So I got my new 17R4 with the 1070 and immediately I noticed the GPU temps were out to lunch. Idling anywhere from 50-70 and even just sitting at the menu in SC2 was pulling 90+ let alone trying to actually play a game. Clocks were jumping all over the road map as expected with the GPU trying to cool itself.

On the bright side the CPU didn't seem to bad aside from the GPU going up temp wise with the CPU like clockwork even when not gaming.

I pulled the unit apart to repaste and found this....Nice hey? I assume the heatsink is borked because after two repastes it is still hitting 90+ when I try to even launch a game so I don't think the heatsink is making correct contact at all. Tech support is sending me a heatsink so I guess we will see....just how I wanted to spend the first week with the new laptop. Needless to say I won't be using it....at all until those parts get here which won't be anytime soon over Christmas.

Spent some more time playing with it....nothing I can do. The heatsink is so warped it is barely making contact with the GPU. Will have to wait until the replacement heatsink gets here to see if that helps. Alienware have already offered to exchange it again with another new one if the heatsink does not fix the problem to my satisfaction.

Not sure on the exact date but it was after the 6th, it has the CPU fix. Ordered the 1st, shipped the 12th received on the 23rd , repasted the night of the 23rd and tech support called on the 24th. Now I wait....the parts I need are back ordered , expected back in stock on the 30th, I hope because they are having the new pad added to them.

Cut away that excess thermal padding. That might cause the issue.

Good grief. We know what to do...let's get this reported right away.... you're not the only one. We've seen this multiple times now.

See the thing is, Dell is making the effort, which is good, but the monkey's at the factory are the ones that are ruining it for Dell. So Dell, get on it already and whoever is in charge of the QC at the factory over there....get on him/her right away, because obviously there is an issue here with someone dropping the ball.

I sent an email to Umar as soon as I found it and he was less then impressed that I had this happen and said he would be looking into it.

I tried that and bending the heatsink in a few different ways that looked like it may have been preventing it from sitting straight but nothing helped at all, in fact nothing had any impact at all and the space remains with the heatsink not making contact. Either the heatsink is beyond warped and a new one will fix it, or something else is preventing a proper seal but if a new heatsink does not fix it 100% then I will have them send me another one, although waiting another month for a new system to be built is less then appealing.

Very strange indeed. Curious about if a new heatsink will fix it.
