So I want to upgrade my R2 with the 960M. Everybody tells me current generation alienware laptops need repasting. What is the sentiment around this forum about buying through resellers like HiDevolution? Anybody here with any experience? What is the typical wait time? weeks or months?

I have recently been into competitive FPS gaming and I was wondering if I should get the 120hz Alienware 15? Some people tell me I'm not going to experience that much difference? Thoughts? Comments? I appreciate the input!

Which R2 do you have exactly?

As far as I know as well, the current gen Alienwares (and previous) all have overheating issues mainly on the CPU. You can sort it with a repaste and an undervolt, but even if you do the cooling system is still inadequate imo.. I'd wait until Alienware get their act togeather (if they ever do) before buying anything from them. There should be new Intel and AMD CPUs coming out next year so hopefully a lot of manufacturers will be giving their designs a refresh.

I got the one with the 960M and the dual core processor. It had to be serviced twice. Internals has been replaced twice but the cool thing is they HAVE been replaced and it's still going! like a vampire..

I mean I can wait if that makes more sense but one thing I learned from this forum is that you can always wait.

    1. Build a desktop if you want to be really competitive. With the Alienware cost, it will get you a far better unit.
    2. Upgrade your R2. I have an R1 that I’m upgrading, but the R2 has better upgrade paths.
    3. Buy a non-Dell/Alienware unit.
If you don’t have the time, patience, and money willing to commit to fixing the temperature issues of the new Alienware units, then you should look into alternatives. The issues are mostly a design/hardware problem which is why it can be tedious if you don't have the experience.

Man! that sucks to hear. So even the dell outlet laptops wouldn't be free of these problems if the issues are in the design of the laptop. What non-alienware pure gaming laptop would you recommend? I think if I can't get OLED, I would rather have 120hz screen for sure.

Initially, I went with an Alienware 15 R3 because of the interest-free monthly payment. I did the best I could to improve the temperature problems, but it wasn’t worth it for me in the end.

I’ve since returned it and bought a new one from HIDevolution. You can see my units on my signature.

Also, you should definitely get the low reaction time. Same reason why I always opted for the 5ms-120Hz monitors. Those are the best options that I could select from for gaming.
