My Alienware 17 (GTX 1070 / 6700HQ) is approaching the 2 year old mark (come November 2018). I bought this rig on Fri, Nov 4, 2016 (random Best Buy purchase) and at the time? I purchased a 3 year extended warranty ... but so far so good ... never a throttle instance on either GPU or CPU ... no hardware failures ... everything still perfect ... and the rig plays anything and everything like a boss, still today, at 1080p resolutions ...

So minus any quibbling issues of temps and what not ... has anybody had any REAL serious issues with their AW17 rigs purchased about the same time as mine? I only use the AW17 for 1080p gaming as I reserve 1440p/4K gaming for my desktop machine ... and I'm hoping this laptop goes way beyond my three year forecast ...

Not sure if I'd be able to replicate this perfect experience, overclockable 100hz IPS screen and all, if I had to purchase again or have this one replaced via the warranty ...

    Such a fine machine ...

Your a lucky customer in a slew of QC issues since the Echo lineup in 2014/2015.

Its almost more appropriate to ask, who hasnt had issues on the Alienwares of late.

But its always nice to see someone is happy with their laptop.

OCN looking any better of late or is it still a work in progress?

    6820HK + 1070 15R3 bough in October 2016 here:

In its first year i had :
    • 2 Mother-Boards swap
    • 1 wireless card and antenna
    • 1 1080 IPS screen (Tech broke it)
    • 2 heatsinks
And still have core temps diffs, so i gave-up on OCing its CPU and won't ask for DELL's help anymore.
I decided to take care of it myself and didn't extend the 1 year warranty. Parts are cheap in China.

Lately, the lid Logo and the bezel Brand's lights lost 90% of the blue. So purple looks pink and blue looks faint blue.
I checked and replugged the cable in the back: Nothing changed.

    Very disapointing.

This is an interesting read about the reliability and support https://www.notebookcheck.net/Noteb...Who-has-the-best-laptop-service.299092.0.html

Dell aint the best but certainly not the worst.

DIdnt you break the wireless antella while replacing the card? Cant really blame Dell for that right?

The wireless card connector broke when i removed it with tweezers for a mandatory day-one repast, the connector and parts of its circuit track came off and stayed on the antenna's cable.
You can blame me for removing it (and trying to understand and fix an Out-of-the-Box thermal throttling on a 2K $ laptop).
I can blame the wireless card for being poorly made.

The 2nd tech came with a new wireless card and a new cable, he couldn't remove the connector form the old one. Even @iunlock had a hard time with some of those.
The tech broke the screen while trying to change the antenna. This AW's disassembly is full of booby trap !

Strange the antenna isnt even supposed to be disassembled from the screen....they need to replace the whole screenlid for that.

It sucks but yeah if done correctly the connector would not break (have disconnected those cables probably about 20 times on killer cards).

I was busy (workplace) after he tried to extract the connector, maybe he changed the lid with. When i was back he had finished and was about to leave.
I disconnected wireless card's antenna before and after too, it never broke like this one.
Of course i'm more cautious with the AW's one now.

The technicians deifnitely can be a mixed bag, in my case a simple battery change caused a cycle where the technician ruined my laptop and it couldnt be fixed anymore after multiple tries. Receive an upgrade because of that from R1 to R2.

OCN? I'm assuming you mean Overclock.net? It's great ... the new staff is working through the forum software update still but the content is there and for me, that's all that is important. I've been a daily user there for well over a decade ... a great resource for anybody in to overclocking and computing in general.

How did you know I was on OCN, BTW?[/QUOTE]

I have the same LG panel in my rig ... I don't game on it much but when I do? I marvel. Such a great IPS panel and overclocked to 100hz? It's pretty dreamy. I use my AW17 at work with an external monitor ... a 144hz TN 24" Asus ... but if I EVER have to do any sort of photo/graphic work? I always switch back to the AW17 LG IPS panel ... colors to die for in comparison to the Asus desktop monitor ...

Ive been there near a decade as well, I took a hiatus after their last botched update. Ill probably wait another 6 months before I head back there.

We've had a few conversations here and there on that forum over the span of that time :)

Yeah very nice Panel :) but i ordered my aw17r5 with the 1440p 120hz panel. I wasnt able to get the GTX 1080+i9 8950HK together with the 1080p IPs... and then its still lottery to get the 100hz LG or 62Hz noname crap...
