Can you post some images about the lines? Im still stuck on which panel to get. Anyone here got the 120hz that could give a review if possible with a vid. The IPS panel so far from youtube vids seem okay. Just dont want to make a decision especially knowing that it would take weeks to get the unit only to return it for some factory defect.

QHD panel is awesome. The colors are not that bad and can be calibrated. The response time is so low that there is almost zero motion blur of any kind.
However there are lines, call them scan lines, pixel inversion, something; they are there. uggg.
I have some pics I can post but have no videos. Still trying to decide if I want to return this and get the FHD panel.
However again aside from the lines, the panel is perfect so it kinda sucks. :(

Please post some close up pictures from the horizontal lines... Are they visible in all colors or mostly on gray ? They should offer at least g-sync with 100hz on the FHD option like MSI. If the scanlines are too bad like some people say I will not buy the laptop and I am going to wait if anything comes later with a better 2K screen.

Ya im pretty bummed. I am now considering the FHD again but bummed to lose Gsync and 5ms. 120hz is a bummer too but Gsync and 5ms is a huge deal. Still trying to decide but each time I sit and game on the QHD I always notice it, not just because I know they are there but because I have looked at all of these things for months or even years before.
They are most visable in solid colors. I can see them in all solid colors. However they may not be visible per say in graphics or gaming etc.. however because they are still there graphics and pictures look different then on a screen where they do not exist. They make things (especially solid colors) look like they have a texture to them that is not there.
For exampel scroll bars on windows, buttons on websites.

Thatts what im worried about. Gsync or the lines. Other manufacturers offer Gsync without any problem or at least like these. Love the brand but theyre not making it easy for us and at a price over 2k. Please do post the pics. Will have to decide soon if i should settle for another laptop or wait till they improve it.

If only they offered 1080p or 4K 60Hz with g-sync, it would be awesome

    @iunlock god damn, I wonder what the 1080 will bench stock. I guess it'll be around 17 000 - 17 500
    But 16250 is beast!

Edit: Ok I checked some 3d benchmarks.. will be around 19 000..

For a GTX 1070 Notebook card, not bad....not bad at all. That's stock GTX 1080 territory.

I have a tall order for when I get my AW GTX 1080 hopefully sometime this month as the numbers that I need to reach are pretty high. :)

This is my personal best with the GTX 1080, but this is with the 6700K.

@iunlock How do you raise your graphics scores such high for the 1070? Are u using MSI Afterburner and what settings are you using? After repaste I still don't get above 200/200mhz in MSI Afterburner. Do I miss something?

What did you use to paste? It's likely that you're hitting some kind of thermal throttling? The Pascal chips are very sensitive so it's important that you use the best paste as you can to provide your chips maximum cooling potential. This is why a lot of us recommend Liquid Metal as the go to choice. I use AB as well. Also, remember not all silicon are created equal so you'll have to tune it to find the sweet spot. It's not a one size fits all deal with either the CPU or GPU.

    Best of luck!

@iunlock I have used the Grizzly Liquid Metal paste. For CPU I had a massive temp drop but for the GPU they are nearly the same as previously to be honest as far as i remember :D

GPU is 66-70°C under full load.

@iunlock Impressive results on the GTX 1070, has to feel good to take the #1 spot on all those benchmarks XD

Oh by the way, it seems like the Alienware.com website is down. A long shot but I hope they are updating it. Updating with the GTX 1080 pre orders.
(even though I probably have to wait weeks before it reaches my country, it would be nice to see the possible configurations for the GTX 1080)

Hit FN-F7 to make the Nvidia GPU the only system GPU. Not sure that this "disables" optimus but I know it takes the Intel iGPU out of the equation...

I asked to AlienwareTech on twitter about the horizontal lines issue on the 120hz and if they are thinking on a solution and they answered that nobody reported that problem. I don' t know if it is true but if the owners of this screen start to report the issue maybe something could change.

The Alienware's fault for not offering more Gsync options but not their options for the current state of things with panels.
For example, the QHD panel is the same on msi and Clevo, the lines issue is present. Also Clevo has 1080p Gsync but the 120hz / 5ms 1080p panel put in the wild is not certified Gsync by nvidia do even Clevo doesn't have that. So AW has to choose the best options based on a lot of other company's decisions as well.

Please point out to them that this issue is also happening on Clevos and MSI, it simply is the way the panel is made. We need more Gsync/5ms panel options, if they exist.

Done! There should be a 120hz FHD screen on some 17 inches laptop. However I suggest to owners of the 120hz qhd to complain to Alienware. Imho this issue is unacceptable on this kind of laptop.

Im not reading that MSI is having this issue with their 120hz panel. Maybe not yet anyway. Im still halfway though of reading all the comments on the Gt73VR model. Most problems i read we're on shady driver update. I'll wait until the end of the month when AW announces their full lineup. Would probably even get the 1080 if they figure things out with their panel.

Yes, they have fixed the OC Levels in BIOS you can now run OC level 3. I'm still testing but first try OC3 worked well with 65°C Max in XTU bench (repasted with LM)

I'm not sure what you mean. Any small research shows the panel is made this way. Some people can't tell, but I have 20/10 eyesight, the slightest imperfections really bother me.

Update: The replacement laptop is in production, and they threw in a 256gb SSD

So trying to pick out a new gaming notebook. We have a few of ASUS ROG 17" that we like with few quibbles. But the new 752 with 10XX line, is more pricey than in the past. And the lower end GL702 looks to be too hot for lap use when actually gaming.

So, can the AW 17 1060/1070 be used while gaming on your lap? It seems hard to find reviews yet that show "bottom of the chassis" temps. :p Also, is it relatively quiet?

Did you go for another screen option as the replacement?, did they offer money back if you went 1080p or charge you more if u went 4k?

    No it will not.

Acording to recent reviews ALL current AWs needs repasting. Doesnt matter where you buy it.

I've got two 512gb 950 Pro m.2 drives coming in this week to be set up in RAID 0 as my primary boot drive. I've configured RAID systems hundreds of times but never with an m.2 system. I seem to recall reading that there are 3 total m.2 slots internally and that two were of certain I/O speed and the third was somehow different but not sure.

I'm assuming the two m.2 drives go in slot 1 and slot 2? Oddly, I think the cheapo 128gb that this until came with is in the slot 3 position for some reason ...

Just curious ... but pretty sure 1 and 2 slots is where the RAID drives need to be..

    Don't bother buying extra heatsinks it's un-needed.
Both IC diamond 7 and Gelid extreme are really good. the Gelid is slightly more efficient but is less durable than the IC diamond 7, both are really appreciated by the gaming laptop community.

Alright, in an entirely unscientific test here is a picture that shows Keithan Rogers youtube video on the left, with a picture of my screen taken from my Galaxy Note 4 on the right. I tried to go to the same website he went to, but maybe we were in different browsers because things look slightly different. But, I think it's enough to see that the banding/lines on my notebook are almost non-existant. I swear I thought I saw them for a time when I first got the notebook, but now I don't. To me the display looks really nice (again, for a TN panel).

MSI only offers FHD 120Hz panels, no QHD.
Aorus is the other one with same QHD panels.

A maximum of 11 days until the AW17 w/GTX 1080 is released. I've ordered a general use computer toolkit and Grizzly Conductonaut from Amazon. I'm going for the 1440p 120hz screen, GTX 1080, 16 gigs of RAM, and honestly as little HDD space as possible to save cash, hah. I'll get some ssd's on cyber Monday. I'm prepared to purchase from either Dell directly or a reseller (though I feel from Dell makes more sense since I want to do the repasting myself...after iunlock makes a new guide for the 1080 heatsink of course. XD) So close!

I'm looking for a 4K monitor to do editing on and play 4k movies on.

Is the uhd screen better enough on the 17 to put up with carrying the extra weight over the 15?

Also if I have a 1080 at home, is it worth getting the enclosure for the Alienware laptop? (I'm fine with medium settings 4K, right now my desktop monitor is only a 1440p 60htz CAD monitor)
