I have been searching for a replacement laptop for my ASUS G751 970M because I want to have a better graphical performance with my FPS and Driving Simulation games(surround).

My question is, should I just wait for an new generation refresh or should I go ahead and buy one now.

The main point driving me to buy this years generation is because of the Graphics Amplifier (Futureproof), I want to buy a GTX 980Ti along with it (i expect a driver update to make this compatible in the future).

The main point stopping me from making this purchase is the throttling, fan table problem, supplied power adapter,(I am based in Qatar now, so if this 180 power supply wont cut it, theres no way for me to acquire a 240 PS).

Your listed "con" opens a big can of worms.

There is no guarantee that the refreshed models (After the current 2015 ones) will or will not have throttling or fan profile issues.

Also the 180W appears to be adequate for models with the NVIDIA GTX 970m GPU.

So that's six of one a half dozen of the other. Not a really good choice either way.

That makes me hesitant to want to drop the money. So I would split the decision. Wait until the new models are announced or come out. At that point you will be better informed (if you should try for an existing 2015 model or try for the new model).

Well, I guess there is no "no way for me to acquire a 240 PS" to the owner of the following:

    Alienware M17x-R4|i7-3820QM|17.3" 1920x1080 3D 120 Hz|8 GB 1866Mhz|GTX 680M|256 GB SSD Samsung 830 & 750GB 7200 HDD|Killer™ 1103|Slot-Load Blu-ray

    MacBook Pro|i7 2.7GHz Quad-Core|15.4" 2880x1800 Retina IPS|16 GB 1600Mhz|GT650|512 GB SSD

    Apple New iPad|Dual Core CPU|9.7" Retina Display 2048×1536|4G|1 GB Ram|64GB Storage ;)

I think they sell the 240w psu on ebay and more than one should accept int. shipping...

As for the laptop itself, if you want to use the graphics amp anyways then the 970m is the way to go, for me, the slight gain in fps versus the $300 dollars more expensive 980m version is not worth the extra cash.

And to answer the original question, yes, I think you should buy it now, with the delay on intel processors this year I think there will be also a delay in the next generation of alienware hardware.
