Yup, I was going to post about this as well, same thoughts. Also 3 screws. You can see it in the service manual linked earlier. :/

Hopefully Dell has figured out the mistake by now and our 13s will be fine, but I will definitely post my results once I get mine.

I'm more pessimistic since it's a design flaw and might not be easily fixed at the factory.
However, I am happy to see that repasting should be easier than the 15/17 since the fan connectors are more accessible.
A repaste with a high viscosity compound (ie. IC7 Diamond) and some trial and error with screw tightening might be a work around.

If you are within the 14 day return period it should be no problem:
    1. Call Dell customer service
    2. Schedule pickup appointment
    3. Wait for refund (9 days in my case)
Note: if you live in the US they might charge you with a restock fee

Btw, why are you returning the 17?

Build quality not great uneven keys and i dont like the lines on the QHD and the color looks dull as hell, plus as i have the AGA for desktop-HTPC duties this will suit my needs better for on the go gaming, the power brick on the 17 weighs nearly as much as the 13 it would seem... :)

Just got my EDD 28/11/16 i just got the the standard 6700/16gb/256/oled

Ordered with a 25th Nov eta (UK). Went onto chat and discussed discount. Mentoned a budget of £1500, and looking at Asus and MSI laptops, and got an easy 10% off. Got the £1749 model, OLED, 256GB PCI-e SSD, and 16GB ram for £1574.10.

On the chat now as I write this up. Couldn't get £1547. I got £1596 with accidental damage on. So I went a model down and bought the 8gb version and 180gb with oled instead for £1506. Thought just save myself 'undred pound since I already got 16gb waiting though it's 2133 speed not 2400 and just use that difference on 1tb nvme

    Oh and 25th November too

    haha no

when i put standard web order in EDD was 28th i think then after i re submitted was 25th

Probably down to the different keyboards aligned to the fact Alienware tend to stock US retailers like bestbuy and others real early

AFAIK there aren't any of the new models that are in stores here yet

where usa bestbuy had in store pretty much straight away

Anyone know of any laptop sleeves/bags that will fit this laptops dimensions? (330mm\13.0 in x 269mm\10.6in). Been checking on 13-14 inch bags, and they fall a bit short on the depth by a cm or two, due to the extended exhaust port, behind the hinge . 15in bag will be too wide as well..

OK, I found some cases from Thule that might work... They seem to make rugged cases which seem ideal.

This one is a 15 inch hardcase sleeve for the 15in Macbook Pro. Has the height, but a bit wider than needed. This is an older model, but might be available still. There is a version 2 & 3, but not as nice

    https://www.thule.com/en-us/us/comp...untlet-15-macbook-pro-sleeve-_-tl_85854221252

This one is a padded bag for the 13 inch MB Pro. Might be a tight fit. I saw a YouTube video with a MB Pro inside which is 314mm x 219mm but had some space, so could work. Or there is the 15 inch version. I'm leaning towards this one. If I get it, I'll report back here with feedback.

Hello, Mac user here so bare with me. I like the look of this laptop especially with OLED screen and 1060. I was wondering though what do you do for storage if buying the 256gb option. Are replacing the stock drive with another larger capacity drive you have already or are you adding another drive to the spare bay and just using the 256 as boot drive for Windows. 256gb doesn't seem a lot of space especially for a gaming laptop - again, I'm new to this so forgive the question.

There's 2 hard drive slots .... 1 is used by default, you can choose any combination but it's most likely cheaper to add your own drive later.

I went with the 256GB option because I planned on using that as the boot drive and getting another 512GB drive for the second slot. If I remember correctly the upgrade price to 512GB was ~$300 so I figured adding the 512GB for under ~$250GB gets me more storage and costs less.

You all likely visit the same places I do, but in case you haven't seen this, I thought it interesting to repost

    https://www.reddit.com/r/Alienware/comments/5cdq3w/reason_why_aw15r3_cpu_over_heating/

AW13 R3 shares the same general heatsink mount - 4 screws for the GPU, but an odd 3 screw setup over the CPU. Sounds like it's possible the AW13 design might suffer from similar uneven CPU cooling as the AW15.

I'm wondering if a few things make the 13 ok with this design where the 15 not be as great or prone to issues. One is the heatsink isn't as wide as the 15, so it will be more "stable". And I'm wondering how much pressure the computer base applies to the overall design. I know not every AW15 out there has this uneven CPU temp problem, so I do wonder if this is a flaw in the design that Dell/Alienware needs to resolve.

Looking at the service manual at least the 13 look's super easy to re paste, I know its not the kind of thing we should be doing or have to do, but at least for most competent modders if required it will be easy to do.

I do not have one to check but based on past laptops I have had, it is likely that a repaste and spending a little time tweaking the screw tension should be able to address the heatsink issue.

ok i have been very lucky with dell today i originally ordered a alienware r15 r3 for home all good .due on the 21/11/16

then i had a work pc go down and they tried 3 repairs so agreed to exchange unit from an old xps 1810 they offered an inspiron aio said i didn't want that and needed something more portable
got cheeky and asked for an alienware 13 r3 and offered to pay the difference thinking they might offer the i5 same as old pc , in the end they came back and approved a new Aw 13 r3 i7 6700, qhd screen,16gb ram 512gb ssd and said the manager approved at zero cost so will use this at work ;)

    estimated delivery date 28/11/2016

When they do a warranty exchange its always at "zero cost" since they don't have a way to charge the difference. If it gets to a point where an exchange is warranted, from my experience their policy is "like or better". Either way, nice score.

I always hear people complain about Dell/Aliewnware support but in my experience, I have always had a similar experience to what you described. I actually got a 100% refund on my 15 month old M18x ($3700 laptop) because they were backordered on the GPUs when I needed one replaced. That level of support is why I usually will get the extended warranty - it is often put to use with positive outcomes and worth the cost. Contrast that with the pretty poor warranty offering on Razer laptops (the new Blade being a common comparison to the AW 13 r3) and it makes for an easy choice to me - your warranty is void if you repaste their laptops for example....

No doubt. Never seen any brand skip a generation of cpu until they also changed the gpu...actually *cough* razer blade. So damn right and take all our money. They virtually used the same cpu in the 4710/4720hq for like 3 years and nearly recycled the 970m in between twice before they pulled it and waited out the 1060 because if they commuted to sell the 970m. The only selling point for them when the 10 series came out would be just the chroma keyboard. And if they waited till next year as they do for 1060. The damage would already of been done. They would always be behind at that point. For now they have caught up. Maybe they MIGHT put Kaby lake in like April or something unless they set now.

Pushing some good frames here temps hit 90c in BF1

would seem the temps from GPU and CPU aren't that far apart unlike the 15 & 17 ?

From the looks of those settings and frame rates it would they haven't gimped the 1060 like Razer Have in the new blade at least.....

Im looking at getting the base model. My 15 with the 970m died recently. Rebooted and never came back. It cycles on and off 5 times then ends with 7 beeps. Worked fine up until then.. anywho.. The base model comes with an M.2 sata but I hope it still works with mPCIe drives too.. I don't see why not..

Great find - looks like it's shredding most games. Temps in BF1 look weird though - the rest of the games seemed more in check thermally (lows 80s in Doom, 70s in Overwatch, then oddly 60s in Witcher 3??). Witcher 3 is usually the title that pushes thermals - so I wonder if the temps this guy got are due to thermal paste/pad "settling" over time. I wonder if he could re-do his BF1 test and give us thermals if that's the case.

True - too few details then if that's the case. But still I hope for temps in the mid 80s max over time, but as long as it doesn't hit 94C (TDP limit on GPUs CPUs these days) I guess we are ok. I asked him for details on his video channel.

This video is not from an Alienware 13 R3, these videos were stolen from another YouTuber running the games on a Gigabyte P55Wv6:

The only legitimate gaming benchmark for the 13 R3 is from Dave Lee right now:

Grr, only the UK site has the new 13" available, rest of Europe still doesn't have it.
But at least the old 13" has been removed from the selection, so shouldn't take long now.
