Alienware M15R4 Battery Issue When Gaming dell.com/support

HaloGod2012 Notebook Virtuoso
Latest nvidia drivers today killed my system. Any OC at all causes a black screen on the desktop or any application. Random black screens even without an OC but not as frequent. Rolling back now to the Dell video drivers. Thanks Nvidia. Stay away from these.
Update: rolling back fixed all issues and I can overclock again. The new drivers today appear to be fine at first but on your next reboot, the black screens begin. I would advise we all stay away from this driver as it has done it on my m17 R4 and my 3090 desktop.Last edited: Apr 29, 2021 -

Does anyone know why installing a driver directly from nvidia errors out saying no compatible hardware, but doing it through GeForce experience works? I want to use the last GeForce driver but it won't install, and experience only gives you the latest broken driver.

EDIT: Even this 3070 is pretty pathetic. My G15 3070 run is just a hundred points lower and that's a 100W TGP https://www.3dmark.com/spy/19019839c69k likes this. -

What were your core/mem +?

I've been playing around as well with my new M15 R4 (144 Hz screen, 3070, 16 GB memory). Overall this is a great device!
I've particularly taken the challenge to:
- Optimize battery life: get as much battery life as possible out of the machine. And yes, I know it is a gaming device, but I still think that a laptop with Optimus (144 Hz screen) and an 85 Wh battery should be able to manage more than 2 hours. Out of the box, even with Optimus, it only manages about 2.5 - 3 hours, which is abysmal. After some tuning and undervolting in ThrottleStop (key one seems to be "Disable Turbo"), I managed to get 6-7 hours out of it. For normal use (e.g. browsing), the laptop is still very snappy. In HWInfo, I can also see that the power draw is between 12 and 16 Watts, so that's pretty good. I'm perfectly happy with this!
- Experiment with mining: the 3070 is a very capable card for Ethereum mining. However, it's quite an expensive laptop to do mining with, but as an experiment I tried to see what I could get out of this machine. Result is that I can get it to run stable at about 65 MH/second mining Ethereum. Stable means it's running for about two hours, so let's see if it also runs a day or more. Settings I used are all in Afterburner: overclock of Memory with 1500 Mhz (so running at 8500) and in the Voltage/Frequency curve, I locked the voltage at 650 mV with a frequency of 875 Mhz. Total power draw of the GPU is about 110 Watts (in HWInfo) and in total for the whole machine about 120 Watts. GPU temperatures are stable at ~60 degree Celcius and GPU hot spot temperatures are a maximum of 66 degree Celcius, which should be quite acceptable and sustainable. Quite impressed so far, since this is in line with what I read from desktop 3070 cards! With electricity costs in my country and current Ethereum prices (which are insane), this should generate about 6$ per day.
Does anybody have any experiences with mining on an M15 R4?c69k, seanwee and chewbakaats58 like this. -

Cool! I also ordered a cooling pad (Cooler Master U3 plus) because I fully agree the fans shouldn't run at 70% 24/7. I noticed it already helps a lot to lift the laptop a bit - temperature drops with 3-4 degrees just by doing that.
I do have some issues with the miner running stable. I let it run overnight and, although it was somehow still running (using Ethermine and it was still reporting that it was running), the screen didn't come back on, so had to do a hard reset. Which mining software are you using? And at what settings did you set your videocard?
-
I mine with the screen open I don't want it to get to hot with it close. Also make sure to turn hibernation off and anything like. I keep the laptop in my garage haha. I have my gaming computer mine when am not gaming with it. The laptop I install google remote desktop so I can log into it from within the house if needed be.Last edited: May 2, 2021dreamtheater03 likes this. -
Hey Everyone! Could any of you guys upload your M15 R4's 3070 VBIOS?
I've been trying to get my 2021 Razer vbios flashed to a higher wattage, while I usually have great success getting the 100-115w vbioses to work great, (been on them for about a month) it breaks both USB c outputs. I figured trying a vbios that has an actual thunderbolt usb c port might work better? -

Thanks for the info! I'm overclocking memory with 1500 and it ran stable for more than a day, but is now crashing occasionally again. Will reduce it to check if that's the culprit.
The fans in the cooling pad don't seem to make a significant difference, max 0.5 degrees Celsius.

Returned the m17 R4 3080 model. It's just not worth the price increase over the 3070. Outside of benchmarks the framerate isn't a noticeable difference.

Does the Alienware m15 R4 M.2 Interface PCIe Gen 4.0 or Gen 3.0 ?

Only Gen 3 I have Gen 4's in it and they only run at 3 sadly.

New x series coming out May 11. Expect Tiger Lake H with full wattage GPUs. Hopefully they keep the upgradeable RAM and the better screen options from r5. -

I can't overclock my 3070 in my M17 R4 even 20mhz over stock without full crashes and reboots. Has anyone else here experienced this? If it's crashing completely at just 20mhz over stock, I'm thinking it's probably no good even at stock settings.

Is it worth Repasting with LM? is it worth repadding with higher tier pads (16w/mk)? Whats the highest the 10870H hits in speed? this is probably for resale purpose as i was adviced to sell ASAP! lol i havent even got in my hands yet. Anybody tried mining mine is comin with a 3080 whats the mh rate? Overclock on memory and core? I appreciate all your feedback on these topics. I may keep it for mining chia (6TB SSD Space) and ethereum.

@Papusan I don't know what to make of this -
The thin sickness trend contnue. They are forced to use Quad fans now, probably because two thinner fans compared to what you find in it's predecessor would be too weak. And with Liquid metal you can't improve the cooling anymore on the Alienwares. Cheaper with Gallium thermal interface than make a thicker and big boy cooling.
Oh I forgot. You can't put in a full size cooling in an thin Apple Book either. You trade the cooling for thinnes.
Alienware teases brand-new X-series compact gaming laptops with innovative quad fan cooling system and Gallium Silicone interface material
From what we can see in the teaser images, the X17 seems a bit thinner than the Alienware m17 models. The screen aspect ratio is most likely 16:9 and the ports on the back include a Thunderbolt 4 connector, a USB-C with DP capabilities, 2x USB-A, HDMI and mini-DP video outputs, a GbE jack and a miniSD card reader.
Dell's main competitor is stil Razer and their new thinner Joke-books.
The ultra-thin Razer Blade 15 is now available with Tiger Lake-H, GeForce RTX 3080 and 4K OLED display
The Razer Blade 15 has received an upgrade, the new model is not only thinner than its own predecessor, according to Razer it is the thinnest gaming notebook in the world that is equipped with Nvidia GeForce RTX graphics chips.
Alienware is also taking the opportunity to tease an upcoming product, the new X-Series line focused on thinness above all else. The X-series will use Intel's 11th Gen Core processor and Nvidia RTX 30-series graphics.

@Papusan, what can we expect with Tiger Lake H45 series? Is there any documentation which states how much power it needs to draw on full load in order to hit max turbo? Like any info on PL2 or something?

Scenarios like our Cinebench benchmark will push all of the cores on that chip to 4.5GHz, consequently pushing up the power consumption to as high as 135 watts, according to Ryan Shrout, Intel’s performance guru.
