Yeah if AW announced a 1080 version then that would mean no 2080 anytime soon. They wouldn't release a whole new "high-end" model with 2080 coming out right after.

I read into the tweet Notebookcheck referenced during my break and the author might have jumped the gun.

Frank Azor does say there is an 80 version coming but doesn't say its a 1080 in his tweet.

Didn't bother to look into it when I first posted because I've always thought of Notebookcheck as a good source.

Going to have to wait for CES to see exactly what 80 card it is.

yeah no way the m15 will get a 2080, even maxq is skeptical. I bet the maxq tdp will be similar to a laptop 1080 (non maxq).

Since the m15 is getting a XX80 card next year, makes me wonder.

If the XX80 card is MAX-Q then I wonder if they'll make the XX70 card the full performance version.

If I remember correctly, the current m15 doesn't use vapor chamber cooling yet?

yall do realize the 2080 is equivalent to the 1080ti. They will not be able to put a max-q variant of that into a thin and while. The best you will get in a laptop is a 1080 max q or a 2070 max q.

a 2070 is 1080 tdp. it is not going to do well in this chassis vapor chamber or not.

If they can prove us wrong, hats off then.

A 17 R5 already struggles with the CPU when the GPU is on full power, let alone in the m15. The 17 is a gaming laptop, if that machine already overheats the CPU, I pray to the hands of the people using the 1080 in a m15. It would probably be hotter than 55C+...

You're all correct. Just bear in mind that whatever nvidia want to name their mobile variant(s) as 2070 and 2080. However they choose name the specific SKUs, and all other major aspects, including clocks, if it includes RTX or not, and having more or less cuda cores. It's is all entirely up to nvidia. And how they arbitrarily decide to label that SKU. There is nothing at all which requires nvidia to use the same system / patterns as in the previous generation. And in fact, as some of you have realized that might be rather foolish. Anyhow.

The other side of the equation here is whether the m15 can dissipate enough heat on the GPU side. Well initially I thought it does a good job of that, with relatively low temps (maxing out at 72C is pretty good going for a laptop). However what I forgot about was that the combined stress test was running furmark. So it may have been detected by the nvidia driver [as furmark] and specifically gimped for that reason alone. However the same guy still already put up that other video, for a few specific games... Didn't bother to check and see on that one.

    WOW!

Nice Work Dell, my EDD is on the 14th and I just got this email today from my sales rep:

We regret to inform you that your order for the laptop “ Alienware M15”, went on hold due to some internal sku issue regarding the SSD hard drive. Hence we need to cancel and reprocess this order for the same laptop which has been updated.

Kindly provide your best contact number so that I can call you back at the earliest and reprocess your order.

I have been waiting already 2 weeks (Ordered on the 25th of October) I am beyond pissed now, I am thinking of just canceling the order and ordering something else.

Sorry to hear that! I would be very frustrated. I ordered late the night of the 25th and my EDD has stayed at 11/21. If they truly can't do anything but put you at the back of the queue, I would insist on getting some kind of additional discount or threaten to just cancel the order (depending on whether that is an option for you). I think you might have enough leverage to justify getting a break (unless they can keep the original EDD).

It does not look like they can do much except put me in the back of the line. I am mulling on canceling my order and getting something else.

The local Microcenter near me has a bunch of open box Powerspec 1710 laptops for under 1,000. Might just end up getting that since its just a secondary computer. I already blasted Frank Azor on twitter about this and the fact that the sales team should have fixed this issue weeks ago.

It looks like I spoke too soon. They just emailed me with a description to the same effect, that I need to re-order. Given all of my preferences, there really isn't another option for me that checks the right boxes, so I need to stick with the m15.

I called and they said the part number for my SSD (also a 512 GB) and my warranty were invalid (some kind of technical/system issue) and the only way to address it was to cancel and re-order. They added express delivery for no charge and I believe some other discount was applied because the total is almost $90 less. My EDD is now 11/27 (they said 11/25-11/27 on the phone, but the system says 11/27). 6 days later is not the end of the world and the phone call took like 5 minutes. I feel like they compensated me enough to make up for the mistake.

On the phone with them now. They're replacing my order as well. Same issue, 512 SSD.

So far, they haven't offered any incentives yet. But they already discounted it on the last glitch so not expecting much if anything for this one.

Make sure your new order was correct. I had a bad feeling after talking to him, but was out and about and couldn't check it until just now. Instead of the 144hz and 90wh, the new order has the 60hz and 60wh. I have emailed the rep, but do not have confidence I will get an email back on that. I included all other email addresses I've collected during this process. Also going to tweet AW Support. Unfortunately, I will be traveling for the next four days so do not have the bandwidth to sit on the phone and work on this.

Starting to get frustrated at this point.

Oh no way, sorry to hear that guys. I have ordered a few dell systems over the years and have had this sort of thing happen to me a few times. Dell really seem quite inept at times. Guess I was really lucky ordering the 256gb (we didn't have an option for 512gb in the UK when I ordered on the 25th)

I don't blame you. That is definitely frustrating. I was worried about that with mine, so I checked once the new order confirmation came through and they got the same specs as what I had originally ordered. I hope they get it sorted out for you. While I could live with 60Hz (that's what I'm doing now), 60W battery would be a non-starter for me.

    FYI...

Anyone who orders with the 512GB SSD will have issues. I had my order re-done and yet again there is an issue with the order just like before. I am probably going to just cancel this out and get something else now.

Are the chassis design and size the same for smaller and higher Wh battery? If so, get the smaller one and upgrade it yourself from Dell store for 90Wh battery.

I think that is a load of crap if I have to do that to make sure my order goes through. If they cant fix this for me today I am just going to cancel it and order something else. If anyone wants a super sweet deal on a $300 gift card let me know. Not going to buy another dell until they can fix their crappy ordering service.

Force hardware (ssd) manufacturers to accept lowest possible income won't always succed. Hence will Dell and other pc builders try to hold lowest possible inventory on some hardware. This is business as usual. They will anyhow try to sell on you hardware they normally have in stock. Many accept it (accept what they can offer even it's junk) and hence there isn't a reason to change their practice.

I always get 3-4 years of warranty. Dell is good about honoring the warranty and working with you to replace parts as needed so you will get value. Also helps with resale down the road as long as still under warranty as it is much less risk to the new buyer. Adding warranty after purchase is VERY expensive so you want to get as much as you can up front.

Thanks. I've always bought Dell laptop and I've had good experience with their warranty, but the last time I only got a year. I didn't know it was way more expensive to add to it later, so I'll get a longer warranty up front.

I used an M3800 and liked it a lot. I gave it to my mom (who destroys computers :( ) and upgraded to my Blade in 2015. My mom still has the M3800 but it is on it's last legs. It was pristine when I gave it to her. I actually still have a spare larger battery for it if you want to buy one :) Mom wanted to have a 2.5" drive in hers.

That sounds like my mom. Lol. I'll send you a PM to keep the thread on track.

Man, I've had the laptop in my sig since 2006. I got out of the laptop game for a long time, talking myself out of great units. Now this m15 has piqued my interest and I'm talking myself out of the price for this too.
