    I have the 17r4 with 4k uhd tobii 60hz gtx1080

If I get an external monitor that has a 120hz gsync would it work and would I be able to pay games in 3d also

Hi there, I checked with @DeeX for you as I thought not and that's the case I'm afraid. I believe the mobo or GPU needs to have the hardware to support G-Sync, it's not just software, the GPU needs a direct link to the display which bypasses most of the motherboard I believe (this is the reason you can't shut off a G-Sync GPU from OS or keyboard shortcut to just use the iGPU for those wondering about optimus functionality/support).

Deex also mentioned that usually G-Sync needs a display port as well, HDMI isn't enough

Thanks for checking on that I do have a gtx1080 in a graphics amplifier if I would hook that up and run to the monitor would that work it does have 3 display ports trying to do 3d some how

Was going to just sell the gtx1080 and graphics amplifier but if it works I will keep it

Bought the amp and gtx1080 when I had my old 17r4 that had gtx1070 but keep on over heating so Dell sent me this new 17r4 with the gtx1080 not sure what to do with this gtx1080 and amplifier

Well, through the AMP GYSNC might work on your monitor.

    Oh that's bad news...
@Pete Light, @DeeX, So you are saying that if I buy a g-sync monitor and hook it up to my display port, g-sync won't work? (because that was my next buy..)

if you're on dedicated GPU mode then using an external g-sync monitor will have g-sync feature (if plugged into displayport)

Ah yeah from amp to monitor is ok with a display port for G-Sync. Just not direct from R4.
I'd well that amp and 1080, virtually no difference between that and the notebook 1080, they are really strong in the R4...

That's confusing sorry I should have been more precise :
If I am connecting a g-sync display directly into my AW 17r4s display port, g-sync won't work?

g-sync will work on an external display regardless of the laptop's internal display

Yes i had an early r4 for a while with the FHD and 1070 no g sync on the internal but when hooked up to acer predator g-sync monitor it worked fine using the DP out from the r4.
