Funny thing I found on the 15R3 (2016) heatsink...

That's hilarious no doubt, but hey...the thing does cool like a champ as we know from first hand experience. The thing is copper though ya? The fins that is...put some liquid metal on that ROFL to transfer the heat to the lonely fin end piece. :p

That's ridiculous... What's next? Make it so if you disassemble the system, it voids the warranty? Wouldn't surprise me.

Wow...they couldn't even machine that piece together? Come on. I've handled more than a few dozen different laptops in my life, and I can say I've never seen a heatsink with more radiator fins TAPED to it.

Alienware spent all their lead / solder to make BGA mobo. Of course they can't afford soldering that piece on!

Haha yea...well in reality the new AW trumps most systems if not all in its class and above its class with cooling so the attention and money went toward where it needed to go, the cooling system...I wouldn't doubt if that that extra fin piece was a middle finger to say...."screw you, what do you got? A laptop that can't even stay cool?" - <-- Also, true with stock toothpaste AW's, but once repasted it's another story...

It is funny though...like WTHeck is that? ....I'm including all these details in my review...so fair there's not much to fault. The overall build quality on this thing walks circles around other machines. That's just a fact.

Probably aesthetics, AW takes care of the details a lot more than other companies. Also, if that piece was soldered on it won't make much of a difference without airflow anyways...

So in the end nothing is lost even with that piece unsoldered, this laptop is exceptional nonetheless.

I agree.... it doesn't affect anything anyway LOL...

This is more so a fun joke...

Heck, if I had a system (which I do) that has crappy cooling, I would watch myself in crackin' jokes, because the truth is, this AW cools better than my other systems LOL...just saying...

if the copper is making contact, then it is still working. Essentially the same as those stick on copper shims you can buy, just looks better. Not sure why they didn't make it one piece though.

The shim/small heatsink uses 3M 8810 thermally conductive double sided adhesive tape, this does not.

    Holy Moly !!!

The new Alienware filthy business cancer tactics are spreading from the failed new Aurora abomination of the failed low grade PSU and cheap clone Mobos and retarded power supply to this, I didn't expect this to happen.

The proof is in front of your eyes, the degraded options of the configurations like 6700HQ and reserving the HK where the BGA is alr crap silicon, Limited RAM, Storage bays is already at mess they are more stooping to the dumpster levels of fallacy, They slapped a part of the heatsink fins for a faux look they could have just avoided it LOL.

I don't care whether they make the thermals and aesthetics good but this is not acceptable, the older machines were so well built and I recently learnt that the pre pascal machines were using carbon plastic hybrid and now they weigh more because of the return to the mg alloy for the chassis, I'm curious to know why did they do this, I'll wait for the silly explanation from the Noobzor.

I don't just understand why people are so blind to the reality and still support these kinds of business just for the plain looks. Look at the factory thermals lmao, MSI is a billion folds better than this crapshoot..

Get $HREKT AW :p

Ok while I don't entirely disagree with all you had to say about Alienware, I do have to disagree with you on msi being billion folds better. I found their marketing to be on the sketchy side at least with their Canadian skus. The Gt62vr states even on the box nvme yet many found out it's only a Sata. While the msi has 4 total ram slots it only has 1 m.2 where clearly they could have fit more. The difference between the GE and GT cases appears to be the amount of plastic used otherwise they look nearly identical in design.

All in all every manufacturer has their advantages and disadvantages but I certainly so far have not seen one that is infinitely better than another as in they all kind of suck in some way.

Is this a BIG joke bro @Mobius 1 ? What's next from the one time great company? Thank goodness that Mr. Azor @Alienware-Frank and Dellienware not started to design a brand new AW 18... A new AW 18 would most likely also have had the same fake heatsink design detail!! Imagine how matcho a new Aw 18R2 BGA model would looked out with a fake heatsink glued on it is real working heatsink!! +Rep for showing me this <Dellienware walk down the toilet...!!> Dellienwares svimming faster and faster way down in the mud now. After being flushed down with water + toilet paper down the toilet bowl...
    Have @Mr. Fox @TBoneSan @Phoenix @bloodhawk @hmscott @Cass-Olé @Diversion +++ seen similar from any so called high performing laptops?

I never thought in my wildest imagination that Alienware would sink so deep that they had to use a fake heatsink to show that their Alienware models had sufficient cooling!! Now I clearly understand what MR. Azor really said/meant... The new AW models had more copper and was heavier than its predecessor. It's great that the design is in focus... But when design comes ahead functionality. I will not say more

Edit. If you have to order a new heatsink to the new refreshed BGA models from Alienware... Will this additional <fake> heatsink had to be ordered separately or will it be taped on the real one? Can you order the real one and pay a lower price as you have the fake one from before?

Realy my reply above. What does it even matter. You worry about the chassis quality of your laptop where they cut corners in pretty much every part of the chassis itself.

To be fair the Clevo is designed with portability as an afterthought, it's meant to be used as a DTR and not moved much.

The AW on the other hand is more of a laptop, that you can more easily move around.

Different mentality of design impacts the final product a lot.

It's still incredibly clumsy... Use tape and attaching a fake heatsink. This should all been agreed in. This is like putting on a chromed exhaust tail on your car and believe that the car accelerates better :D I am absolutely sure that the intent was the same. Optical fraud. What do you think older hardcore power enthusiasts with the previous AW18 have said, if Dellienware did the same in *new released* Aw18?
Yeah, Mr. Azor was right in one thing... When he said that Dell has spent more metal on the new BGA models

If it is good adhesive it wouldnt matter in anyway. It will probably not help cooling a lot but it doesnt hurt it in any way.

It so over blown in my opinion.

If you just look at numbers then maybe MSI has some upgrade options extra you might like. But build quality? If you complain about a piece on the chassis just for making the machine look finished enjoy the overuse of adhesive on an MSI then.

Also what is wrong with the storage options? 2x nvme and 1x 2.5inch? What else do you need? Pretty much anyone out there that actually looked at the new models say its a well built machine. The pre-pascal machines by the way had a metal baseplate/frame on which the motherboard and hinges where mounted, the wohle palmrest assembly got a metal and copper plate under it, the screen lid is metal. It was already well built and now even more. Enjoy your jump to MSI, the only metal pieces there are just for optics on the outside.

Also take a look at the threads @iunlock created about these models. The thermals are excellent on these machines.

Seriously stop bashing like that AW, bash on real problems not some aesthetic, inoffensive, no-one-care stuff,...

do you really think the normal average customer will measure the heatsink length to judge the cooling ? SERIOUSLY ?

like omagad there's an extra inch of copper, I'm buying it !

And Thermals in the new Aw15R3 is similar ok like the BGA brother AW17R4?
Most part of thermals that I have seen from the 15" models, is far from ok..
And do you expect all buyers of these new Aw 15 models will re-paste? I think AW support most likely will work fully overtime with re-pasting long time ahead. I haven't seen similar thermal problems from any of the new BGA models from other brands. Fully throttle with package power around 40w duo to high temp is special. Or maybe you have seen totally different results than me? I don't say all the new AW 15 inches models have temp problems, but a very high numbers!!

@Mobius 1 When will your testing start?

MXM is definitely superior, but sadly it died due to high prices.

If people stop gouging for mxm parts I could definitely see it lasting longer into the future.

With all due respect, I don't believe that AW ever excelled at cooling so highlighting that the BGA machines are overheating compared to older socketed models is false claim.

Taking my model for example it had the ****tiest thermals compared to any laptop I ever had, even ASUSs did much better job.

Don't get me wrong, it is running as cool as a fridge now but check my sig for the amount of modding I had to do to the cooling system to make it run as such.

I would say with the thermal numbers hovering online on the new models, that AW is where it always has been, not better and most certainly not worse.

hotwell run hotter and more power compared to ivy or sandy even

the asus you talk of is BGA, all asus 4th gen ROG is BGA, they're all limited to 45w after 55 seconds and that's why the cooling system is "good," asus is cheating! @Papusan

    OCCT

temperatures hover around 68c when pulling 82w on average

keep in mind OCCT is worse case scenario, 1% of real life programs will actually pull that much power from CPU over an extended period of time

With a repaste these things run ice cold.

I'm very impressed by my machine and actually glad I chose it over asus or msi as my main laptop.

    Just saying.

Hitting 4.3GHz on air in a laptop 6820HK and not breaking an average of 71C and a max of 87C is amazing.

And being able to push the GPU to low end GTX 1080 levels (and come within 35% of my GTX 1080) is impressive for a laptop. It hits desktop notes with a laptop form factor and I love it for work and play!

Just rendered out some 4K footage the other day in a matter of a seconds so I love it!

    Well, that's just ridiculous. Really.

I'm wondering if this extra piece is there as a "filler" or something. Maybe 1080 will have a larger heat sink and without that extra piece there, one would have an ugly hole with nothing blocking it off. Giving benefit of doubt as much as I can, that would be the only logical explanation for such a silly thing. It almost has to be there for that, or to patch an engineering blunder. It would be bad if there was just an empty hole there with nothing blocking it off to keep insects, pixies and fairies from crawling into the chassis.

Do not forget Mr. Azor said that 1080 will not be launched for AW15 because this graphics card has much higher TDP than acceptable for 15 inch laptop. The most logical would be to create smaller ventilation holes. This gimick is more like decoration. Visually, it's to show a bigger heatsink grill and biggeer cooling capacity than what the reality is. Still fake, no matter how you turn and look at this :D

    Edit. 2x re-paste and still problems http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...16-owners-lounge.797458/page-42#post-10379007

An MXM machine right now is no better than a bga in terms of needing to / being forced to upgrade the system.

After Kaby lake, then what? That's why sell it while you can. Both mxm and bga.

Mxm is dead. That's why it'd be foolish for me to bash on bga (which isn't something that I'm caught up with anyway), but you get the point.

The new cooling system in ratio to its thinness is actually leaps above anything in the past.

It has to be looked at from all angels and perspective. Not just on pure cooling alone.

    Nice Temps.

Well said and I agree. Also, on the current 1070 heat sink there is clearly room for another heat pipe, which I assume will be for the 1080.

Well @Mobius 1 just got a 30C drop in Temp with the 15R3 after a repaste so is that your definition of fake?

That extra piece is obviously a space holder.

It looks like all new AW models need Liquid metal with stock clock or if you overclocking a bit/slightly...
Normal thermal paste is probably not enough. Remember not everyone dares / use liquid metal.
2x re-paste with ok thermal paste and still problems http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...16-owners-lounge.797458/page-42#post-10379007
So Mr. Azor said wrong about AW15 and 1080?

Not a good source of information. Everything said is carefully crafted to sound good for marketing purposes. Like political campaign rhetoric, take it with a grain of salt. We enthusiasts don't use the same playbook. Our expectations and standards are totally different. If he honestly believes BGA is the way to go and using desktop CPUs in notebooks doesn't work right, there is no basis for hope in his brand... a lost cause.

When are salesman ever honest? It is a shame that there exist so many issues due to cheap thermal paste. Shame on Dell and anyone there making bold claims that are proving itself over and over and over again to be false.

As the saying goes, "The proof is in the pudding..."

True, not everyone will opt for liquid magic, but at the same time it is a given that with the new gen hardware no matter how good the cooling system is, without proper heat transfer the whole thing is a waste of effort. After all that R&D and money spent, why would they go cheap on thermal paste right? Maybe because toothpaste is cheaper.

The new AW's actual cooling system is superb. If it wasn't I'd the first to call that out with no shame....let the truth be told. :) I'll call it like it is...

Precisely. All marketing mumbo jumbo, but aside to Azor what's even more sad are those who fall for it with expecting all the promises to be met upon receiving the machine. At least some of us know going into it that we'd be seeing toothpaste.

I know we all have very different tolerances levels for Dell and with good reason in respect to the root of the cause, but as for me personally, if it wasn't for the unlocked CPU, I would not invest in one....sure I'll bench anything, but I would not even buy it for a family member to be honest. Might as well buy the new MBP or Surface Book because I personally would not be stuck with a machine claiming to be a "powerful," gaming laptop with a 6700HQ.

Yeah, I hear you. I understand that some people want thinner and lighter. I totally get that, but they're gimping a bunch of stuff, cutting corners, and not really delivering on the thin and light. I actually prefer big and heavy, and for the weight of these new machines they should be more potent than they are. If my skinnier and lighter P750ZM can manage a 4790K blast furnace, there's no reason whatsoever that an Alienware 15 (or 17) can't do better with a cooler and less power hungry 6700K. The Eurocom Tornado F5 is an even better example of what Alienware should be doing. Granted, it's nowhere nearly as messed up on the order of magnitude as the castrated Acer BGA behemoth, but still... they need to choose hot or cold, because lots of folks think lukewarm is nasty. I don't think they (Alienware) even realize they are lukewarm. They should embrace their roots, get back to basics, and stop chasing juvenile fads.

Hmmm... seems like I have read that lukewarm analogy somewhere before.

I know your works. You are neither cold nor hot. I wish that you were either cold or hot. So because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I'm about to spit you out of my mouth. After all, you say, ‘I'm rich, and I've grown wealthy, and I don't need a thing.' You don't realize that you are miserable, pathetic, poor, blind, and naked.

There... fixed that for you. The high prices are a symptom of a much deeper and more sinister problem. Sockets and slots means smart people are able to upgrade for a fraction of the cost of a new system. As most of us savvy folks know, a totally unlocked desktop processor or mobile Extreme can match or best 3 or 4 generations of the best consumer Core i processors. The GPU is where the greatest hype, excitement and needs are, and by yanking the rug out from under us, their planned obsolescence agenda is easier to execute. If you cannot upgrade from a Mickey Mouse consumer mobile CPU to a nice second-hand XM purchased dirt cheap on eBay and drop in the latest GPU, you're basically screwed on both counts. Silly boys are always going to spend lots more on new machines rather than upgrade at least once for pennies on the dollar. They've made it so that can't happen and it's on purpose.

Truly liquid metal or bust, thogh that takes some skill to apply. Not for the average user.

I believe eurocom said that the practice from nvidia is to not drop prices on old gpu tech, so if an mxm gpu is X dollars on 2016 it'll continue to be sold without depreciation in the future even with new gpu arch that has launched.

Edit: same thing with bare dies for bga mobos

Agreed... or the average OEM, which employs below average assembly line workers that don't give a rat's ass if it works right once it goes in the box.

Yes... that's greed on a grand scale. And, if the prices stay insanely high for older tech, this facilitates their agenda with BGA. We've all complained about expensive MXM upgrades, but it never stopped us because the end result was you had a machine that was as good, or even better in some cases, than the latest model for 40 to 70% less money than a new model. While $700+ for a 980M was retarded. $1200 for an aftermarket 1080 mobile makes retarded look like a compliment. Prices now are out of scope with value and that feeds the myth that buying a new machine is more cost effective. Even if it is not more cost effective, it doesn't make $1200 any less stupid.

@Mr. Fox why intel dont sell the 6700k as soldered ?? if you remove the metal plate above your desktop cpu, looks the same as a bga ...
