Well they better send out free ones to anyone that bought one with it. That’s just crazy they did that.

No idea on that one, but your right, they should. I doubt it was done intentionally...likely an oversight, but either way, people that bought one of these should absolutely be entitled to the parts to add in a second SSD.

Well looks like I spent 30 bucks for nothing. Still these jerks should send an email or something.

On another note the m15 r4 3070 vbios is working great in the R5. I'm able to get a +175 core +375mem overclock and it does pretty well. Still under-performing where it should be. It's about on par with a 1080 ti now but with ray tracing which is cool I guess?

You can re-use it if you have to ask for a replacement :)

I feel like I made a mistake by ordering this laptop. On the MobileTechReview video, it looked like the video card was hitting 85-90C and only pulling 90-95 watts while playing Tomb Raider.

Can anyone confirm that the 3060 in this performs at 115W performance levels? If not, I will be returning this and waiting for a good deal on the M15 R4 or another laptop with cooling that allows the hardware to perform at 100%.

It seems like the 3070 would be an especially poor choice for this laptop given the cooling barely seems adequate for a 3060.

I have the 5900hx and 3070 qhd, gpu temps stay under 85 during stress, 75 or so during gaming. You need to set up a nice fan profile on awcc to control temps. Really people are just on the fud train for this laptop. Also the cherry keys are the best I've ever used on a laptop

I appreciate the reply and find it reassuring. I'll definitely give the laptop a chance, but it will need to be good to replace my current desktop and laptop setup. Have you checked Rivatuner to see how many watts you're pulling? I am concerned after seeing Lisa's MobileTechReview video. On her review of the R4, her Rivatuner shows the 3070 pulling 125-140 watts at lower temps. I think the R5 looks much better and the CPU runs circles around the 10870H, but it also appears to have the same motherboard and maybe even the same cooling as the much cheaper Dell G15 with the 5800H.

    R5 3060 - 86C, 95W

    R4 3070 - 73C, 140W

My 3070 runs at 135w to 140w. Before liquid metal it would get into the 80s with balanced profile. Now it barely breaks 70c with a more aggressive fan profile. The cherry keyboard is the best I've ever used. You get 30 days to return without issue. You should just try it out. If it's not what you want then return it. Seems simple.

The m17 has better cooling comparing to the m15, but also the m15 R4 still has VC, so I think will be a bit better thermals than the m15 R5. I also hesitating a lot to waiting for the 11.gen intel version (m15 R6) but I let go of this thing. To much compromize for me and will never get a nice temperature with the "new" regular heatsink. So I'll keep my Clevo and will get an m15 R3 / R4. For me better port selection, a bit better cooling and I do not need the actual best benchmark results from the cpu side :)

What with the AW m15 R6 with Tiger lake? Will it be same mess? You say newer models.... Will this mean the X series? Or will those also lack the M.2 standoffs? They are already in production for the release. I doubt Dell change so fast.

The Premium extended warranty is now more important than ever. If you don't pay for it and the obligatory warranty roll out you'll have an UNREPAIRABLE laptop with Dell's parts policy as bro @Normimb Nuff said.

I should have worded it better. Newer M15R5's will include the bracket, but I don't know when exactly that will start, just that it will. I have no idea what the newer R6 or X series will use or if they will require a bracket. The R6 has the same design as the R5, so presumably the same bracket will be needed. One would hope, as it has not launched yet, that they can still alter that one to include the bracket. We will probably know more about the X series until someone gets a look inside.

Hope so. Because this isn't good enough (Dell CS stated the only way they would sent me the mounting hardware is after I bought a dell M.2) Re: m15 R5 Ryzen, SSD thermal shield. In the post below some stated theat Dell have started putting this in the M15 R6.

Dell agreed yesterday to send me the SSD brackets free of charge. Support request was sent yesterday and they replied within a couple of hours saying no problem and asking what size SSD I was going to use and for my shipping address. Rep said the reason it isn't included as standard is because of the two different size of SSD supported (who can say if this is true). This was from UK support.

You don't need one of the two different heat shields to be able to mount the ssd. You need the SSD assembly bracket + screw.

Hey guys that own an r5 i have a question. Do you get random hangs that sometimes cause a reboot? Or the occasional stutter? I almost immediately flashed my vbios when i got my laptop so i am wondering if it might be causing some instability. I may revert back to stock and try it for a week. Thanks for any input.

Deep down you knew the answer already:there shoild be zero hangs, and no stutter that's not caused by some poor asset streaming or excessive overall system load.

The advanced Optimus sometimes seems to be the cause of this. Like when it’s switching between the dGPU and igpu and it seems to cause a split second of responsiveness in the system.

I have had it set to dgpu everytime its happened. It may be the gpu flash given that no one else seems to be encountering it. I'll flash back and see if that has an effect. I'll report back

That does seem to indicate it’s the flashes bios. The only other thing I would’ve suggested is try turn off dynamic boost. Since the system can originally run at 125w in the right situations that would just make it run at the max gpu wattage before the flash. Unless you already tried that? But Atleast we’ll know once you go back to the stock bios.

How in the world can 4608 CUDA cores be detected? That's actually less than a desktop RTX 3060 Ti (4864).
I know some people said in that Reddit thread it could be a special order, but this would be incredibly strange as a special order for it to have 4 less GPU clusters.

How in the hell does it have more ROPs than the regular 3070 mobile? It seems Dell has mastered the art of altering specs quite well, at least they achieved something :D

So I flashed back to stock cause I was having rare hanging issues under m15 r4 vbios, I decided to check my 3070 under stock bios and under the r4 bios.

it seems to be vbios tomfoolery. At least it's not a hardware issue. Dell sure loves to get themselves into messes.

It could be that the hardware itself is lower performing silicon and the vbios just cuts it down to allow for more usable cards but that hasn't been my experience with the m15 r4 vbios. It performs on par with that 3070 and doesn't really have performance issues. It just causes the rare and random system hang. Which may be a power issue. My battery drains under the 140w vbios so i wonder if it needs a bit more juice.

Dell change the power settings values in EC. And they have used battery boost since the first gen BGA in 2015. Adopted by MSI @Falkentyne :notworthy:xpected.
As expected. Tragic. The fun part.... All too many won't be able to catch the flaws.

    Another..... great find Bro.@papusan

Honestly, before today i never bothered to checked my Cuda Cores in GPU-Z. I was mostly using this software to save my V-bios and check temperature limit. Now i will be doing this on a regular basic.

PS. I saw Dell reducing Maximum temperature limit with the help of GPU-Z on a bios update. Now it's another new low from Dell.

This is the launch stream of the m15 r6 and x series laptops. If you scroll to 22:50 he mentions that later this year an update will be released to increase the wattage on the gpu on the m15 r6.

So maybe both the r5 and r6 gpu’s have been gimped at release for whatever reason, causing these figures to be lower than they should be.

Probably to show the new thin X series models in a better light. Not nice if the new high end models perform worse than the old cheaper and thicker chassis. The new has to show awesome to sell http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...e-and-discussion.835993/page-14#post-11098335
