The desktop 6700K has a TDP of 91W, while the mobile 6820HK sits at 45W.

When the 6820HK is OC'ed, it can go into the 90C's; in fact it is a lot more thirsty than the 6700K, which means that despite the 6820HK being 45W, it is actually less efficient.

Can the 6820HK be tuned to be efficient? Yes, but the tolerance level of the 6700K trumps a 6820HK.

ie. ..with a mobile chip, when you OC, you're already revving it into red line and trying to squeeze what little it can while it's at its pinnacle. On the other hand, a 6700K is a lot more tolerant (strong) to where it'll cruise at 4.6GHz without breaking a sweat.

    ie. .. (engine analogy) - A 6820HK is like a 4cyl. Turbo producing 300HP / 250lbs of torque at near redline, while a 6700K is like a V8 N/A producing 300HP / 300lbs torque at lower rpm's...

Now...let's pull a huge boat with each engine. (Yacht)

    See the difference?

Now with Pascal yes, that is the case. However, if one ends up with a lemon CPU and good GPU or the other way around. No bueno and 'no can do' anything about it.

However, on a LGA/MXM board although the CPU won't be much to swap out, the MXM GPU will cost one his kidney. Well maybe liver.

    Double edge sword.

The Red pill or Blue pill?

@iunlock thanks, my point is that out there you can find people that need MOBILE gaming laptops, and people that need really strong CPU laptops. MSI in this moment is the 1st brand selling gaming notebooks, but why ? because they have gaming laptops with medium-low cost ..you cant think that all gamers want to pay 3000USD for a laptop... here, most of MXM guys dont understand that majority of people are casual gamers... mxm is not good deal, talking about money.
in fact, if the 6820hk were removable, like the 6700k is, i would choose the 6820hk over 6700k , because the intel HD allow me to work for something like 6 hours or more.
there is one reason why I should choose the 6700k over 6820hk ? you can have at least 1 more FPS playing games at 4,6GHZ than 4Ghz ?
4ghz looks really good to me
if you need a laptop for work, why you dont buy an asus or a clevo with an nvidia quadro ?
why you need to call the mobile gaming laptops trash ? if your laptops can handle more than 30 minutes playing ... these laptops dont have anything of "mobile" ... is like walking with a mini ITX and a 17" display attached hahahaha... you really need to plug that thing if you want to use it more than 1 hour
these type of laptops are insane bulky, more than i can resist... i cant imagine me putting that thing in a normal chair of an university hahahahah you will look like a fool lol
what is the point of having a laptop than cant browse more than 2 hours with 0% brightness ?

Beecause they have lying a lot of low binned chips they need to get rid of. And OEM's like Dell and other buy this low binned chips in big quantities. Why should Intel deliver their best silicon to them? Intel are smart. They know OEM's give a damn and push out their Crap :D

See my reply to @Mobius 1 below.

It was exactly what I meant. How many screwed AW buyers, do you think there are out there? And how many new AW laptops in every home has serious heating problems with massive Throttling in the end? Most part of the AW owners need to trust that Dell's tech (mostly useless tech who is hired by Dell) fixes temp and throttle problems with the same thermal grease garbage. They will never ever get a functioning gaming laptop. Aka they are screwed @Mobius 1
Not even a good thermal paste like Gelid Extreme, ICD or grizzly Kryonaut can fixes all these problems. Only the few who can apply Liquid metal can have a working laptop.
    Eg. 2x re-paste and still problems http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...16-owners-lounge.797458/page-42#post-10379007

Yes there is a purpose for each type of machine. Heck, that's why I have a MBPr for everything else, except gaming. It's smaller, lighter, thinner and more practical no doubt.

I think the point being made here is specifically on gaming laptops. Can there be different level's? Sure...but where the madness began was with these OEM's brainwashing the masses with words like, "Powerful Gaming Laptop / Desktop Replacement etc..." all the while going proprietary, stripping away any freedom for upgrades etc...

So if it's broken down into tiers than that's logical, but still these OEM's are causing havoc on the enthusiasts that want the freedom and not be stuck with what is offered and call it, "POWERFUL." It's a joke. 6700HQ is not powerful, yet these OEM's spend Millions on marketing to brainwash the masses. Sad reality.

There are so many variables to this that we can go on for days talking about it from every angle, but the bottom line is....there is corruption and it lies at the very foundation of these OEM's robbing the enthusiasts from what once was....

Also a DTR is not meant for battery life. If anyone buys one thinking that it will have stellar battery life is gravely mistaken. On the other hand, what about those that want to game on battery? Well...then the choices are limited and so does the power that comes with it on battery...

Gaming and Battery Life are still very much an oxymoron, until we can figure out some nuclear powered laptops....until then, IMO I think focusing on battery life on true gaming laptops is a waste. Can one have the best of both worlds? Sure....but battery life should not be a deal breaker for anyone when purchasing a gaming laptop....instead, just be glad that there is a battery to turn it on when not on AC power.

The new AW's will likely be the best candidate for that, but again don't count on it being spectacular although it does seem to excel in this category.

This is a very complicated issue in whole...it's hard to make everyone happy because we all have our own wants, needs and desires.

@iunlock for example if i want just work on a clevo with a 1070 mxm and a i7 6700k how much hours do you think this laptop is going to work ... browsing and doing word stuff ...
and another thing, for example i use solidworks on battery, is not battery drainer like a game
i use my laptop for both, i need a laptop to play and also that i can use it like you use your macbook pro. i am not rich hahaha i need to find a laptop that can give me both

Because for most laptops it is too cumbersome to cool. not only the cpu itself but also the pch next to it.

I hear ya...and that holds to be true with most people in needing one laptop to be able to do it all.

Decent gaming + Work programs + Thin + Huge battery + Respectable battery life + Built like a tank etc... There are many choices, but AW fits the bill like a glove.

It all depends on the user's needs. If it's CPU power 6820HK at the least, but if you need more CPU power then go P775DM3 or heck even the Tornado F5 if you don't plan to hook it up to an external monitor to game as the display ports are last gen speeds. There are many choices....just don't go 6700HQ in this case.

    GPU wise...well...Pascal.

I think it is less heavy than AW15R3 but have much better processing power(Use TS and you have BGA power draw :D). This Barbone weighs barely over 2.9KG. But it is thicker than 15 Aw

Thicker, less battery and less well made chassis. but fun to mod. also i think the cooling is better with the aw15.

The barebone is really cheap, so i might mod and sell it.

I thought weight was important as well for small portable notebook. Even more important than thinness. And +0.5 KG is a big difference between two small laptops in 15 inches sizes. I don't remember what @Diversion said about the battery time with down clocked BGA clockspeed on the go, but I would think it will increase the ordinary battery time. A nice small laptop with the correct tweaking of processor settings and decent thermal paste. And cheap as well.

The limitation is not chip tdp, it's the crap paste intel put on the IHS

The limitations isn't the chips as you nicely saying. Neither the paste Intel use under IHS. The limitations is CEO like Mr. Azor and the direction OEM's have chosen. Read exactly what Mr. Azor saying about desktop chips in laptops!! Not only what's written in the red boxes.

If you read between the lines it is like this, if they put intel desktop in laptops on a scale like they do. they do not receive any support and warranty on these products. if cpu's fail dell will be **** out of luck. intel is abusing their position to no end. lets hope AMD zen will change that.

A 6 and 8 core cpu in laptops would be great.

LoL. Just couldn't be bothered to design without Intel support. His excuse for non upgrade-able CPU and is funny too. The AGA LOL. Since when does a GFX card have anything to due with CPU upgrade path ?

Credit where its due though: Azor has managed to keep hold of Alienware somehow; I thought it would have become like the Omen and Envy lines of HP by now

Yeah, Intel screw up, but the same should be said to all OEM's who deny desktop i7 in any of their model line. Remember the big mess with Hotwell BGA. Intel doesn't do anything of support to helping fixing the mess. I mean it's Still not a good reason to skip desktop chips in laptops. At least not in bigger chassis like 17/18 inches sizes!! Even in 15" size.
And 6 core Cpu will come. But with low crippled TDP and most likely low clockspeed. You remember when the first quad cores chips came in laptops... Low useless clockspeed. I don't remember but maybe the Q9000? Even 2 cores chips worked better in some applications as well as gaming.

Edit @ThatOldGuy Yeah. What have graphics from AGA to do with processor performance? :D

And with new tech like 6 cores i7, we will get same all over again. Low powered 6 cores processors with low fully locked clockspeed!! 6 cores processors with fully locked 45W TDP, LOL

It's likely that with coffee lake the 45w tdp is more than enough to supply 6 cores
