Is the new 17r5

with the gtx 1080 able to run games at high settings at 4K?

I would have felt more comfortable running games at max settings at 1440p but I wanted a ips display for better color and contrast.
My friends desktop 1070 runs pretty much every game at ultra settings on a 1440p monitor so I’m hoping the laptop gtx 1080 can push a 4K screen with all the settings cranked up. My one plus is the screen has g sync so in actuality the 1080 just has to keep the FPS over 40 and I won’t notice any issues at 60hz.

 

nope. Even an GTX1080Ti struggles at 4k everything maxed out. But if you reduce a few Settings the GTX1080 is fine

 

There are games such as Mafia 3 and Human revolution which won't even happen at 4k on low settings. 4k is still in its baby shoes.

I didn’t expect it to run games at 4K ultra settings @ 60hz but I expected to be able to play on ultra settings atleast at 30fps. I mostly play RTS titles on my laptops which totalwar warhammer 2 can seriously make any system crawl but last week I had the Alienware 15 with the same i9 cpu @4.8ghz with the max q 1080 and had it hooked up to my Samsung ks9000 65 inch 4K tv and it looked absolutely amazing and played with no hiccups on ultra settings. I returned the Alienware 15 because the TN 120hz screen was just horrible. My friend calibrated it for me and everything and still the colors were all washed out. I actually could barely read the text on websites it was so bad and Nvidia control panel would have my settings and it didn’t matter so I returned it for the Alienware 17 . Only difference being the regular gtx 1080 and a ips screen. For me color and contrast are more important then performance on the screen especially after seeing it on my 65 inch 4K screen there was no way I could not have good color etc. I’ll have to see when I get it. Being only a 17inch screen if it’s at 4K I could probably turn AA to 2 or even off. Or I could basically checkerboard it. I have a ps4 pro and Xbox one x which both are hindered by weak jaguar cores for CPU’s but I honestly can’t tell the difference when the game is running in true 4K or 1440p and then upscaled to 4K. Once I get it I’ll check it out and post my results. I have a feeling being only a 60hz screen with g sync I can probably tweak it so I’m at 4K with 4K textures etc with AA off.

 

I like the plan of upscaling. I spent a good two weeks using the QHD panel (both the original 1.0 version with scanlines and the 1.4) and its a pretty dramatic difference from the other 4k and FHD in terms of gamut / contrast / clarity. It is too bad Dell doesn't offer the 17.3 inch Chimei 120hz panel on this model. Great performance, as well as great gamut and clarity. I am tempted to try putting one in my 17R4 myself at some point.

 

I honestly expected to be torn apart at the even mention of upscaling. Lol But one thing using the consoles as well to game I have come to see that game designers can make games not at true 4K but using 4K textures and slight AA and the images of a 4K screen with say 2AA are really amazing. My tv I can confirm (Samsung ks9000) is honestly the best image I have ever seen watching movies etc even compared to the LG OLED screens. A good display can really help change the experience in a game which is why I had to return the Alienware 15 with the 120hz 5ms TN screen. Unless mine was broken it was possibly the worst image I ever saw on a laptop. I’m praying that the 4K IPS screen on the AW17 is a good one.

 

I'm very happy with the one on my R4 (so the same panel). I thought it'd be a little dissapointing going from 400 to 300 nits, but once it was calibrated I didn't care, it was amazing. I don't have a 4K TV yet so I haven't used my 50" 1080p TV in a while—I've been consuming content on my laptop exclusively because of how much I like the colors, gamut, contrast, and of course resolution. But you probably won't be as blown away as I was with a beast like the KS9000.

 

Yeah I honestly tell people I’m not just bragging about the ks9000. It’s a amazing buy if you can get one. It’s a year old now so I don’t even know what model replaced it but it was the top Samsung model for that year. To give people an idea of what kind of beast it is it’s 120hz not 60hz so gaming is sick on it and the dell 4K monitor is 300 Nits the tv has a peak luminosity of well over 1,200 nits (cd/m2). The laptop hooked up to the tv looked amazing.
