So the other day I was trying to apply the new thermal paste I got using the DELL Service Manual, however I had a limited time so I did a rush and I was looking at the wrong section of the manual. I was looking to "Removing the processor fan" and I tried following those steps. One of these steps suggested removing the black tape called "Mylar" which is located on the heat sink-fan merging area. I tired removing it and the tape got cut in the middle and now there is a half tape, covering half of it.

I know all of this sounds very stupid, that I know. I couldn't repaste of course so I reassembled the laptop. This happened a few weeks back. Since then I've been using the laptop everyday for gaming or school stuff and I haven't encountered any problems.

Do you think this might cause me any issues?

Also, I should have looked at the "removing heat sink" section right?

    Many thanks.

Removing Heatsink should be the right part. The machine will have no issues without that, but it is there as a protective layer between the two parts.

Thanks a lot for the confirmation, it is comforting to know that. Do you suggest me to cover the area where the tape is missing? If so what kind of a tape would you recommend?

I believe the mylar tape is used to bridge the gap between the fan and heatsink fins. It is basically there to guide the expelled air through the fins and to prevent it from leaking upwards through the gap. It may not make a huge difference but I would replace it if it's damaged.

That's exactly what it does, and I would use the same mylar tape to replace it.

@kosti, @Alienware-L_Porras thanks for the information, although there is one last thing: do you know where I can find a mylar tape in order to replace it? Is "mylar" a specific type of tape or can I just use something conventional like
    the black electrical tape

I live in Turkey so my options are limited and I am not sure where to find a specific type of tape.

Electrical tape should work but I find that in high heat situations it can start to warp and lose its adhesion. The adhesive also start to get sticky and messy over time. Locally, you can check with shops that repair electronics like televisions and audio equipment. You can also buy some on e-bay (not sure about the quality, but it should be fine).

I was going to do the repaste but I failed tearing down the laptop. In the end of the disassembly I can do the repaste.

Yes, it is my first time. I was using desktops until this laptop.
