Alienware R4 17 Burnt Motherboard Chip

Hey there, everyone! This is my first official post here, and I hope to become a regular member of the community here.

However, I digress. Onto what I wanted to ask...

So, I recently was given an Alienware R4 17 for free (on the known condition that it wasn't working) and upon opening her up and doing some searching, I found the issue.

One of the chips labeled BAA618 or 8AA618 (its one or the other), the little resistor, and the area between them on the actual motherboard were burned pretty badly - bad enough that a little less than half of the chip was gone and that the spot on the motherboard had a small amount of depth.

Now, I like to consider myself decently savvy in regards to computers. Laptops are a newer concept to me, but I've been building and servicing desktops for almost 15 years now.

What are the chances that this is fixable? The warranty has since expired last year, and I don't have a ton of capital to throw at it. And, if not viable, is there any salvage value or chances I could sell it on eBay as an as-is broken item for somebody else to worry about?

Welp, You could check out some Louis Rossman videos and try to fix the components. For someone with even some moderate soldiering skills, it's probably fixable. It would take some determination, practice, and some research. You sound like the type that could do it. Selling it could land a an ok amount of money compared to a non bga board. However since its damages it will take a giant hit. Since these boards have bha GPU and CPU, they are expensive to begin with. I personally would see if I could find a broken one of these boards on Ebay and use it as a donor board to get the components. Or try and buy them from a parts supplier. Good luck to you.

I appreciate the advice. I'm just having the hardest time finding that particular chip.

I'm starting to think that I may just have to invest in another broken R4 17 motherboard and salvage the needed parts.

This is going to prove both challenging and fun, I feel.

You can the SMD replaced if you check using multimeter with value set to pico or nano or micro. Some manufacturers use micro or nano or pico with higher values say 1000pF etc..

When it is plugged in, does the power LED of your adaptor stays on after you plug in the laptop?

 

i had my old m11x and 14x, which had some similiar issues with this kinda small chips broken, i fixed it by taking it to chip level repairing shops, in my country i found lots of shop who does it for cheap price, but it takes time, since they have to figure out the comp ID and the availability of those from china, mostly they buy supplies from china.. if you still have warranty, my best advice is to get a new motherboard..
