Decisions, Decisions I decided it was finally time to replace my old reliable M17x R2 and i am current building an Alienware 17 and I am trying to decide between a GTX 1080 and the UHD display. I am not as concerned about the graphics card as I also plan to get the Alienware Amplifier but am confused as to why you cannot build out a GTX 1080 with the UHD display. I know that QHD has the better refresh rate but as i have never had anything above 60hz before i do not feel that is as important to me as the UHD resolution. If i am being stupid please let me know :)

Be sure to choose KabyLake because uneven core temps and heatsink issues are fixed. I'd say choose 1080 and you can game on the go. Also, AGA w/ 1080 or 1080 Ti will offer desktop like GPU performance. One more thing, choose HK series of CPU preferably 7820HK, so that you can OC in case your GPU bottlenecks CPU and also improve physics scores in 3dmark.

I was definitely going to get the Intel 7th Generation Intel® Core™ i7-7820HK, i just dont know if i will regret not getting the GTX 1080 or not getting the UHD display. The below is the build i am currently leaning towards:

If you intend on using AGA hooked ti 17 r4 then I'd say you can save some cash by buying 1070 and buy a 1080 Ti and AGA. I think they're providing 99Wh battery instead of 68Wh, am I correct?
At the end of the day, if you want 1080 desktop like perf. on laptop choose 1080 based config. Otherwise choose 1070 or above linked model. I think if you go Ultra or High settings you can tear through latest games @FHD and older games will run at 4K. Only thing I'm worried is about scaling issues with windows 10 with 4K. If you've scaling issues you can scale down to FHD and enjoy the clarity and FPS in games.

Actually to be honest from normal sitting distance QHD and UHD look pretty similar on such a small display. And I find for gaming 120Hz is way more enjoyable than 60 especially in fps games.

I'm not sure where you get this info from. The few people I've seen post here with Kaby Lake procs are still running way too hot.

A few number of new AW had good temps. Yes, most of them still face problems, dunno why? Still it needs a repaste.

I am comfortable with a re paste if that's all it needs (i did it to the M17X R2). I am still torn up about the QHD/UHD decision more so then the Vid Card because i do plan to use an AGA.

Just buy the TN version and replace the panel with a 4K display. I got mine for $80 which is way less than what dell would charged even if they offered it as a upgrade.

I guess if i was going to do that wouldn't just make sense to but the cheaper laptop with the UHD and use the AGA like i plan to anyway?

No evidence anything has changed with Kaby .... Still seeing lots of HOT numbers. I'm waiting to see how the Kaby/880GTX/120's Heat #'s look STOCK.

I would think it would make more sense to not waste the money on buying dells UHD screen to begin with. There asking a $400 premium to jump to 4K for the same screen you can buy for $80 on ebay. Use the $320 savings to get the more powerful 1080 version then upgrade the screen later on. That way you dont even need the AMP right now. The only thing you can put in the AMP at the moment more powerful then the gtx 1080 would be a 1080ti aways and once you factor in the performance loss of using the AMP with the built in screen to begin with you would be right back at the performance of the 1080.

    Seems legit your post.
If you have a 1080 laptop is a waste of money and time to get an AGA right now. Maybe in two years from now when the 11XX? series gets launched.

Yeah the bezel just snaps right off. All you have to do is put your fingernail in the little groove along the bezel. Then once its off there are 6 screws that hold the screen in and one connector. Takes about 15 minutes to do in total.

This is the screen i bought: http://www.ebay.com/itm/17-3-034-4K...TJ6VM-Laptop-Display-3840-2160-/132116273494? you have to order it from china but it arrived at my door in 4 days.

If you go back a few pages in this forum you will find a thread with pictures on how to do it if your interested.

Yeah there was a guy on reddit who tested out the AMP with his 1070 laptop and a gtx 1080 gpu. You loose anywhere from 5-10% running it through an external monitor and another 5-10% on top of that if you run it through the internal screen. So judging by what the OP wants to do, hes going to loose about 10-20% performance off of whatever he throws in the AMP. The amp right now is pretty useless until they come out with a card that is atleast 50% faster. I bought the AMP with my dell credit and i figure by the time the 1200 series rolls around the AMP will shine.

I was able to get the UHD model $300 cheapier then the QHD so that is what i went with. I will put a 1080 FE or TI in the AGA for hardcore gaming when needed.

I got the UHD, no G-Sync but again saved $300 over the QHD/1080 model. I already planned to get an AGA and i can look at a good monitor for gaming to go with it if i don't like the performance with the laptop monitor.
