Is the Alienware 17 uses a starndard MXM GPU you could replace?

    Hi

Anyone here with this machine that can check? (maybe with HWInfo?)

It's all BGA socketed. Both the CPU and GPU cannot be replaced, they are soldered onto the motherboard. You'd have to install a new motherboard with the GPU and CPU installed and soldered to replace (which actually isn't that bad of an idea) With that being said, you still can remove the heatsinks and repaste if needed, but as far as upgrading goes, you should just get the maximum specs that you can, or even can't afford, when purchasing.

Much appreciate your answer 7 :(

Do you happen to know if the new GT70 has a standard MXM GPU?

I believe it does, but don't quote me. I know for sure the GT72 uses MXM. Sorry about the bad news about the new alienwares, but it's actually why a lot of faithful alienware customers left for other bands, such as sager, msi, etc. It does make me a little upset too. They removed the optical drive, didn't really make the laptop any thinner, and they still couldn't include mxm form factor for the GPU, let alone a replaceable socketed CPU? It means only one thing, they did it for cost savings.

Thanks man. I'm less thrilled about replaceable CPU, but the GPU is a more interesting matter

Just to confirm, the AW 17 R1 does have MXM but the Alienware 17 R2 doesn't.

So, is there any good reason to get the new AW17? the IPS display?

I hear good things about the Truelife display. The 970m and 980m may be locked down from overclocking because of nvidia.
Based on the cost of other models, in my opinion, it's not worth going with Alienware unless you just like the look and cost. The customer service is very poor and will make you tear your hair out.
