    I have an alienware r4 17 with a gtx1070.

My question is a graphics one, I have 8 gigs of videoram but when messing with video settings if I turn up the settings to use more than 3 gif of the ram it lags.

Could you be a little more specific? What do you mean by "messing with video settings"?

Turning the video setting up in a game. For instance I can play Assassins Creed origins at max everything in 4k, but I have to down sample the resolution to 50% to get 60fps, if I play it at true 4k I cant push past 30fps. Also it does not matter what the other setting are at, its 100% effected by the resolution.

When it shows how much video ram is needed anything over 3megs of the 8 causes lag.

With AC Origins in 4K, a GTX1070 isn't going to scream. 30 FPS sounds about right. That is a bunch of pixels the card is rendering, regardless of what the other settings are pegged at. Notebookcheck.net benched the GTX1070 (laptop) with 31-32 FPS at 4K, so you're GPU doesn't have issues. It appears to be working as intended.
