The 980m was a pretty big jump in performance over the 880m. But in sli the 880m still seems to outperform the 980m. But that’s gaming related.
But you’re getting a 4K display on the 17” and a two generation newer cpu. Productivity wise that would be good for your Autocad work if you don’t use external monitors.
It’s a bit of a toss up in my eyes. The 18” Alienware’s are kinda unique since that size isn’t made anymore. I think I’d lean trading it for the newer cpu and better screen though.Papusan likes this. -
You can upgrade the 18 to 980M SLI lol
From a performance standpoint it isn't much of an upgrade.
BUT you get the amplifier port so you can add an amplifier and add like a Quadro GPU in the future as well.
4K screen is also nice.
It's a tough call but the trade isn't one sided so it's fine either way you go
The 18 was known to have motherboard failures so idkTerreos likes this.
HELP SWAP: Alienware 18 R1 4800MQ GTX880 SLI 16GB to Alieware 17 R3 6820HQ GTX 980M 4GB, Worth it?
