Hi Guys
Bought the below machine with 1 year warranty as i was unsure if i was going to keep it or not. Didn't really know dell had this policy where they ask for 700$ instead of 240$ to extend to 3 year warranty, after point of sale, and there is nothing they can do whatsoever regarding that for pro support - even telling them you're going to send the PC back in yields nothing, they say ok great then you can reorder!
So keep this in mind for new buyers this is on case where the upsell during point of sale really is the better deal!
I'm now abroad from the US with the machine, and to be honest threatening them to send the machine back in 1.) was bluffing and 2.) didnt give me any result
Am i cooked here, will i have to pay 350$/year to keep this warranty going as my only option for having (foolishly) only purchased 1 year?
I mean at 700$.. that is 1/2 of the price i paid for the machine. Lol. So i could just buy myself the same thing next christmas from the outlet at that rate.
Can i ask the community if they have managed to get a actually decent price ever on warranty extension for these alienwares or am i looking at a 700$ burn after having gotten a great deal otherwise
Thanks.

Usually, they have different options for extending warranty. The most expensive is reserved for warranty that covers the most.
When I extended the warranty of my laptop, I was given multiple options. No way to discount, but I chose the warranty that fit my needs. Ended up being $400 for 2 more years of warranty (total amount of years = 3 since I didn't extend warranty at time of purchase) instead of something closer to $600. I would ask for multiple options to see if you can get a cheaper warranty cost (but of course, it covers less things).
Also, warranty extension is always cheapest at the time of purchase. -
Will have to keep fingers crossed that no issues come up after 1 year. Just ordered a cooling pad.
Does Dell never do promotions throughout the year on warranty extension? -
Near the end of your warranty period, Dell will entice you to extend or upgrade the warranty by offering a $50 to $75 (or whatever currency) eGift card depending on how much you spend (and since it's an Alienware, you guaranteed the $75). That's about all I know. There may be a promotion, but I just don't know when.
You can request a warranty extension through Dell's Support Site and just communicate through chat or email, which I think is best since you have all the options and their prices in front of you. Just think about the extension over the course of the initial warranty period. -
Lesson learned, max out the warranty at point of sale! damn!Last edited: Jan 14, 2016 -
I also got a 1 year and was thinking of extending it... bummer to hear I'll have to make that decision myself too.

I've locked this cooling pad in to keep her cool in the meantime haha -
What about square trade? Surely getting a 3 year plan from them can't be 700 bucks for a 2k computer right?
-
square trade is 299... i may bite that one, includes insurance too
edit : 389$ with no excess for 3 year plan.. hmm.. maybe i'll wait this one out..
Part of the dell warranty allure is dealing directly with dell.. i have 15 days to think baout it. -
Call back again - these price points are negotiable. I picked up an extra 2 year onsite with premium support ( 3 year total) for $199 after i purchased an Alienware 15 r2 from the outlet. They started out at over 300 for the initial price.

Thanks for the update hodge! Was worried it was a business rule to gouge your loyal customers on something they might not even use.
-
Customer care refers you to tech support
Parts and service refer you to tech support
Tech support all quote 700$
Ill hand them 200$ right now if they'll extend me -
-
I PM'd hodge for more details so I can give it a try myself. Or maybe they'll explain it in this thread, that works too.
-
Allure? Dealing directly with Dell? Bwaaahahahahahahaha.....good one! -
Oh, another thing I should've added to my squaretrade comment is that squaretrade warranty starts the same time the original warranty starts. So if you bought the AW with 1 year and you buy a 2 year squaretrade warranty, your total warranty coverage is 2 years. Haven't confirmed with squaretrade directly but I've read quite a few people mentioning that. So....yea, warranties are very expensive non-tangible products.

I have bought a laptop cooler and will hope to find any issues up front with the machines ( so far i've found a few).
I dont think i'll cough up for 400$ for square trade- rather put that towards a new machine in 2016 / 2017 if this one actually does bite the bullet considering i paid 1400$ for it! -
One thing to note is that all outlet Alienware laptops come with 1 year of premium support. This is not included on the new Alienware laptops unless you add it. I am not sure if this was part of the reason for the lower price on my warranty extension.
-
Hmm, I picked the highest tier Alienware 17 so premium was already included in the price. Strange how certain reps are super helpful and others suck. Don't they put notes in your account every time you call?
-
Don't you guys use credit card for your laptop purchases? That's an additional 1 year there.
-
This has me thinking now....should I call back and try to extend my warranty for a good deal? Hmmmm.....
I'm one to not usually fall for the warranty trap, but considering the nature of our beasts (laptops) I'm willing to dish out a few hundred for the sake of having a peace of mind.
I currently have the 1 year premium warranty on it now...

If you extended after point of sale and negotiated down can you please advise where you did this (tech support?)

You gota use some social engineering skills.. The warranty extension guys are sales guys.
What would you do if your job was to get people to pay the most and you got a bigger commission off a higher sale?
I got my two year extension on my AW15R1 nine months after purchase and it was like $280 or something.
I got my two year extension on my AW14 11 months after purchase and it was $199.
Both situations they tried to offer me ones that were like $700 and $890.. just crazy numbers.
I was just persistent and told them I have been offered less and that it was crazy, yada yada yada.
Eventually I spoke with someone that offered me a much much less warranty.
You get the warranty from the warranty extension team. Fill out the thing on the web site and they will email you. Then you have them call you..
Dont be afraid to ask for a supervisor etc.iunlock likes this. -
