I have noticed when watching a video in Chrome that the video seems to have a few frames dropping or have a bit of a lag/delay to it vs the audio track. When I drag the window to the internal display that lag goes away.

The display is connected via HDMI and the audio goes through the HDMI and out an audio port on the display for sound. I also noticed that some reason things on the external display in general, seem to be a bit more laggy or choppy compared to the built-in display. Anyone have any idea why this may be? Even on simple tasks. when there is very little CPU, memory or disk usage.

What happens when you route the audio through the internal Alienware speakers, and/or the headphone port? Ever had any lag there?

Chrome works fine without lag on my external monitor, but audio is going out through the headphones or speakers.

I think it may be more of a video thing as even when just moving downs around it is less smooth on the external display than the built-in

No lag when watching my own videos, but YouTube videos stutter in Firefox on my external. It's fine in chrome. Probably not the same issue as yours.
