My brand new 15 R3 came with a 180w Dell AC adapter instead of the Alienware one with blue LED ring

I'm guessing maybe the normal Alienware adapter with the blue LED ring was out of stock but I was never informed by Dell that I would not be receiving the Alienware adapter and would instead be getting this regular Dell one, and I am pretty disappointed. This Dell adapter is much larger and is probably heavier than the slimmer Alienware one, it is also a bit taller than the laptop itself.

My order invoice lists "450-AAGU Power Supply : Alienware 180W AC Adapter" which I am guessing is the normal slim Alienware one that says "Alienware" on the back of it and has the blue LED ring, so I believe I did not get what I was supposed to. I am going to contact Dell about this so they can send me the correct one, but could someone please tell me if it is safe to use this Dell adapter for now, or if there are any negative effects that may arise from it using it? Since it is also 180w I suppose there is no real danger, but maybe the specific Alienware adapter is just better suited for the laptop? Thanks.

My 13R3 came with that same model.

We buy a lot of Dells at work and all of the models we bought lately don't have the blue ring anymore (or the handy strap that some of them had).

    That is the correct adapter.
I never have gotten an adapter that says "Alienware"
Some Dell ones have a blue light and some don't.
They are all the same and work the same so long the connector is correct and it is the correct wattage.

if you are thinking on overclock, maybe you will have to buy the 240w adapter (DELL dont support overclock in any kind)

you will find generally they are branded Flextronics or Delta, these are both the Dell official makes.

I have never seen a 180Watt "Blue light" adapter.

Only the 240 Watt had the blue ring.

Witnessed this in around 20-30 systems over the years :)

    M14x's - m17x r4's

    Hope this helps.

I was gonna post this at some point (but note I'm in Australia with the different power plug). My AW15R3 came with the same one without a blue ring which surprised me given the videos I saw online. My R3 has a 1060 though.

Oddly though, my Dell 7559 with a 960m came with the blue LED charger so I was a bit disappointed that my AW didn't come with something similar since it makes charging at night easier!

The 1060 comes with 180W psu. Is written into shopping chart when you buy a new Alienware, just click "Detail".

Based on this thread it seems the determinant isn't the model of laptop but rather whether it's a GTX 1060 or 1070.

1070 gets the higher wattage with the blue LED ring.

My first 17 r4 6820hk 1070 came with that 180w charger and would tell me to check the charger when I booted up the system and suggested I use the 240w one
