I got alienware m15 r2 with i7 9750h and rtx 2080 maxq on his way to me. Im wondering how much performance will i gain if i add an alienware graphics amplifier with rtx 2080 connected to an external display ? Will it run close to desktop performance of an rtx 2080? i understand that the rtx 2080 maxq in the alienware m15 r2 runs close to an rtx 2070 desktop performance

I find the performance of the 2080 Max Q in games to be around 2070 and 1080 desktop cards. Synthetic benchmarks are quite different though, but in game FPS right in line.

For the money required to buy a 2080 and AGA I think you will be very disappointed in the performance differences. AGA doesn’t bring you 100% of the card performance due to bandwidth limitations so you won’t get full 2080 performance bringing you down to little return on your investment.

    What games do you play?

Battlefield V, witcher 3, world of warcraft, ghost reckon breaking point, red dead redemption 2 when it comes out.
Had the alienware 51m which was a beast but had an issue with the display and was heavy to travel with, so decided to go with the m15 r2.

Don't have any of those to test, but here's a look at Division 2 performance I did to decide what settings to use on my external monitor S3220DGF (Dell 165HZ). I still can't decide between 1080P on high (which happens to be faster than the 2070 desktop card by 4.4% and less than 5% behind the 2080 desktop card) or 1440P on high which is 1.2% slower than a 2070 desktop card.. Results for other cards pulled from here https://www.tweaktown.com/articles/8944/division-benchmarked-20-graphics-cards-tested/index.html

I know results vary widely by game, but this is my favorite game and the only one I did this in depth look at. The 2080 MQ can OC a little bit, but I didn't get more than a couple frames here and there, nothing substantial.

When running on the laptop itself (4K OLED) I run 1080P Ultra since I'm limited to 60Hz / FPS anyway and it looks gorgeous.

thanks, looks like impressive performance for the size, im guessing 4k playing the division 2 etc is out of the question even with Egpu with an rtx 2080

Unless you play lower settings 4K isn’t quite there yet. Even a desktop 2080 is below 60 FPS on Ultra or High settings. Division 2 needs to be played with high quality graphics!

this is great info thank you. I too have the oled w the 2080 max q and the i7. Are you getting these scores w hdr enabled on the oled or is this with hdr disabled? Division 2 is my primary game as well. I really enjoy the lighting the hdr in division offers but I take a serious performance hit when enabling it. I’m curious of your experience with division 2 and hdr. Thanks much!
