hi can someone please give me a run down of the M.2 vs regular SSD battle for Alienware laptop?

for now, all I can see is just portability and slightly less weight than regular SSD drive? does M.2 has better power consumption also?

TIA for any answer, this will help me buy my AW13

From my experience, M2 SSDs offer higher sequential numbers but lower 4K reads / writes.

Sequential numbers don't matter to me as they only happen when you are transferring large files (in GBs) from one partition to another, but OS snappiness and program load times and all depend on the small 4K random reads/writes so I'd go for the regular SSD but that's just me

How reliable are they?, found that samsung gives 3 year limited warranty on the m2 840 evo vs 5 years on the regular 2.5mm one.

that is not because of the form factor but rather because of the crappy TLC Nand memory Samsung uses in the EVO line. They cannot guarantee it would work after 3 years to its full potential but with MLC it is much more reliable and durable hence why they offer a 10 year warranty and previously a 5 year warranty with the 840 PRO line

Technically from a theroetcial stand point the M.2 is on a PCI-e connection so its numbers are faster and better then SATA.
However when you compare the two in a real world environment its difficult to see the difference I would just get a decent drive with either connection and call it a day.

I would suggest a Samsung 850 pro SATA or a Samsung M.2 you wont be disappointed. Especially with their PRO 5 year warranty. :D

M.2 is either SATA or PCI-E and in the alienwares it's SATA based.

I use to M.2 500GB EVO drives and they are very capable and fast.

not anymore faster than regular SSD i think, so you paying extra for probaly the weight save and maybe power consumption.

Yep, I paid $189 each for my 500 GB M.2 850 EVO's. You can't beat that in my opinion. So I have 1 TB of SSD space for less than $400, and still have my 1TB 7200RPM drive in the regular bay.

The difference is barely noticeable on both, price and performance.

That's the main advantage you get to keep your 2.5" bays.

Just to clarify: the OP asked specifically about Alienware 13, this model can take: (1) single 2.5in SSD OR: (2) one or two M.2 SATA modules. It can not mix both. Good to remember when buying the AW13 as it requires different internal adapters for (1) or (2), only one is included.

They sell the 850 evo 1tb ssd for about $520 dollars, is that a good price?, the 5400rpm drive on my 15 is driving me nuts!

I will buy a 850evo but 128 or 256 is about 80 and 130dlls on amazon, and when the price of the 2.5" ssd go down i will buy a 1tb
Too much for a ssd and in half year it will be cheapper and faster

m.2 better option ... i had 2 SSD samsung 850 EVO on my alienware 15 ... the m.2 are better for the battery , their voltage is slower than the normal SSD and had similar performance
