All right? I'm new here in the forum, my first post to be exact. I would love someone could help me solve the following situation. How many here have an Alienware 15 4710hq i7 gtx 980m with a psu of 180w (stock) that obviously as we have found is not enough. In an attempt to improve the situation I think I ended up buying a source of 330w (delta) that is not natively compatible with this model. Follow the link: http://www.ebay.com/itm/321945607426
Is there any way to make this work on my psu alienware? I have to remove the ID chip 180w psu of this and put the 330w?

Please I need your help! :)

    Regards

    Vitor Hugo

Hmm, unless Alienware later did something on purpose to make it not work, the 330W AC adapter should work fine for the 17 (Ranger), 17R2, 15 and 13. I have used a 330W adapter with the first generation all of those models and it worked fine. It also works fine for the Alienware 14. What happens when you try to use it now?

    Hi Mr. Fox,

Thank you for responding so quickly. When I turn on the Alienware already I get a BIOS message saying that he did not recognize the power supply. When I enter the BIOS SETUP of which there appears the power supply (as is marked as unknown). So far so good, except that when I boot up windows is clearly visible that the computer is very slow. I put a benchmark within the GTA and the average was 17fps. With the original power supply 180w average is above 50fps. It is as if the notebook was without psu and power saving mode, everything is very slow. Sorry for my Inglês, I'm using google to help me :).

You're welcome. I'm sad to hear that is happening.

Either a BIOS/EC update since the time I was able to use it has broken the functionality, which would be very sad and evil on their part, or the AC adapter you bought is no good.

Perhaps someone with a machine like yours (or the other ones mentioned) is using a 330W AC adapter and can chime in on whether they broke it or maybe you got a bad AC adapter.

That's the thing, bro. You should not need to. That was only the older machines. What we need is for others to reply to your thread to confirm they are still using their 330W AC adapters with machines like yours, or if not whether Alienware did something to interfere with using it later on, like in a BIOS/EC udpate.

Try buying a right angle adapter and break the center pin off the adapter. This way the laptop won't charge, but should eliminate ID conflict.

Or, try a 240W adapter which should be completely ok :)

Or this. The 240w is a safer bet and I don't think you would need more than that.

You can request it free from dell I believe, or from a forum rep like him.

Not relevant really to your situation, but I have a DELL 330w that I was using on my R3 and it was working just fine. Sounds like you might have a bad power supply. Be careful.

Another data point. My 15r2 works fine with my 330W brick.
