May have posted this in the wrong section the first time around.

    I wanted a new notebook

    The short version
I wanted a MSI Steath with the 1070 but there going for 1600+ for the one I wanted. I was going to wait until Black Friday or Christmas but im like everyone else and when I want my toys I want them now!

Anyway - shopping every deal site out there and ebay and craigslist I came across...
    Alienware 17Gaming Laptop $1000
*** REAL DEAL gaming laptop rated best in the world by PC software magazine.....call or text serious inquiries only!!!
*****BRAND NEW****** (Thats the part that caught my eye)

    So i'm like "Yeah right!"
But I continue reading the specs

    SPECS
Intel Core i7-6700 (Quad Core, 6MB cache, up to 3.5 ghz with turbo boost)
    17.3 inch UHD (3840x2160) 4k IGZO IPS Anti-Glare 400-nits display
    Nvidia GTX 970
    32GB Dual Channel DDR4 2133 (16gbx2)
    512MB PCIe(boot) + 1TB 7200 RPM Sata 6Gb/s (Storage)
    BlueTooth 4.2
    Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 8260 2x2
    8 Cell 92W Hour Battery
    Dell limited Warranty 1 year
    Accidental Damage Warranty 1 year
    Windows 10 Home

So I look at these specs and im like $1000 yeah right! but I text and ask for the Dell Service Tag #, I run it on the dell website and it comes back legit with a manufactured date of 9/2/2016.. So I call Dell and ask for any reports of theft on that tag and it comes back clean. I ask what I would need to register it and as it has NEVER been registered before just go to there website and register it no issues.

I call the owner up he's having financial difficulties and wants this machine gone, I offer him $900 (its all I had at that time) and I would pick it up in the morning. I pick it up verify everything is complete and viola I am now an Alienware owner.

So those specs $900 and I think I got a great deal on a NEW notebook. This also has the Alienware Graphics Amplifier option so I can plug in a 1060/1070/1080 option when/If I need more power. so it will lengthen how long I can keep it. So Im estatic......then I come here and start reading the Alienware section and its filled with terror.

So was/Is it a good choice or a bad choice. Should I keep it or try to sell it? I built and identical machine Brand new on the Alienware site and it came to $2300 to 2400 the screen is drop dead gorgeous and its running great atm.

What do you guys think? I dont see as many happy people in here as expected soo....

The specs are too outdated now. Any 1060 is quicker than a 980M laptop. It destroys any 970M laptop.

True but with the Alienware Graphics Amplifier I can still use a 1060/1070 or 1080 gfx card. Only drawback is I wont be using it when I travel but I doubt Ill lug around a 17" notebook much. I'm still looking for a light machine for that.

If everything is working as intended then it's not a bad buy. That's a really good price and most newer alienware machines will cost you about 2k+

Really is the 1060 quicker than a 980m?

It is. The 1060 is only a tad slower than a desktop 980GTX. a stock clocked 980M is around 10% slower than a desktop 970GTX.

Thanks all I thought it was a good buy at $1000 and amazing at $900. The 970 is slower than a 1060 but at least Alienware is giving us the option to use the newer cards with our current notebooks.

I'm also moving away from the machine in my Sig which still has a Nvidia 675m so a 970 is a huge upgrade from that, and getting the amp and a 1080 this holiday season should leave me gaming for a long time.
