I've been noticing that after my AW goes to screen saver mode (after 30 minutes), when I try to wake it, the screen is blank and it does not wake from moving my mouse or pressing a key....

Lately, I've been having to manually hard shut down by long pressing the power button...maybe I'm haunted by the old spinners mentality, but I don't like having to shut down the computer this way. (...though my SSD light was not blinking / no activity...but still....)... any harm in hard shut downs?

Any ideas on what may be causing this?

Maybe your overclocks? I had weird wake up issues when I for example undervolted too much while the laptop still passed XTU stresstests.

I don't think it's the OC, I think it goes back to the Intel GFX issue.

For me this got so bad that I disabled screen saver completely, and any form of sleep mode or hybernate. These steps helped, but what I've noticed most of all is that the longer the computer is "up", the LESS likely it is to throw a black screen. Almost all the episodes are within a few hours of starting up, and it has NEVER occured after say three or four days of up time.

One reason I piont the finger at the GFX is that I NEVER had this issue until the moment my browser freeze issue got fixed by a partial windows update (.net stuff). Once that stopped, this started.

Hmmm...interesting....I usually keep my AW on all the time, sometimes going days without ever shutting it down, unless I'm messing with the OC in BIOS..

Note: After I did my fresh install of Windows 8.1 Pro onto the m.2, I have (purposely) never applied any updates, except maybe one .net Framework that I needed for one of my programs. I'm a bit of a privacy/security junkie and M$ updates have always been nothing, but intrusive and communist with little to no gain...ie...more harm than good. So if it is some kind of an update issue, I'm okay with that and will just leave the screen saver turned off. I use this particular AW just for gaming and editing so it's not my main rig anyway.

Regarding the hard shut downs by pressing the power button...as long as the SSD/HD light is not flashing it shouldn't cause any harm eh? Gosh...it still makes me feel uncomfortable doing those hard shut downs....

Perhaps this is one of those scenarios (screen saver blank screen issue) to support why one should not use Samsung Magician / Intel Rapid etc...because in the invent of transferring a large file and if the screen saver turns on (assuming one has it set to a few minutes before activating)....if the computer does go blank and you have to hard shut down....all that data stored in the RAM for transfer would be permanently lost. Might seem extreme, but it's a real possibility.

Anyhow...bummer....the blank screen issue for me tend to occur in the mornings after I wake up....

Sorry for the necro, I started noticing this issue recently on my 17R4. When I open the lid, which wakes the PC, the screen stays blank but everything else seems to be functioning. I have to press the power button to make it go to sleep and then press it again to wake it up for the screen to turn on.

Some kind of issue with going to sleep perhaps? I usually press the power button and close the lid in the evening. But the issue doesn't always happen.

Mine did the same thing when I left it idle, NOT closed the lid but left it idle. However I've found that if you leave tobii on with the *look at logo to wake up* setting enabled it will turn on that way, Other than that power button holding is the only way to get it to cut back on.

Have you disabled screensaver and Rapid Storage driver power save mode? I disabled screensaver because i noticed the same issue and I thought legacy code was the issue.

I have exactly the same issue, funny enough my mouse cursor is visible but screen (other than the cursor) stays black. Doesn't matter if I close the lid or if I keep open but idle into sleep mode. This morning was the first time it happend that my Tobii was still working (usually it doesn't come online), but still it didn't log into windows. Funny enough, it was fine about a month ago. I think either a windows or drivers update screwed something up. Alienware Update kept trying to install bluetooth drivers and failing. Tobii was also updated, not sure about what else.

I tried disabling the Rapid Storage driver power save mode, didn't help. And I don't think I actually have a screensaver enabled. Also disabling Fast Start didn't help, disabling Hybernation didn't help. If it continues I might just reinstall windows, see if that fixes the issue.
