But still, the screen panel is a LCD panel, not a LED panel. IPS panel is a LCD panel.

Oops, missed that part. But my source says the problem can happen on LCD panels as well.

I can speak to this as well - running the 1440p screen I like it for the color and contrast, but I run everything in 1080p, and it looks great. if it were a 17" screen, maybe not, but 13 (and I bet the AW 15) look fine at 1080p.

Interestingly, I have yet to see anything that didn't look pretty good and play almost with no penalty at 1440p with FXAA vs 1080p with 8xMSAA, the frame rates are very close.

How did u like the 1440p screen could u tell a difference between the 1080 and that. Also is it a worth upgrade and what u think about the 8gb or 16gb and did u notice any bleeding on either?

My feet are getting way too cold. I decided to try using my laptop in bed.

Is it okay to place the laptop on the cover sheet while not under heavy gaming usages? (Light uses, like browsing, or watching Youtube videos)

I have nothing else to play. Don't have money at the moment, so I can only browse the internet.

For the record, LCD and LED aren't mutually exclusive. LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) refers to what creates the image. LED (Light Emitting Diod) is a type of light source to backlight the screen (LCD or otherwise). Though, from what I've read, most IPS panels use CCFL (Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp) backlighting, not LED backlighting.

At the very least get a piece of plywood from the dump to put underneath it.

I'm sure you can contact Alienware to buy the part. I don't see the part available anywhere on the internet.
The adapter is only able to house 2 M.2, and currently, there is no 1 TB M.2 for sale. You also lose the ability to insert any 2.5" SSD or HDD.

I don't think there'll be a need to do anything in the BIOS. Just install the M.2s.
However, you may need to get screws for the M.2 in case the M.2 adapter doesn't come with any. And I'm trying to know what size screw the adapter uses.

I'm annoyed: here, in France, i7 is not purposed....we only have the i5 option :(

Was wondering if anyone had any experience installing a Samsung XP941 m.2 drive in their Alienware 13 and then doing a fresh re-install of Windows 8.1? Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

Not only in France, also here in Holland the same thing.. no i7 option :(. Im waiting already weeks for the i7 option and I
also contacted a DELL salesperson and he couldnt even confirm that the i7was coming.
So I dont know when it will come and not even the guarantee that it will be available over here at all

So now im in the situation that im not sure if i should still wait a few more weeks for the i7 to arrive or look elsewhere...

No. I think the MX100 was one of the first 2.5" SSD upgrades, and no one got it to work.
HIDEvolution ships internationally and has the i7 model. But other than that, I'm confused as to why the i7 isn't available outside the US.

Hidevolution are they to be trusted ? do you have experience with them ?
I checked their prices.. and when I would order the i7 version it becomes a very expensive laptop. With the 250 SSD option + i7 + shipping its almost 1800 dollar !
And I think this is even without taxes. Thats just to much for me.

I know they're good. I think some people on here can vouch for them (aside from trying to offer 900m series onto the old laptops).
However, what would be the config you were to get? You can make it slightly less expensive through this page. But they can charge a bit more than Alienware.

Some good news and some bad news.
Good news. Japan can be able to choose the i7-5500U as the processor. The i5 has also been update to the i5-5200U. China also gets the i7-5500U, but strangely not Hong Kong.
Australia gets i5-5200U and i7-5500U upgrade options, as well. But New Zealand doesn't.
Bad news? Everyone else, besides the US, is stuck with the i5-4210u. So yay for progress?

Better to upgrade the RAM to 16 GB yourself, so stick with 8 GB.
If you aren't going to be moving a lot and are a heavy gamer, get the 15. If you aren't a heavy gamer, the 13 will do fine.

Thanks! But now that I have tried using it on the bed, it really tinges your back. Would not recommend using it on a bed, unless your bed is locked to the wall.

By the way, I'm using an airbed, so my opinion doesn't reflect with everyone else at all.

Fairly soon. Japan and Australia already have the options, so it's only a matter of time before the rest of the world gets them. Most likely they are depleting stock of the 4210u.
    I give about a month.

Sorry for the slow response - I love it for multiple reasons. It's not a cheap upgrade, but if you call in I think you can whittle it down.

Between it and the 1080p there is a significant difference. The IPS panel looks good, not knocking it, but the 1440p panel is better in terms of color, contrast and it doesn't have that slight "grainy" quality that the 1080p panel has, not to mention it is touch if that is your thing. It is reflective, but it is high enough brightness that it offsets this on moderate to bright screens, but outdoors it would be an issue. I do think Dellienware is gouging a bit on it, $350 is a stretch, I think $250 would be more reasonable. That being said, I personally am sold on it, enough that when I pickup an AW 15 for on the road (a quad is just necessary for me in the work I do), I will unquestionably get one. Colors and contrast are so much better its more like working on a real monitor as opposed to a lappy screen... and that's saying a lot because the IPS panel is definitely no slouch.

Note: I am a bit more picky about color accuracy and visual quality than most gamers, I usually will settle for a lower fps count and better visuals than I think the majority on here.

Thank you Docsteel you sir are awesome, Did you ever keep the 13 or return it and how did you feel about it. m so stuck I love the maxwell on the 15 but its so heavy and big. The 13 is amazing in size but I wonder if the i7 will hold back the ga alot. also do you know if the qhd screen is the same edge led as the 1080p?

I am keeping it. I debated on either returning it for an i7, or to swap to a 15, but I had some issues early on and frankly the machine does what I want. Would I be happier if my rig got 6 or 7 more fps with an i7? Sure. But it was not enough of a difference to have to pack it up, send it back, wait on another unit and deal with it. If I planned on holding onto it for say 3 years I would definitely get the i7, but as I plan to flip it to some lucky person when the Silverlake refresh happens I just decided to stay with it. On the 15 front, I am up in the air there. I would really like one, but Silverlake promises some serious changes enough that I may wait till then to invest in a 15 (that I will keep for 3 years likely). The story is my wife cant handle fan noise, so the AW 13 works for me on the couch, but there are times I need to run serious software for work so the quad in the 15 is necessary. Had the AW 13 had a quad i7 option I wouldn't look twice at a 15 except it has that sweet 980m ; )

Ok another question mr steel lol, How do you feel about the extended warranty on these machines. I hear if its years later and they don't carry the line they replace with the closest thing which is nice. Also I know you have the qhd but if you were to get the 15 would you have to have it on that to or would you save the money and stay 1080p. Also how is the bleeding on the qhd do you have any?

Well, I always carry a warranty on any laptop I own. Hell the M11x in my sig's support doesn't run out till January 2016 :) I think with the move to BGA-based systems it is paramount.

I am definitely getting the True Life screen option on any upcoming system I buy, period but I will call in and argue the whole system down some. Even running at 1080p it looks good enough that I think its worth it (despite Dellienware's price gouging). I haven't seen any discernible light bleeding yet on my AW 13 1440p screen.

On the question of warranty replacement, a full-on replacement is a double-edged sword. Sometimes people get a significantly better system, sometimes they get one that is slightly "less" depending on how you look at it. Let's say you have an AW 14, assuming they couldn't replace it with a 14, you would get 15, but with the bottom spec dual-core, but you could almost certainly argue around that one. Discontinued screens I have heard of the most issue with. I doubt seriously if my M17x-R2 with an RGB LED screen failed tomorrow I could get a replacement.

Heh I am thinking of just keeping the 13 as well. I've been getting stupid offers when I tried to sell it (like 500-600 dollars) and I might as well just keep it.

It does what I want as well. It's just tempting to go for 15 and some upgrades with only less than 200 dollars more (retail).

    Bleh~

Yeah - its worth more than that if you have the 1080p screen for sure. With those specs it's a solid $999 system in my book for resale currently.

If my wife were more tolerant of sound you can be sure I would have sent mine in and gotten a 15, but at the same time, it is very portable and works well, better than the people just reading specs would give it credit for. People are pointing out games like Assassin's Creed: Unity but even that it will work for with moderate to low settings (which still look pretty good). Games designed for a quad will take a hit, but for the most part are still playable enough from what I have seen so far.

Why would people be offering that much. Wouldn't you be short about $100 of what you paid or break even?
You ever think of upgrading the screen to 1080p?

I'm not sure why people are throwing lowballs but yes, that would make it about 100 short for me, which is why I am not selling it at those prices. I'm just waiting. I did buy it at a low price but man, I worked hard for it...those number of hours with Dell... haha

Nah, not going to upgrade to 1080p. I use a 21:9 monitor at home (which I adore) and I really didn't find the need for it outside.

We'll see what happens. 15 is 7 pounds though. Pretty heavy to carry it around. I'll have to think about it.

They are just looking at the CPU I think and some of the other laptops are using it, maybe. There are quite a few systems in that price range with the same processor, but they lack the build quality and cooling, but mainly lack the GPU. Factoring those in the original price is reasonable, 600-700 is definitely lowball. I forgot yours had the 768 screen... I would definitely not let that go for less than $950 or so.

I'm about to order an Alienware 13 or 15. Although I prefer the 15 for it's power, portability is pretty important to me. Also, I have a pretty good desktop at home so I'm not looking for a desktop replacement. I'm currently making a pros/cons list and I'm wondering about the weight/size of the power brick. I already asked about the the 15's power-brick at this thread, but I'm also curious about the power-brick of the Alienware 13. Does anyone know the measurements and weight. Thanks.

Hm. This seems like an obvious choice to me. Honestly, if I had a gaming desktop already, I personally wouldn't even consider a gaming laptop. If I did, 13 is an obvious choice if portability is of importance. 7 pounds on that Alienware 15 is pretty heavy compared to 4.5 on Aliewnare 13 and the dimensions on the 15 is pretty big even if they say it's their thinnest yet.

I consulted the Alienware tech manual, the 4k version is even heavier. 3.4 kilos. If also comes with a pretty heavy 180 watt power-brick . Around 4 kilos in total which is too heavy to cary around.

With the I7 being broadwell and coming with a 5% IPC improvement and a better use of TDP it may be worth going for depending on how you wish to use it.
