So I just ordered a 17, what things should I do to help keep it running cool as possible?

Keep it elevated for passive cooling. Better yet, get a cooling pad for even better cooling. If you're gutsy you can take apart the laptop and repaste it. Outside of that, there's not much else cooling you can do.

With a heavy CPU load I did an A/B comparison elevating the rear of the laptop less than an inch on USB drives. Using Intel XTU for temps, elevated immediately cooled the core temp by 10c.

I'd agree. Just don't block the bottom vents, and the system handles the rest. Gaming/rendering for hours and hours, CPU temps 60-70 C and GPU 50-65 C. Way better than my last Asus with 880m and drastically better than my MSI GT70 with 880m.
