least it is 400 and measured is actually 420 nits so not bad at all.
Even the Lenovo 500 nit panel actually measures 468 nits at its brightest level (notebookcheck) so it shouldn't be too much of a difference.

Panel lottery plays a role. Sometimes it's brighter than spec and sometimes lower. My 1080P 360hz panel in my scar 17 is rated for 300 nits but my tool measures it at 339 nits. I had a GE76 rated for 300 nits as well and brightest I could get it was 271 nits, which is why I returned it.

Has anyone had any latency or input issues when gaming on the QHD? Also, I no longer have access to my trackpad from time to time. It just randomly gets disabled, and I have to enable it in devices. LOL oh Alienware <3

Out of interest (asking for a friend) where would I find the R4 bios and instructions on how to use?

btw; received this model recently, and it is epic. Only a few software issues to begin with, and that is part of the Dell experience.

Here is an update video comparing the difference of before and after the bios update by Jarrod. In games it seems like nothing really changed. Which is weird.

A summary from Notebookcheck me. Less is sometimes more, LOOL
    [IMG]

The Alienware m15 R5 receives more CUDA cores with an update, but sometimes poorer performance notebookcheck.net | today

I expect Dell rushed this firmware update and didn't test it properly. Or they are afraid the same 3070 graphics card in the x15 will perform much worse due lower TGP and tuned for lower performance in the budget model. Not nice if the High end model from Dell Alienware perform worse than the budget models.

At this point anyone looking for a good 3070 laptop should just snatch a legion 5 pro and call it a day.

I had gotten such a good deal on the Alienware that it would still be about $400 more for the Legion 5 Pro in Canada... Would I prefer it? Probably; but that's not an insignificant difference.

I agree. It poses a 20% difference when the rest are equal (3070 and qHD display) but I would much rather have the Lenovo based on performance, ports, and numpad!
However that price... Definitely cannot justify that jump. Plus, the Alienware looks better (subjective) lol

IMO they are gimping vs Intel model. I wonder if Intel would stoop to such levels, of course, they would. I flashed R4 bios and viola GPU performs in top 3070's.

Form factor that is designed to have lower TDP. The m15 Intel and M15 Ryzen are the same chassis. So why is AMD version have less power. Makes no sense

If Dell release 3070 in m15 R6 with Tiger-lake it will be with equal castrated graphics TGP. They can’t throw out the new high end line as x series with lower Gpu performance. It’s what it is and how Dell want it to be. It’s for a reason they skipped Vapor chamber cooling in the R5 and R6 m15 series. This to show the X series in better lights.

um the x series performs worse what are you talking about? Nm misunderstood what you said. I have watched the temps they are fine performance is good. They just did not put love into this one. It has more headroom on the GPU this is a fact.
