Hello users.
After 2 days of gaming, my Alienware 17 R2 is burnt out.
Despite taking steps to ensure good ventilation and clear space on a hard desk for fans the system overheated.
Upon comparing the bottom of the laptop with my aging M14x R1 I noticed the fans are actually almost 50% blocked by the solid bottom panel with mesh only covering the other portion.
This is not the case on my M14x and something I'm incredibly disappointed by.
How did this get past the design team. They have had years to refine the product line.

What do you mean by burnt out? Is your laptop dead?
-
Yes.....after a record pathetic 2 days usage.
-
How dead is it? Will it not turn on? Will it post to BIOS? What happened?
-
Dead as in completely gone.
Won't boot up at all. Refuses to boot even to bios.
I was gaming through the battlefield 4 campaign over the course of 2 days (Which despite the cheesy character dialogue and occasional AI pathfinding bug, has some amazing scenes and is very good).
Went to close the application and the computer made a violent click noise and shut off abruptly.
The whole bottom half of the laptop was burning hot to the touch even though it was on a hard clear surface (laptop tray) and in a well ventilated area.
What's really bothering me about this is I chose the 970m over the 980m series because I wanted a cooler running system and one with the smaller 180w adapter for travel.
I was very fond of the sleeker profile and the screen was amazing.
Thoroughly enjoyed BF4 and the laptop in general, I actually sold my M18x R1 to fund this.
Looking to be a grave mistake....iPhantomhives likes this. -

I'd say that problem is with power section. CPU and GPU should be safe with internal safe logic. They should switch itself off with too high temps. Maybe something was bad assembled

Well I hope they send you out a replacement that works!
I really like my 15 as well, the screen is great, I have the Samsung 1080p panel and keyboard temps are acceptable on BIOS A00.
I too went with the 970M hoping for a cooler system and smaller power brick. But I ended up with the 240W adapter in the end.
I get thermal throttling on the CPU when using the 180W and no themal throttling when I use the 240W....bizarre! -
Edit: double post!
