I am looking to buy an alienware 17 and was wondering if the UHD screen is worth the 300 dollar upgrade. I plan on getting the 980m with 8gb of vram, and use it mostly for gaming. Should I get the FHD or UHD screen?

if you manage to bag the 8gb 980m then the 4k screen has gotta be worth it....... on my 4gb 980m im pretty much maxing out the VRAM on the FHD now...let alone future releases

and if you wanna run a much bigger and better external screen the extra VRAM is a must... wish i had the 8gb version

Maxing out your 4GB on the 980M? Which games or applications are you running to be scratching the ceiling? I've just bought another 17" R3 w/ the 4GB 980M (UHD version as well) for my brother and he has a dual 4K monitor set up. I was under the impression that the 4GB 980M would be enough??

    This has me thinking now....hhmmm.....

well..... 2 games off the top of my head 'crysis 3' and 'Batman AK' .... these both overrun the 4gb VRAM if i take their setting right up. im sure there will be more, i bet 'Fallout 4' would do it too....

Gotcha.....wow....didn't know the 4GB 980M would be taxed anytime soon....

I've asked around about this and most folks were saying how the 4GB 908M is sufficient etc...so I had thought it was pretty safe..aka..future proof for the most part.

For 1080P gaming, which most are 4GB is just fine. If you plan to game at 4K then you will be seeing the limits of 4GB.

Even if you do get the 8GB you will still possibly be hitting Fram limits in many games as 4K are a LOT of pixels to push. I'm sure the 8GB may help some, but I don't know if it will be enough to really notice without benchmarks or just watching your framerate the whole time. I just ordered the 4K with 4GB RAM and I'm not worried at all.

I imagine you'll be dropping below 60 before you're maxing out the 4gb in 4k. Not like you're sporting a titan X that can brute force its way through the ultra settings. Then again I haven't received my AW17 yet so this is all speculation.

For gaming on/at 4k, not going to happen nicely. But gaming while at 4k but rendering 50%/1080p is great. And for everything other than gaming, I LOVE my 4k screen. Vibrant, bright, accurate, perfect.

I don't game much, I edit photos, movies, and CAD work. But I spent $300 on UHD and stayed with the 970m, while same price I could've went 980m and 1080p. No regrets.

Yeah for gaming I just plan on bumping the resolution down to 1080p. I'm just wondering which screen is better quality because I've seen some people say the FHD is not bright enough but the UHD screen is a yellow tint. I'm just wondering which would be a better choice for gaming.

Can't say anything for FHD as the only panel I've ever had was msi gt70 which sucked. But my Lenovo laptops are 3k which are crisp but lacking, Alienware 4k is crisp but just pops, and brightness I never have over 50%, battery I usually have at like 30%, and at night I have it on battery and 0%.

The 4k is beautiful, I'm staring at it now and don't see any discoloration at all.

Sorry, talk talk notifications weren't working for me.

Converting movies all depends on program used. Aimer soft vs Winx vs handbrake vs adobe media encoder ALL provide different times. All depends on exact original file type and setting vs new as well. Any and all files for converting I find aimer soft to be THE leader, I paid like $30 or so idk, but especially a que of converts. It's the only program to use 100% of all cores. But it really seems to allow 2 cores 4 thread per movie, unless it's a que then allows 8 at a time. Big que are saved for my desktop with i7 5930k 4.3ghz 6 core 12 thread. Single movie laptop vs desktop, maybe 30-60 seconds faster on desktop. So minimal difference, it's only multiple movies at once that more power truly comes into effect.

As for direct answer, it really depends. Some mkv to mp4 takes 3-5 min (800mb). Sometimes a 2gb mvk to 1gb mp4 takes 20 min.

To help you, essentially any quad core i7 with 8gb minimal 16gb preferred, that supports h.264 acceleration (I think that's it). But anything haswell/broadwell/skylark would suffice.

Main benefits of going with Alienware are build is solid, cooling is great absolutely no throttling or lack of turbo, great battery life. If it's only converting and movie editing, go 6700 970m get 16gbram and m.2 boot, 1tb 2.5 data storage. Ssd is where you'll benefit, 980m does somewhat but ssd is where you'll notice it more.

Well my main reason for this laptop is for the price 1600 for a laptop as new in ebay....the other 2 options msi titan gt80s sli or clevo P870DM-G runs over 2500.... and the 4k looks gorgeous.

Np, do note that file types and the amount of movies also dictate resources used. I always convert to mp4 from hvak and avi, 1 movie usually 50% cpu, 2 usually 100% sometimes 75%ish more than 2 always 100%. Gpu acceleration also dependent on source/destination format, but haven't really ever noticed a difference while converting with on or not.

So, probably takes you a bit more time to convert, but unless your editing high bit rate movies like 4k, it's only adding time you must wait, and not ruining the movie.

Just to throw in my 2 cents, go with the UHD. If you really want 4K, save up for a great monitor and go that route.
