Sorry for the self quote, but I thoughts I'd give an update to this saga as there is quite a lot to tell. As before, the starting point is my laptop was overheating (worse than any other machine on this thread that I've seen) and the QHD screen had the horizontal lines issue.
An engineer/tech visited my home on 27th June. Replaced the QHD screen which now looks much better. Regarding the heating issues, he replaced the heatsink and fans and it did the trick. My CPU temps went from 100C downloading a game to max 74C under a gaming load. it turned out that the laptop CPU was missing almost all of it's thermal pads (nice "certified refurbished" laptop...). Happy with the temps. However, when the tech put my machine back together the Alienware head on the back of the screen/the lid stopped lighting up. The tech didn't know why, called Dell for help, and eventually it was agreed that they'd send a replacement back panel.
Yesterday, the same tech (very nice chap I should add) arrived and replaced the entire back panel/lid of my laptop. Took over 2 hours, he switched it on and.....the light still doesn't work. He thinks it must be the board that lights the Alienware text above the power button that is faulty.
Got a call today and Dell basically said they've now spent too much time and money on this laptop and just want me to return it. No replacement offered. The only compensation (if you can call it that) is a 15% discount that can only be used on new computers with Dell, not on the Outlet. Considering I used a 20% discount code when I bought this laptop, that's not much use.
All in all, a poor experience. A shame as the laptop is beautiful and the customer services guys have been very friendly, as was the tech who visited. I've no issues with the individuals I've dealt with. However, the end result is that the laptop will be returned and I've wasted 4 full days waiting around on people for it (2 days for delivery as the first time the courier sent it to the wrong depot, and 2 days on tech visits), ultimately for nothing. Actually, might be 5 days, as they'll send someone to pick it up and I'll need to be in, but that hasn't been arranged yet. A waste of everyone's time :-(
Hope you all have better luck than me. Still, for those with thermal issues, there is hope. I seen a huge difference.
-
Have you straight up just asked for an exchange, instead of constant repairs? You have to be direct with them.
I had issues with my refurb 17r4 from day 1 so I straight up asked for an exchange the first time I called them. They said they couldn't exchange unless they'd attempted to repair the computer twice without resolution. I sent it in for repair twice, but different problems still persisted, so they granted me an exchange.
In regards to them only offering you a discount..
After tech support guy tells me they'll exchange the system, he transfers the call over to a guy from the exchange department. Exchange department guy tells me he can't exchange it because it's an Outlet purchase, only option is return or discount to keep it. I hang up and call tech support back, tell tech support guy that exchange guy refused to exchange bc Outlet refurb. Tech support guy tells me it was already approved and exchange department guy should have set me up for an exchange. He transfers me over to exchange department again. I talk to a new guy from the exchange department. New guy tells me he doesn't know why the other guy didn't want to exchange it,that he was supposed to, and that he'd be reporting the guy to his supervisor for lying to me and refusing to do his job.
So there ya go Dell is pretty f'ing incompetent. Maybe you got a guy who just didn't want to deal with you, like I did. I'm in the US. The process might be different over in the UK, but you might want to try one more time. Give tech support a call back and ask for an exchange.
BTW I received the exchange yesterday. They built me a brand new 17r4. Came in the retail box and everything. Only problem? They built it using the same crap AUO panel, and it still has 10-15°C difference between the cores. Hell, it even has the bezel and webcam from the Skylake r4s. It's pretty obvious they built this computer using the new old stock parts they still have laying around.
This is really just unbelievable. I can not believe Dell is the f'ing incompetent. 6/30/2017 build date and they're still using known defective parts. Unfingbelievable. I'm sending everything back for a refund. I called them a few hours ago and got that all set up. Can't wait to get rid of this headache. -
I did drop an email to the tech support guy I've been dealing with saying I wasn't happy with the resolution being offered so I'll see what they say. I'll update here in due course.
I remember drooling over Alienware PCs back in the day. Never thought I'd own one and was so excited when this one came around. Couldn't wait to get hold of it and get some high spec gaming on the go, but it has been nothing but disappointment.... :-( -
The chassis will probably be used for next update also. Defective parts or whatever you call it... Dell have already paid for the parts. Can't throw it in the dustbin. Would be a big loss. If parts are within Dell's specs and quality norm, they can't be called defective. And will be used!!Last edited: Jul 4, 2017iunlock likes this. -
Units from the big block stores tend to have it the worst. Perhaps they receive units from a whole different assembly line? Who knows...
To be fair though all gaming laptops have issues. Not just Dell. Once the AW's are properly repasted, they become the best all around gaming laptop in the segment.

Here is a recent thread about the crap AUO panel: http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/which-fhd-is-best-in-alienware-17-r4.806018/
There are many more posts out there, but that is the most recent one I can remember.
It is completely unacceptable on a high-end, premium machine. Bro, I have a laptop from 2010 that cost me $300 at the time that has a better looking screen than this $2000 Alienware 17r4.
And yes I have talked to iunlock a few weeks ago. I was planning to send it to him for a repaste, but had other issues with the laptop that needed fixing by Dell first. iunlock mentioned to me that he was aware of the grainy 1080p AUO panels. I even talked to the Alienware tech and he admitted to me they knew about this issue with the panels. Why then, are they still building new systems as of June 30, 2017, with the same crap panels?
To Dell's credit, they replaced my original laptop's screen with a LG panel which looked beautiful. Complete night and day difference between the LG and AUO. But that laptop still had other issues so I had to send it to Dell again. Then they offered me an exchange. I received a new system yesterday, with build date 6/30/2017. The new system as I said is using the same crap AUO panel I just had replaced, the CPU differences are all over the place, and for some reason it's got an old bezel from the Skylake 17r4s. So basically they're still using new old stock and the problems will continue. -
After I had published this finding, Dell saw this and acted on it. Yes, they were band-aid fixes, there is no denying that, but what a backwards approach to have to go through all the hassle of spending more money and resources of sending "not so techs,' to mess up the systems even more, let alone the horrific depot.
It really sucks, because the mistake of the HS design ruins it for everyone, including some of the good folks over at Dell. Trust me there are some good people there that are on our side and actually understand this stuff with a clear mind....however...
Yes, it is a huge company with the inevitable politics that hinder things from getting done correctly.
I know of a few individuals at Dell, where if they were given the power to call the shots, we wouldn't be dealing with these amateur issues that is causing a huge hit on Dell's/AW's reputation for screwing up something that should NOT be screwed up.
Again...
Current...
The CPU die is not even centered. SMH...
Mounting points as weak, or perhaps weaker than the Dell XPS? Come on...
Before... (Mounting points were awesome..very beefy and sturdy.)
The point here is, it is inarguable that it was a HUGE step backwards with the design and engineering.
Yea yea, 980M before vs the 1080 now...more stuff to fit etc... some may argue.... but hold on...
It is NOT impossible and even if the laptop had to be made thicker to accommodate a proper design, then so be it!
Get away from this thin crap when dealing with a flagship gaming laptop within the line up. Reserve the thin stuff for a whole different segment, within the line up. Not that hard...
People who buy the flagship doesn't care about how thin it is.... look at the whole direction with MaxQ LOL. Trying to go all thin with a false naming scheme in ratio to its performance ...GTX 1080? Give me a break... It should be called GTX 1070M. That would have been more proper.
So with that being said, now with this whole MaxQ thing, there is no excuse to go thinner on the flagship offerings. <- Point proven.
It'll be real interesting what we'll see from the mainstream companies for their next revisions....
The question is, who will actually do it right?

for dell always buy brand new then return for refund if there is a problem then keep repeating the process until u get a good unit. That's what I like about Bestbuy, hassle free return and refund. But even dell.com it is not too bad you just have to wait longer for the refund. In the end this way is always faster than going through the dell replacement route.Last edited: Jul 4, 2017 -

I have a 7700HQ AW 15R3 and was hitting upper 80's and sometimes lower 90's. I used Intel Extreme Tuning Utility to adjust 3 parameters and now I'm always below 79. Each CPU is different so you'll need to experiment but for me the Core Voltage Offset at -0.090, Turbo Boost Power Max at 42W (instead of 45W) and Turbo Boost Short Power Max at 51W (instead of 60W) solved it. Once I'm out of warranty after a year I may try the repaste and improved heatsink screw ideas but for now this is keeping me in a very safe temp range. I do see the max frequency still hits 3.8GHz but tends to stay in the 3.3 to 3.6GHz range when I'm running high load 3D intensive games. The GTX 1070 stays below 68 and was never hot.
-
The point is that MaxQ should not even be considered nor in the same sentence when talking about a flagship.
It does not belong in a flagship. Period.
To be content with a MaxQ as a flagship just supports the wrong direction the industry is heading with offering gimped products in a flatship laptops that doesn't need it.
MaxQ has it's place in lower end laptops, but not in flagships....
Can you link me where it reaches 20K in fire strike? Also, the data of the cpu and gpu temps. -
I own the unit since 2 days.
I did a first FS run with +200MHz on gpu and +200MHz on vram
CPU not overclocked but with -100mv undervolt.
TDP of 1080 maxes out at around 120W. GPU runs at around 1600-1700 MHz constantly at around 75C. So I would not call it crippled. The ratio between form factor and powa is quite unique.

An OC'ed GTX 1070 can do 22K+.
MiniQ GTX 1080 would have been more proper to be named GTX 1070M. (NVIDIA with it's trickery.)
It would be getting less heat...but when there are lies, it will get called out.
75C is NOT good for something that is suppose to be more efficient.
This is a AW 15R3 with a regular GTX 1070 @ 133W+ (<- focus being the power and temp) at a cool 59C max on FS Loop. So 75C in a miniQ that is proposed to be efficient is a LIE.
My fully functional non gimped GTX 1080 in my 17R4 runs in the high 50C's and low 60C's even with the CPU OC'ed at 42x. @Papusan can enlighten you more with other examples.
75C in a miniQ is way to hot. Not impressed. Nothing personal. As I've said MaxQ has its place in the lower end gaming laptops. I'm all for more horsepower in something like the XPS 15, rather than that tiny 1050.
I have brand new 15R3 / GTX 1070 in the box that I'll be opening tomorrow...
Flagship? You're kidding right? I hope so.... NO that is NOT a flagship LOL.
You do realize that MaxQ is a marketing gimmick right? (For NVIDIA to extract more money out of those that don't know better...)
I believe @D2 Ultima has an excellent write up to enlighten the masses. @Eason can back this...... If you want to receive the good word, you must read this to enlighten yourself before ever calling a crippled silicon a flagship.

Gentlemen, I know there's a huge Max-Q's GPU hype, but what's the point with CPU's core temps diff ?
-
Regarding temps: You compare temps of your magically optimized units with a stock unit out of the box. It would be fair to compare temps of a stock AW15 to the ASUS. At least the cpu core temps of the ASUS are not uneven. I will repaste and repad in the future, we will see how the temps work out then.
What counts for me is to be able to have nearly the same gaming experience like with the AW17 with approx. half the noise of the cooling system in a true mobile and light unit driving the GPU in the range of 1600 Mhz at a voltage below 0,8.
In relation to size this is in my view a flagship unit. If you leave size out of the equation the AW17R4 is neither a flagship unit, because my P870DM3 with SLI 1080 runs circles around the AW.
I am looking forward to your review of the ASUS, try not to be biassed in favour of AW in the first place, at least you don´t seem to be biassed with regard to BGA.
I will stop posting about the ASUS in this thread now, but we can discuss this further in the ASUS thread if you like ;-)Last edited: Jul 6, 2017Vistar Shook, hmscott and iunlock like this. -
The issue is also price, perhaps obviously. With a discount code, my 17r4 with 6700HQ, 16gb RAM, 256gb SSD and gtx1070 cost £1400 from the outlet. Pricing up the same laptop brand new, but with the 7700HQ now, it costs £2400. £1000 of a difference! Admittedly, with other codes and cashback offes just now, I might save another £300 so £2100 vs £1400. UK prices are much higher than USA prices generally so to compare at today's exchange rates. I paid $1807 (£1400), but if I bought the same machine brand new (exc. change of processor), it would cost me $2711 (£2100). For that price, I'd rather not bother. I'd probably just buy a cheaper HP Omen or Asus ROG (my current ASUS ROG has been absolutely fantastic, which doesn't compare favourably to my first Alienware experience unfortunately). -
In regard to the ratio, I'm all about that and completely agree ..this is what a lot of people fail to see and I've preached on this very fact a ton. -
A lot of people can understand power to weight ratio for race cars, but can't seem to understand this analogy when it comes to gaming laptops.
On the flip side, there is the price factor that may not line up to some, but to me it's like spending $50K on a mid-sized luxury car and being able to clock in 13's in the 1/4, vs a $40K stripped down / gutted 'can' with roll bars and slicks slicks.
However, the point that I was trying to make is that a GTX 1070 (which is a fantastic card) could achieve the efficiency of what they are marketing as the MaxQ.
With the naming aside, it is a bit of a rinse, recycle and reuse methodology and the biggest thing here is seeing Nvidia trying to pull a fast one with the naming scheme.
Which brings things back to square one, because they could have done this with the 1070.
Now another thing is...what the heck is a MaxQ doing in a 15R3 chassis? LOL...right? If it's suppose to be about thin and light, I don't get why it's fitted in that chassis + that price tag.
Either way, I reserve my full opinion on the new cards until I can fully test it to obtain my own data. - And boy am I ready to tear it down and to put it to the test... -
@iunlock: I always had a bad feeling or vibe not to buy new 15 r3/17 r4 and instead opted for 15 r2. After few months, bang they release the new version. So I was little disappointed but not now. I was lucky. Hahhaa. I'm not saying 15 r2 has all issues fixed but issues like PCh are still there @Papusan, @VICKYGAMEBOY and @judal57 can confirm this. I haven't repadded yet since atm no money. Its sad truth that AW is still DIY and incomplete without the workmanship of an owner or an enthusiasts or noobs.
Anyway @Papusan did lay down the facts about LGA and BGA. So that turned me to dark side that's LGA FTW. So, BGA needs to go away for good.iunlock likes this. -
As for the bga vs lga debate, the issue is that very few companies offer lga.
BGA has its place in smaller devices and ultra-books and it is a luxury that we all enjoy daily.
The whole issue is very complex and it takes a lot to fully understand how it all works...
I might do a piece on this to give my perspective on the issue as a whole, in hopes to enlighten people of everything that is involved surrounding the industry, demand, etc... -

I care how unlocked the slider is. I just need to see the limits of the overclocking slider. It doesn't matter if setting +1000MHz is stable or not; I just need to know if you *can*. That thread does ***NOT*** show "all info regarding overclockability". It shows that you have managed to overclock it and have gotten it rather far on a low voltage. That is irrelevant to what I am asking.Last edited: Jul 7, 2017Papusan likes this. -

Sorry to tell all max-Q fans that...it's just a marketing trick, come on don't be blind you're better than that.
The whole purpose of max-Q is to boost summer sales without spending too much on R&D ! The next flagship Nvidia chipset is called VOLTA not max-Q...and it's going to be awesome . A 1080 max-Q is a lion but under a lot of tranquilizer..and in a cage. Just take the normal, full power 1070 !
What bothers me is intel now, they're acting so cheap in their CPU design, whether its the Volt tuning or the cheap thermal paste inside the lid for lga...it's horrible, regardless of the motherboard/barebone my Nvidia chipsets never outreached 67°C since Maxwell ...intel it's another story.
To this day i did not encounter a kaby lake/skylake CPU that did not accept -110mV, I have the impression (correct me if I'm wrong) that they just lower the tolerance of their chip design so that the most imperfect, inefficient silicium chipset, (the few ones that actually need a +110mV compared to the average) can be sold, i cannot see why talented engineers will otherwise voluntarily cripple the thermal performance and power consumption of their chipset.Vasudev likes this. -
There is no 1070 matching the performance level of a max-q 1080 at the SAME power envelope of around 110W. This is the whole point. Is it so difficult to understand that there are at least some people who want the best possible performance in a lightest mobile form factor and do not care much about the naming and the price tag? There will always be compromises and yes, nvidia is a greedy company. But they can command the price because they de facto own the mobile gpu market. Live with it.
The AW17R4 is a mess in many ways. I was lucky, core differential is not to high and after hours of tweaking it performs as it should without stuttering. However, a lot of other people were not lucky.
At leadt max-q led to novel chassis designs like the zephyrus. I have a P870DM, AW17R4 and Zephyrus here side by side. All 3 are aimed at different groups. According to HID they sell the Zephyrus like hot cakes, so obviously ASUS did something right here. But maybe all of the buyers are just stupid
And regarding volta in a mobile platform, I fear it's a long wait.

Now some of the things they are selling you with Max-Q Pascal could be put in the normal Pascal,....
- better selection of the most efficient chipset in the factory ? they can do that for normal Pascal !
- optimizing the bios for efficiency ? They could do that for normal pascal.
I know MAX-Q offers hardware optimizations (voltage regulators) and a thermal guideline for OEM (vapor chambers, backplate that opens etc.) that is normal and I'm happy to see those innovations,..because they are real !
I feel that they held back some processes for max-Q that they could put into the normal Pascal (and they can still put many), maybe I'm wrong
When 12nm, HBM2 Volta begins to appear I'll probably be the first one to preorder in Europe haha, but I don't want some marketing tricks like MAX-Q to delay Volta, just for marketing purpose.Last edited: Jul 29, 2017 -

@iunlock The max temps looks good but idle temps looks a bit off at an ambient of 22C. -
hold up, hold up, hold up,
"they"?
I did my own LM paste job buddy, dell cant be trusted to do anything at all.
I have sent my laptop to the depot to get LCD replaced, and they return a computer that has light bleed on the left side of the screen, dead pixels, after 2 weeks.
in the gist: the tech replaced my LCD with another LCD with one dead pixel. The Lid was also replaced, but he chose to use the old bezel, which caused lightbleed. Waste of time for me.
Not the end of the story as, the palm rest was requested to be replaced bu the tech did not deem my request worthy enough and sent the laptop back as is.
I have done 2 LM Jobs on this machine. I have scraped LM off this and sent it to be repaired and repasted with LM again, after they sent the machine back with new Motherboard and Heatsink. My Heatsink is CCI and My CPU is warped. But Conductonaut is my friend so i dont complain.
