Has anyone tried using the port for the GA as a connector for something else? In my case, I'm thinking of Hard Drives or SSD's, in a custom box or somehow used in the GA box.

Has anyone tried or heard of sticking a PCI-card SSD into the GA? There are vague reports online of using a PCIe ribbon soldered to a PCI slot (+power supply) as a poor man's GA.

And what of the sensitivity to disconnecting the GA port while the computer is running?

Nope, not currently. Pretty sure Instant BSOD if you yank out the GA plug

That would trigger a restart or black screen. The port is proprietary, you could have many issues getting to run anything there that's not the Amplifier.
